Blast of icy winds to bring flurry of snow across UK this February

Freezing winds are set to bring snow to the east coast of the UK this week. Plummeting temperatures will hit the coast from Wednesday accompanied by the chance of wintry showers. The Met Office has issued warnings about high winds in Northern Ireland and parts of western Scotland as the working week begins with a belt of rain crossing the UK. Emma Sharples, from the Met Office, said temperatures are likely to dip by at least two or three degrees by Thursday for much of England with day time maximums unlikely to rise higher than around 5C. Ms Sharples said: We'll definitely be seeing low single figures by the end of the week. And, of course, overnight, where skies remain clear and away from coastal areas, we'll see temperatures dipping down to negative figures The wind will...

Meghan Markle Sports H Ring in Subtle Nod to Boyfriend Prince Harry

We can't blame Meghan Markle for wanting to keep boyfriend Prince Harry on her mind at all times. On Sunday, the 35-year-old actress was snapped carrying flowers from shops near Kensington Palace, but it was her jewelry that had people buzzing. Meghan wore a gold ring with the letter H on it on her right hand, presumably alluding to her relationship with Harry. The glamorous Suits star was dressed casually for her outing, rocking a blue beanie, a parka and rain boots. This isn't the first time Meghan has worn jewelry reinforcing her highly publicized relationship with 32-year-old Harry. In December, she stepped out in Toronto, Canada -- again, buying flowers wearing a gold necklace with a tiny H and tiny M on it. Meghan and Harry's relationship is definitely showing no sig...

Trump speech magisterial and using Jerusalem as background music

The BBC has raised eyebrows for its lack of impartiality in describing John Bercow's bid to stop Donald Trump speaking in Parliament as magisterial. Current affairs programme Newsnight also set the Speaker of the Commons comments, in which he accused the US president of racisim and sexism, to the soundtrack of the patriotic hymn Jerusalem. Ending Monday evening's show with a clip of Mr Bercow's speech, presenter Naga Munchetty said: He was asked about the prospect of Donald Trump addressing Parliament during his upcoming state visit. The Speaker's response was typically magisterial. Impartiality is supposed to be the cornerstone of the BBC's news coverage, but viewers took to social media after the programme to describe the segment as bare faced bias. However another viewe...

Theresa May forced to apologise for breaking Parliament rules to mock Labour MP

Theresa May was forced to apologise after she broke House of Commons rules by mocking one of Labour's top MPs. The Prime Minister called Emily Thornberry Lady Nugee during heated exchanges in the House of Commons. The Shadow Foreign Secretary does not use her official title, which comes from her marriage to the High Court Judge Sir Christopher Nugee. Critics have used it in the past to point out her lofty family link. But for Theresa May to use it in the Commons chamber broke the rule by which MPs only address each other by their job titles or constituencies. Ms Thornberry raised the issue with the Commons Speaker, saying: For the record, I have never been a Lady. And it will take a great deal more than me being married to a Knight of the Realm in order to make me one! Mrs...

GB through after umpire hit

Great Britain are through to the Davis Cup quarter-finals after Denis Shapovalov of Canada was defaulted in the deciding rubber on Sunday. In a very bizarre end to an exciting tie in Ottawa, the 17-year-old Shapovalov accidentally hit umpire Arnaud Gabas with the ball, meaning he had to be defaulted by tie referee Brian Earley. Already two sets up, Kyle Edmund broke for 2-1 in set three when Shapovalov hit the ball out, and the youngster smashed the ball in anger towards the stands, only for it to fly straight into the face of Gabas. Shapovalov, who won Junior Wimbledon last year, was distraught after the incident, while Gabas was given ice and TV pictures showed his left eye badly swollen. Great Britain therefore triumphed 3-2, Canada's Vasek Pospisil having earlier produ...

Death toll from Afghan avalanches tops 100

More than a 100 people have been killed in a series of avalanches triggered by days of heavy snowfall around Afghanistan, including 50 in one village, officials said Sunday, warning the death toll could rise still further. The avalanches struck after three days of heavy snow, which has destroyed scores of homes and blocked roads mainly in central and northeastern provinces, making it difficult for rescue workers to reach the stricken villages. The bulk of the deaths however occurred in remote Nuristan province, where at least 50 people were killed in a single village, Mohammad Omar Mohammadi a spokesman for the ministry of natural disaster told AFP. Avalanches have buried two entire villages in Bargmatal district, 50 bodies were recovered from one village while rescuers ar...

If trade stops, war starts Alibaba founder who visited Donald Trump warns

Jack Ma, who met US President Donald Trump last month and announced his company Alibaba would help create one million jobs in the United States, added: The world needs globalisation, it needs trade. Speaking in Melbourne at the launch of Alibaba's Australia and New Zealand headquarters, he said: Everybody is concerned about trade wars. If trade stops, war starts. But worry doesn't solve the problem, he added, Business Insider Australia reports. The only thing you can do is get involved and actively prove that trade helps people to communicate. We should have fair, transparent and inclusive trade. Speaking a month after meeting Mr Trump, he said the world was in an interesting period requiring new leadership. Mr Trump's first executive order withdrew the US from the Trans-P...

Corbyn braced for fresh Brexit rebellion

Jeremy Corbyn is braced for a fresh rebellion this week over the party’s stance on invoking Article 50 as the historic Article 50 bill reaches its final stages in the Commons. On a day in which one of his key allies, Diane Abbott, came under mounting pressure to quit after she abstained on the first vote last week due to a migraine, the Labour leader also refused to be drawn on whether he would discipline those who voted against triggering the mechanism for exiting the EU. The Independent understands Mr Corbyn is not likely to replace those who resigned from the shadow Cabinet after the leadership imposed a three-line whip until after the final reading and vote on Wednesday evening. It is expected that more MPs could join those who rebelled last week, if the party fails to...

Trump under fire for saying he respects killer Putin

President Donald Trump drew fire from Republicans and Democrats alike Sunday, after he defended a softer stance on Russia, playing down political assassinations and Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Trump now two weeks into his four-year term showed no signs of yielding to demands from within his own Republican Party to distance himself from President Vladimir Putin, plunging himself into a fresh political firestorm. President Donald Trump speaks with reporters on board Air Force One before departing from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, on February 3, 2017 I do respect him. Well, I respect a lot of people, but that doesn't mean I'll get along with them, Trump said in an excerpt of a Super Bowl interview with Fox News's Bill O'Reilly that will air in full on Sunday. When pr...

Iran vows roaring missiles if threatened, defies new sanctions

A Revolutionary Guards commander said Iran would use its missiles if its security is under threat, as the elite force defied new U.S. sanctions on its missile programme by holding a military exercise on Saturday. Tensions between Tehran and Washington have risen since a recent Iranian ballistic missile test which prompted U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to impose sanctions on individuals and entities linked to the Revolutionary Guards. Trump's national security adviser Michael Flynn said the Washington was putting Iran on notice over its destabilising activity, and Trump tweeted Tehran was "playing with fire". We are working day and night to protect Iran’s security, head of Revolutionary Guards' aerospace unit, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh was quoted a...
