Rail road chaos: Southern Rail train causes delays after lorry carrying it gets stuck

A Southern Rail train being transported on a lorry caused delays for motorists when it became stuck at a crossroads in south east London. The carriage became wedged as it tried to navigate a tight corner in Crystal Palace on Wednesday night and held up traffic for half an hour, eyewitness Luke Alexander said. The incident happened on the junction between Gipsy Hill, Westow Hill, Westow Street and Central Hill at around 8.20pm. Mr Alexander, who works at a bar opposite the junction, said he had gone outside after hearing a commotion. I think the truck taking it had taken the wrong route and it had completely jammed itself on top of the crossroads, he said. Everyone was finding it the most hilarious thing including the truck drivers themselves who were trying to negotiate it...

Donald Trump appoints China critic Peter Navarro to key global trade role

Donald Trump's pick to lead his new National Trade Council is an economist who supports closer ties with Taiwan and has authored a book called Death by China: How America Lost its Manufacturing Base. The President-elect named Peter Navarro to head the White House group and praised him as a visionary who would develop trade policies that shrink our trade deficit, expand our growth, and help stop the exodus of jobs from our shores. Mr Navarro is an academic and one-time investment adviser who has authored a number of popular books and made a film describing China's threat to the US economy as well as Beijing's desire to become the dominant economic and military power in Asia. Mr Trump made trade a centrepiece of his presidential campaign and railed against what he said were ...

Concerns for Queen’s health after she delays annual break at Sandringham

Buckingham Palace said both she and the Duke of Edinburgh have heavy colds and decided it would be best to postpone their trip. Her Majesty, who is 90, had been due to catch the 10.44 from London King's Cross to King's Lynn to begin her annual Christmas break at her Norfolk home, but failed to turn up, leaving station staff in the dark. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have heavy colds, and so have decided not to travel to Sandringham today. Her Majesty had hosted the annual Christmas lunch at the Palace on Tuesday, when the extended Royal family joined her for the traditional get-together before her winter break in Norfolk. In 2011 the Duke of Edinburgh, 95, spent Christmas in hospital after he needed heart surgery for a blocked arte...

Berlin attack: Four arrested after Christmas market killings

Four people have reportedly been arrested in Germany as a Europe-wide search continues for the suspected Berlin attacker. Armed police stormed a house in Dortmund early on Thursday morning, detaining four people inside, Bild reported. The newspaper published photos of officers at the scene and taking a suspect covered in a towel into custody. They were believed to have links to Anis Amri, a 24-year-old Tunisian man being hunted across Europe following the massacre at a Christmas market in Berlin.  A spokesperson for Germany's Federal Public Prosecutor, which is leading the terror investigation, said the report was totally false. But officials at North Rhine-Westphalia police did not deny the operation took place and The Independent understands more details may be released ...

Britain braces for Storm Barbara as fog disrupts Christmas getaway flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports

Festive travel plans faced being thrown into chaos after Heathrow, Gatwick and London City Airport all experienced a raft of hold-ups due to the weather. A spokesman for Heathrow said some early-morning flights had been been pushed back and knock-on delays could take place throughout the day, adding that there have yet to be any cancellations. British Airways said on its official Twitter feed that it was aware of fog affecting flights at all three London airports and advised passengers to check their flight status online. A statement on its website added: Fog across parts of southern England is affecting some flights to and from London's airports today. For safety reasons, Air Traffic Control has to allow greater space between landing aircraft in fog or during periods of l...

Trump on tape saying every racist thing ever claims actor Tom Arnold

The actor Tom Arnold has claimed to have video of Donald Trump using racist language, obscenities and denigrating his own son in outtakes of The Apprentice. I have the outtakes to The Apprentice where he says every bad thing ever, every offensive, racist thing ever. It was him sitting in that chair saying the N-word, saying the C-word, calling his son a retard, just being so mean to his own children, Arnold told Seattle-based radio station KIRO. The actor and comedian said a contact from the reality TV show passed him the material before last month’s election, but he did not release it because of a confidentiality clause and the expectation that Trump would lose. the people sent it to me, it was funny. Hundreds of people have seen these. It was sort of a Christmas video th...

Brexit memo leak firm Deloitte withdraws from Government contracts worth millions after Theresa May row

The large consultancy firm which fell out with Downing Street after a leaked memo it wrote suggested Theresa May has no Brexit plan, will now forgo what could be millions of pounds worth of Government contracts. The firm will now undergo a six month moratorium on pitching for lucrative government work, A spokesman said: Deloitte regrets the publication of the two-page note, and has apologised for the unintended disruption it caused government. Barack Obama permanently bans offshore drilling in Atlantic and Arctic before Donald Trump takes office

With only a month left in his presidency, Barack Obama announced an indefinite ban on offshore oil and gas drilling in the Arctic and on the Atlantic Seaboard adding a difficult barrier for the incoming Trump administration should they decide to undo Mr Obama’s environmental legacy.  Mr Obama invoked a provision of the obscure 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, a law passed in protection of coral reefs and life in marine sanctuaries.  The action comes as Donald Trump finalises his Cabinet before taking office in January. Mr Trump has vowed to roll back many of Mr Obama’s major environmental policies, and withdraw the US from the Paris global climate change agreement in which nations vowed to lower their emissions significantly.  The President-elect has only reaffirmed...

FBI search warrant into Hillary Clinton emails unsealed

The FBI had no probable cause to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails just under two weeks before Election Day, according to a federal judge who ordered the unsealing of the search warrant documents. FBI investigators seized a laptop belonging to the husband of longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin’s husband, Anthony Weiner in a sexting scandal investigation. Agents found thousands of emails sent by Ms Abedin on the laptop, and petitioned a judge to reissue a warrant to search the emails. The agents believed the emails likely contained classified information sent from Ms Clinton’s private server while she was Secretary of State. Democrats, including Ms Clinton herself, attributed Donald Trump’s unexpected victory to a congressional letter from FBI dir...

Drone safety crackdown on reckless users could see mandatory registration introduced

Proposal part of Department for Transport consultation on improving drone safety over concerns about dangerous flying and use of the technology to deliver drugs and weapons into prisons Mandatory registration for new drones could be introduced in a bid to crack down on reckless users. The proposal is part of a Department for Transport (DfT) consultation on improving drone safety. It is hoped the scheme could help authorities identify the owners of drones that are flown illegally. The consultation will also consider whether there is a need for a new criminal offence for misuse of drones. Professional services firm PwC published a report in May that estimated that the global market for drone use will be worth $127 billion (£103 billion) in the coming years. Aviation minister...
