Macron stretches lead as French presidential campaign enters final day

Centrist French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron extended his lead in the polls over his far-right rival Marine Le Pen on Friday, the final day of a tumultuous election campaign that has turned the country’s politics upside down. The election is seen as the most important in France for decades with two diametrically opposed views of Europe and France’s place in the world at stake. The National Front’s Le Pen would close borders and quit the euro currency, while independent Macron, who has never held elected office, wants closer European cooperation and an open economy. The candidates of France’s two mainstream parties were both eliminated in the first round on April 23. According to an Elabe poll for BFM TV and L’Express, Macron will get 62 percent of the votes in th...

Japan rejects more than 99% of refugee applications

Japan rejects more than 99 per cent of refugees attempting to claim asylum in the country, accepting only 28 people in 2016. That was an increase of one person on 2015’s refugee intake. The country approved a further 97 people for Japanese residence on humanitarian grounds last year. Japan saw its highest ever number of applicants for refugee status in 2016, at 10,901, an increase of 3,315 compared to the previous year. Refugee advocates have argued Japan – which has one of the wealthiest economies in the world - has a humanitarian duty to do more, especially given its shrinking population. Japan is a highly homogenous society and has traditionally been sceptical of immigration. Here they do not pay for your studies, they do not help you to get bank loans, or give you soci...

India’s top court upholds death penalty in Delhi gang rape case

India’s top court on Friday upheld death sentences against four men who fatally gang raped a woman on board a bus in 2012, a crime that sparked widespread protests and drew international attention to violence against women. It’s a barbaric crime and it has shaken the society’s conscience, Justice R. Banumathi told a packed courtroom as the three-judge Supreme Court panel threw out an appeal on behalf of the defendants. The five men and a juvenile lured the 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist and her male friend on to a minibus in New Delhi on Dec. 16, 2012, repeatedly raping the woman and beating both with a metal bar before dumping them on a road. The woman died of grave internal injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital. Applause broke out in court among relatives...

Melania Trump confirms suspicions about her marriage.

Prior to and following the November election, many questions were raised about Melania Trump’s unwillingness to play an active role in her husband’s presidency. In recent months, rumours about the poor state of Donald and Melania Trump’s marriage have plagued the couple, and now it seems the First Lady may have just confirmed them. The slip-up occurred on Tuesday evening when the First Lady liked a tweet written by left-wing blogger Andy Ostroy that showed a GIF of Melania smiling at her husband on election day and grimacing as soon as his back was turned, and referring to Donald Trump’s election promise to build a border wall between the US and Mexico. The tweet read, “Seems the only #Wall @realDonaldTrump‘s built is the one between him and @FLOTUS #Melania #trump.” (Mela...

China calls on citizens to leave North Korea as tensions with US heat up

China has reportedly told its citizens living in North Korea to return home, over fears that tensions between Pyongyang and Washington DC could continue to escalate. The Korea Times reports that the Chinese embassy in North Korea began advising Korean-Chinese residents to return to China last month, over fears the country’s military provocations could lead to retaliation from the US. According to Radio Free Asia, a US-based radio station that broadcasts to Asian countries, the embassy began sending the message to citizens ahead of the 85th anniversary of the Korean People’s Army last month. The radio station quoted a Korean-Chinese man living in Pyongyang who had been contacted by the embassy. Related video: North Korea propaganda video shows missile strike on US Capitol T...

Queen Elizabeth II has a secret Facebook account

The Queen of England, Elizabeth II herself, is on Facebook. Seriously. No, not the official 'The British Monarchy' page which made its debut back in 2010, but a super secret one for Elizabeth herself. According to MailOnline, the Queen has a deeply private personal account, with a secret friend list. Like her mother, Elizabeth II reportedly loves chatting away on the phone. But unlike her mother, our Queen is up to speed with the latest tech, including a lightweight smartphone. She's also been said to be able to text on it. The encrypted mobile is reportedly one of the most sophisticated in the world. It's allegedly impervious to hackers. The two people she reportedly chats to the most are Princess Anne, her daughter, and John Warren, her horse-racing guru and son-in-law o...

France president candidate Le Pen rally T-shirt made in Bangladesh

The souvenir T-shirts sold at France’s presidential candidate Marine Le Pen were made in Bangladesh, despite the far-right candidate consistently championing ‘made in France’ as a key pillar of her economic programme, reports The Independent. The far right presidential candidate repeatedly said she would defend French interests against globalisation and the relocation of factories abroad. But the memorabilia sold in her name does not appear to be an example of the ‘economic patriotism’ she has so vigorously advocated. Labels on most the polo shirts, which were on sale at Ms Le Pen’s meeting in the northern Parisian suburb of Villepinte earlier this week had all been cut out, preventing buyers from finding out where the clothes were made. But reporters from BFM TV found the...

EU says deal with reality after May’s comments

Theresa May makes a statement in Downing Street, London, after visiting Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace to mark the dissolution of Parliament for the General Election. Senior EU figures are expected to react later to Theresa May's combative speech in which she accused some in Brussels of "not wanting Britain to prosper". Launching the Conservative Party's general election campaign after the dissolution of Parliament, she suggested leaks and threats had been "deliberately timed to affect the result of the general election". Two senior sources within the European Council refused to comment directly on the accusations when asked by Sky News, but MEPs gave their reaction on Wednesday evening. Mairead McGuinness, vice president of the European Parliament, warned of the ...

Bangladeshi sex worker tweets Indian PM Modi

A Bangladeshi woman was rescued from the brothel in Budhwarpeth, Pune, in December 2015. After her salvage, she had been lured to India under the false pretext of a job, and was instead sold into commercial sex work, had to first find her way home. But now that clearance from her home country to accept her back has come through, she has tweeted a hand-written letter to the Prime Minister to help her convert the Rs 10,000 she had saved in the old denominations to new ones. In her letter to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and minister of external affairs Sushma Swaraj, the survivor has laid bare her circumstances and how the money she had collected as tips from customers amounting to Rs 10,000 was in the possession of the brothel owners at the time of demonetisation, repor...
