Judges reject President Trump’s travel ban appeal

Judges have rejected Donald Trump's appeal to have his travel ban immediately reinstated. Federal Judge James Robart halted the ban on Friday after questioning the constitutionality of the President's controversial executive order, which blocks citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US and all refugees. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Sunday denied a formal request by the US Department of Justice to lift the ruling. Instead, it gave the Trump administration until Monday afternoon to file more arguments - and challengers of the ban to respond to the emergency appeal. Acting solicitor general Noel Francisco had argued on Saturday night that the President's authority is "largely immune from judicial control" when it comes to deci...

Vladimir Putin prepares for Suvorov Attack, warns the West

Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares his military forces, gigantic infantry and tank exercises, serving as a warning shot at the West. The show of military force is part of the army’s efforts to nail the Suvorov Attack army competition, the Russian Pacific Fleet’s naval infantry unit exercises. The competition will be joined by five countries: Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela and Kazakhstan. It is scheduled to take place in the middle of the year. The Russian naval infantry's show of fighting prowess may serve as a warning to Britain as tensions are on the rise from both sides. During the drills, troops fired AK47s and launch rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). Soldiers endured the cold as they dash it with heavy-duty ammunition. In December last year, the US and the UK h...

Donald Trump has lowest approval ratings of any President in US history

Donald Trump He has only been in office for two weeks, but with each controversial policy announcement coming hard upon the heels of another, Donald Trump has the lowest approval rating of any new President, according to the latest poll. Over half of US respondents at 53 per cent disapprove of the way their new President is handling the job, according to the CNN/ORC International poll released on Friday. Just 44 per cent of respondents gave Mr Trump their approval, making him the only President since polls began to hold a negative approval rating at such an early stage in his White House tenure. However, there is little surprise expressed among Americans to the way in which Mr Trump has begun his presidency, with 78 per cent saying he is handling things exactly as they wou...

EU leaders round on Trump and reject May’s bridge building efforts

European leaders launched a series of attacks on Donald Trump over his anti-EU rhetoric on Friday, accusing him of a lack of respect, as Theresa May’s attempts to position herself as a bridge with the new US president were roundly rejected at a summit in Malta. Trump’s conduct was scorned by prime ministers and presidents, with the French leader, François Hollande, warning there would be no future for Europe’s relations with the US if this future isn’t defined in common. At a working lunch at the talks in the Maltese capital, Valletta, the British prime minister appealed to other leaders to work “constructively and patiently” with the American president. Addressing reporters, however, Hollande said: “Of course it is not about asking one particular country, be it the UK or ...

Assailant shot in Louvre attack thought to be Egyptian

The man who attacked soldiers in front of the Louvre Museum in Paris is believed to be an Egyptian, French authorities have said. The 29-year-old, who was living in the United Arab Emirates, is in a life-threatening condition in hospital after being shot, prosecutor Francois Molins said. He said the man’s identity has not been formally confirmed but the French soldiers’ quick reactions put an end to a terror attack at one of Paris’ most iconic tourist attractions. He said everything shows that the assailant was very determined. French president Francois Hollande told reporters at an EU summit in Malta that there was “no doubt” the attack was of a terrorist nature. He said the situation around the landmark museum is “totally under control but the overall threat to France re...

Man shocked to find his new passport has someone else’s photo

A man who renewed his passport was horrified to get it back featuring another bloke's photo instead of his own. Ben Spence paid £82 to update the document ahead of a weekend birthday trip to Amsterdam with pals at the end of this month. It came back with all his correct information - but had a picture of a total stranger. Ben, 28, said: They put a completely different person's picture in my passport. I couldn't believe it. Ben, from Blackheath, SE London, collected his new passport from his local post office last Wednesday. He said: I flicked through it, and it seemed all fine. But my friend who was with me looked over my shoulder said 'wait that's not you! We had a bit of a laugh about it but then realised the security issue involved. I'd also waited four weeks for it and...

Federal judge temporarily blocks Trump’s entry order nationwide

A federal judge in Washington state on Friday temporarily blocked enforcement of President Trump’s controversial ban on entry to the United States, and airlines planned to begin allowing passengers from banned countries to board, according to a person familiar with the matter. Following the ruling, government authorities immediately began communicating with airlines and taking steps that would allow travel by those previously barred from doing so, according to a U.S. official. At the same time, though, the White House said in a statement that the Justice Department would at the earliest possible time file for an emergency stay of the outrageous” ruling from the judge. Minutes later, it issued a similar statement omitting the word outrageous. The president’s order is intend...

Fresh Brexit legal challenge blocked by high court

Two senior judges have blocked a legal challenge to the government’s strategy for leaving the single market and the European Economic Area. In a hearing at the high court that lasted less than an hour, Lord Justice Lloyd Jones and Mr Justice Lewis dismissed an application for a fresh judicial review of the Brexit process brought by two sets of claimants. The judges were due to give their reasons for their decision on Friday afternoon. Parliament has already given the government its approval to trigger Brexit under article 50 of the Lisbon treaty following a historic legal action in the supreme court over parliamentary sovereignty. James Eadie QC, for the government, told the hearing that since ministers had not yet decided which legal route would be taken to leave the EEA,...
