Seoul says North Korea executes 5 senior security officials

North Korea executed five senior security officials with anti-aircraft guns because they made false reports that "enraged" leader Kim Jong Un, South Korea's spy agency said Monday. The comments by the National Intelligence Service in a private briefing to lawmakers come as Malaysia investigates the poisoning death of Kim's estranged elder half brother, Kim Jong Nam. That investigation is still going on, but South Korea says it believes Kim Jong Un ordered the assassination, which took place Feb. 13 at Kuala Lumpur's airport. The spy agency told lawmakers that five North Korean officials in the department of recently purged state security chief Kim Won Hong were executed by anti-aircraft guns because of the false reports to Kim, South Korean lawmaker Lee Cheol Woo said. Photo: Reuters ‘My dear family, please forgive me,’ reads the handwritten letter discarded in the dusty halls of an Islamic State training compound in eastern Mosul. ‘Don’t be sad and don’t wear the black clothes (of mourning). I asked to get married and you did not marry me off. So, by God, I will marry the 72 virgins in paradise.’ They were schoolboy Alaa Abd al-Akeedi’s parting words before he set off from the compound to end his life in a suicide bomb attack against Iraqi security forces last year. Sterling tumbles on renewed reports of a second Scottish independence vote

The pound fell during early Asian trading after reports that Scotland could be about to call a second independence referendum. Concerns around a renewed push for Scottish independence have increased in strength since the EU referendum, however yesterday the Times reported that Theresa May is preparing for another vote. The pound tumbled to $1.2392 against the dollar in the early hours of this morning, and at pixel time was hovering around $1.24. The Scottish concerns are, in fact, nothing new, said LCG Insight's Ipek Ozkardeskaya. The UK’s decision to quit the European Union had immediately triggered questions regarding Scotland’s future in the United Kingdom. However, the eventuality hasn’t been largely factored in the pound’s value so far. If Scotland decides to proceed ...

EU expands North Korea sanctions

The European Union imposed additional sanctions on North Korea on Monday over nuclear and ballistic missile tests carried out in defiance of the UN Security Council. The decision, implementing a November UN resolution, comes with North Korea in the international spotlight after the assassination in Kuala Lumpur airport of Kim Jong-Nam, the estranged half-brother of leader Kim Jong-Un. The European Council, comprising the EU’s 28 member states, said the new measures include restrictions on trade in coal, iron and iron ore, plus a ban on imports of copper, nickel, silver and zinc from North Korea. The sale of new helicopters and vessels to North Korea was banned, while tighter controls were introduced on the transport, finance and property sectors. Member states will also cu...

This Seemingly Harmless Pain Could Be A Sign Of Early Death

As if you needed something else to worry about, a new study now suggests that your seemingly harmless back pain could be a sign of something far worse: early death. According to the study conducted by researchers from the University of Sydney, there is a clear link between back pain and early mortality, although they aren’t yet sure why. According to the study, now published online in European Journal of Pain, individuals who suffer from chronic back pain are 13 percent more likely to die early from any cause. According to the researchers, this finding is significant as many view back pain as harmless and nothing more than a slight inconvenience. These results suggest otherwise. These findings warrant further investigation because while there is a clear link between back pa...

Trump team looks to circumvent WTO dispute system

The Trump administration is exploring alternatives to taking trade disputes to the World Trade Organisation in what would amount to the first step away from a system that Washington helped to establish more than two decades ago. Incoming officials have asked the US Trade Representative’s office to draft a list of the legal mechanisms that Washington could use to level trade sanctions unilaterally against China and other countries. Their goal, people briefed on the request told the Financial Times, is to find ways that the new administration could circumvent the WTO’s dispute system. Since being established in 1995 the WTO has become the pre-eminent venue for resolving trade fights between member countries, which its proponents say has helped prevent destructive trade wars....

Trump denied to attend White House Correspondents Dinner

Donald Trump said on Saturday he will not attend the White House Correspondents Dinner, breaking with an annual tradition in which the US president is the guest of honor at a light-hearted roast held by journalists. I will not be attending the White House Correspondents Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening! Trump tweeted about the event, which is also heavily attended by celebrities. The White House Correspondents Association, which organizes the dinner, insisted the 29 April event would still go on as planned as a celebration of the First Amendment and the important role played by an independent news media in a healthy republic. We look forward to shining a spotlight at the dinner on some of the best political journalism of the ...

Tower Hamlets joins fight to halt government business rate hikes

The Mayor of Tower Hamlets has urged local residents and businesses to add their voice to a joint Tower Hamlets Council, East End Trades Guild and Hackney Council petition urging a rethink on the government's planned hike in business rates. Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs said: "Many small and medium sized businesses have expressed co...
