Le Pen, Macron face off in final French presidential debate

French presidential candidates Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen face off in a final televised debate on Wednesday which is expected to be bitter, personal and potentially decisive ahead of voting this weekend. The stakes are high ahead of the contest between the pro-European Macron, a 39-year-old former investment banker, and far-right leader Le Pen, the 48-year-old scion of the National Front party. Their starkly different views on Europe, immigration, the economy and French identity will be explored for the first time face-to-face, after a week marked by bruising clashes between them. Polls show Macron holding a hefty but narrowing lead in the polls of 59 percent versus 41 percent, but previous debates during the rollercoaster French campaign have quickly shifted public...

Theresa May eating chips is even more akward than you’d imagine

It was all meant to be so straightforward. Head to Cornwall, lock the media in a large cupboard, walk around a factory, eat some chips, then stand in front of some TV cameras saying the words strong and stable leadership" over and over and over and over again. And it would have been straightforward, but for the minor setback that our Prime Minister cannot eat a chip without displaying utter contempt for everything a chip is and everything a chip stands for. theresa-may-cornwall-2.jpg In Theresa May’s defence, not everyone is so aggressively photographed in the act of chip consumption. It may be that all of us, without even realising, eat our chips while simultaneously staring at them in complete disgust. Perhaps we are all, at the moment of biting into a chip, so taken by ...

Theresa May warns Jean-Claude Juncker she will be a bloody difficult woman in Brexit negotiations

Theresa May has warned Jean-Claude Juncker that she will prove to be a bloody difficult woman during Brexit negotiations after he accused her of being deluded. The Prime Minister said that the process will be tough as she said that voters have to choose whether she or Jeremy Corbyn will be sitting around the negotiating table. She said: Look I think what we've seen recently is that at times these negotiations are going to be tough. Now during the Conservative Party leadership campaign I was described by one of my colleagues as a bloody difficult woman. And I said at the time the next person to find that out will be Jean-Claude Juncker. She made the comments after a German newspaper reported that after a Downing Street dinner on Wednesday Mr Juncker accused Mrs May of being...

This is how Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump could start World War III

With or without Donald Trump’s help, Kim Jong-un could easily plunge the planet into its third world war inside a century. Of course this one would be vastly more destructive than the Great War, where even the use of aircraft was in its infancy though sadly not chemical weapons or World War II, which ended with the first and so far only use of nuclear weapons in war. To date Donald Trump has played a strong hand. He has installed anti-missile defences against the North inside South Korea. He is doing, more or less, what President Kennedy did in the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, and what President Reagan did in the Cold War in the 1980s: practising brinkmanship, demonstrating strength, displaying resolve. The South Koreans are having elections now, and their new government, af...

Donald Trump would be honored to meet NorthKorea’s leader Kim Jong Un

US President Donald Trump said he would be ‘honored’ to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un under the right conditions, dialing back threats of military action against the regime Monday. As Pyongyang threatens to carry out a sixth nuclear test that would further enflame tensions on the Korean peninsula, Trump appeared to offer the prospect of a diplomatic off-ramp. ‘If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him I would, absolutely. I would be honored to do it,’ Trump said in an interview with Bloomberg. ‘If it’s under the, again, under the right circumstances. But I would do that,’ Trump said. In recent weeks Trump has threatened and berated the regime, fearing it may be months away from marrying nuclear and long range missile technology—making a strike against the w...

World’s oldest man who outlived all of his children and four wives dies aged 146

A man who claimed to be the oldest person alive has died aged 146, the family say. Mbah Gotho is understood to have outlived four wives, 10 siblings and all of his children. The Indonesian from Central Java is believed to have checked himself out of hospital six days after being admitted on April 12. The great-great-grandfather then died shortly afterwards after 'refusing' to eat or drink. He died shortly afterwards having "refused" to eat or drink. Mbah hit the headlines last year after presenting documentation showing he was born in December 1870. Remarkably, the "heavy smoker's" papers were recognised by Indonesian officials, who claimed they were valid. If correct, he would have lived significantly longer than the verified oldest person in the world ever - Jeanne Calme...

Britain’s energy supply is in jeopardy after Brexit, warn MPs

British Prime Minister Theresa May addresses supporters at an election campaign rally on May 1, 2017 in Mawdesley Village Hall near Ormskirk, England. After campaigning on the doorsteps of… The future of Britain’s power supply has been jeopardised by Brexit and the government must act urgently to ensure nuclear power stations stay open, MPs have warned. The influential business, energy and industrial strategy committee said that any gap between the UK leaving a European atomic power treaty and entering into secure alternative deals would “severely inhibit nuclear trade and research and threaten power supplies”. The cross-party group of MPs said it shared the nuclear industry’s concern that it would take more than two years to hammer out a new deal for regulating nuclear po...

Things you should never do inside an airport after two men pretended to be suitcases

Airports are funny places where time can stand still, you find it acceptable to drink in the morning and get a bargain on that perfume you've wanted for ages. But there are also strict rules people need to adhere to in airports if they don't want to get, well, arrested or if they don't want to worry other holidaymakers. Security has been made tighter in recent years and sometimes it feels like you can't even look in the direction of guards in case they suspect you of doing something wrong (clearly you're just feeling guilty about the huge bag of sweets you bought for the plane). Staff at Newcastle airport were not impressed this week after two men got on the luggage carousel at check-in and allegedly "pretended to be suitcases" getting as far as the departure lounge. This ...

Japan’s Largest Warship to Guard USA Vessel

Japan’s biggest warship will accompany a U.S. supply vessel in the first such operation since the East Asian country relaxed laws limiting its military activity. Tensions are mounting in the region over North Korea’s missile tests. The U.S. ship has been dispatched to refuel American naval forces in the region, including the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group that North Korea has threatened to sink, the BBC reported. Under conservative Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan has been gradually expanding the role of its heavily-regulated military. The country’s post-World War II constitution means it can only use force in cases of self-defense. A 2015 update expanded this to cover some acts of collective self-defense, such as protecting the equipment of an ally who is defending Ja...

North Korea warns of nuclear test at any time

North Korea warned on Monday that it will carry out a nuclear test at any time and at any location set by its leadership, in the latest rhetoric to fuel jitters in the region. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been running high for weeks, with signs that the North might be preparing a long-range missile launch or a sixth nuclear test and with Washington refusing to rule out a military strike in response. A spokesman for the North’s foreign ministry said Pyongyang was fully ready to respond to any option taken by the US. The regime will continue bolstering its preemptive nuclear attack capabilities unless Washington scrapped its hostile policies, he said in a statement carried by the state-run KCNA news agency. The DPRK’s measures for bolstering the nuclear force to the...
