Losing single market could devastate Scotland’s prosperity, says Nicola Sturgeon

Losing Scotland's place in the single market would be "potentially devastating" to the country's long-term prosperity, the First Minister has said. Nicola Sturgeon said that being part of the European Single Market is "vital for Scotland's future economic wellbeing" and warned against a hard Brexit. She was speaking ahead of the publication of the Scottish Government's paper, "Scotland's Place in Europe" in Edinburgh on Tuesday. The paper will propose that Britain should remain in the free trade bloc even though the UK has voted for Brexit. The document will also set out how Scotland could remain in the single market without the rest of the UK and propose a ''substantial transfer of new powers to Holyrood'' after the country leaves the European Union (EU). Ms Sturgeon said...

Several injured in shooting at mosque in central Zurich

A man stormed into a Zurich mosque on Monday evening and opened fire on people praying, injuring three, Swiss police said. They said they had collected evidence inside the building and would make more details available on Tuesday. They declined to comment on the potential motive. Two of the three men -- aged 30, 35 and 56 -- were seriously injured in the attack shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time (1630 GMT) near the main train station in Switzerland's financial capital, Zurich police said. A third sustained less severe injuries. All three were brought to hospital. The unidentified suspect, a man around 30 years old who according to witnesses was wearing dark clothing and a dark wool cap, fled the mosque, police said. Police said a body was found nearby but would not comment...

Pakistani refugee blamed for Berlin Christmas market terror attack

A Pakistani refugee named only as Naved B. has been named as the prime suspect in the Berlin Christmas market tragedy by German media. The 23-year-old arrived in Germany a year ago, Bild reported citing security sources. Police have said at least 12 people died when the huge vehicle smashed into booths outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the centre of the city. The truck is believed to have Polish numberplates. The suspect had been living in Flughfen Tempelhof – an old airport converted into a refugee centre. He was reportedly known as a petty criminal but authorities had not considered him to be a terror suspect. Four young men were also questioned after police stormed the Tempelhof hangar and it is thought that one was arrested. German officials are interrogati...

Democrats turn faithless electors in U.S. Electoral College surprise

At least five Democrats who had been committed to back Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Electoral College cast ballots for other people on Monday, the largest number of faithless electors seen in well over a century. The 538 electors were voting across the country to confirm Republican Donald Trump as the next president. The event is normally a formality but took on extra prominence this year after some Democrats urged electors to revolt and switch to Clinton, who won the national popular vote on Nov. 8. In the end, it was not Republicans breaking ranks. The Democratic dissidents - four from Washington state and one from Maine - underscored deep divisions within their party and effectively dashed long-shot hopes by some activists that Republicans pledged to Trump might back Cli...

Vladimir Putin says killing of Russian ambassador designed to spoil Russian

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the killing of the Russian ambassador to Ankara is designed to spoil Russian Turkish ties. Mr Putin said the killing of Andrey Karlov in the Turkish capital was also intended to derail Moscow's attempts to find, with Iran and Turkey, a solution for the Syria crisis. He said Russian investigators have opened a criminal case into the killing. In televised comments, Mr Putin, speaking at a special meeting in the Kremlin, ordered security at Russian embassies around the world to be stepped up and said he wanted to know who had directed the gunman's hand. He heaped praise on the murdered Russian ambassador, Mr Karlov, who was shot in the back and killed as he gave a speech at an Ankara art gallery, and made clear that Moscow's response ...

Brexit: UK can’t deport millions of EU nationals, report warns

Mass deportations of the estimated 2.9 million EU nationals living in the UK would be impractical and they should not be used as a bargaining chip in Brexit negotiations, the government is being warned. In a strongly-worded report published on Monday, parliament’s influential joint committee on human rights (JCHR) highlights the political uncertainty over the residential status of both EU citizens in the UK and the 1.2 million Britons believed to be living elsewhere within the European Union. The government must not use human rights as a bargaining chip, Harriet Harman MP, the former deputy Labour leader and chair of JCHR, said: The UK government could not deport the large numbers of EU nationals currently in the UK. In the unlikely and unwelcome event that the government ...

In last-shot bid, thousands urge electoral college to block Trump at Monday vote

Carole Joyce of Arizona expected her role as a GOP elector to be pretty simple: She would meet the others in Phoenix and carry out a vote for Trump, who won the most votes in her state and whom she personally supported. But then came the mail and the emails and the phone calls first hundreds, then thousands of voters worrying that Trump’s impulsive nature would lead the country into another war. Honestly, it had an impact, said Joyce, a 72-year-old Republican state committee member. I’ve seen enough funerals. I’m tired of hearing bagpipes. But I signed a loyalty pledge. And that matters. Such is the life these days for many of the 538 men and women who are scheduled to meet Monday across the country to carry out what has traditionally been a perfunctory vote after most eve...

Christmas strike chaos: Pressure grows on Theresa May as 1,000 Royal Mail workers threaten wildcat action as Post Office workers walk out

Strikes that spell misery for hundreds of thousands of people this week are set to worsen as Royal Mail staff threaten new wildcat stoppages which could delay millions of Christmas cards and presents. A further 1,000 Royal Mail delivery staff could take unofficial industrial action as a separate five-day strike by 3,000 Crown post office workers starts on Monday, The Telegraph can reveal, at a time when the service is creaking under the weight of festive demand. It comes at the start of a week of strike chaos with conductors on rail network Southern set to stop trains south of London on Monday and Tuesday, and more stoppages by British Airways baggage handlers and cabin crew over the weekend frustrating many attempting to get home for Christmas. Pressure is growing on Ther...

Cambridge spy seminars hit by whispers of Russian links as three intelligence experts resign

It has been more than seventy years since a ring of Cambridge spies infiltrated British intelligence so they could pass on crucial information to the Soviets. But it seems academics at the university are once again involved in whispers of espionage and double bluffs. This time, it is not a spy ring at the centre of intrigue but rather suggestions that Kremlin operatives may be targeting a seminar programme. The concerns emerged after a number of experts unexpectedly resigned from their positions at the Cambridge Intelligence Seminar (CIS), an academic forum on the Western spy world. The men, which include former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove, are said to have left amid concerns that the Kremlin is behind a newly-established intelligence journal, which provides funding to ...

Anjem Choudary’s bodyguard could be in horrific Islamic State beheading video

Counter terror officials are investigating whether a former bodyguard to the jailed hate preacher Anjem Choudary has appeared in a horrific Islamic State propaganda video, beheading a prisoner. Mohammed Reza Haque appears in the newly released video dressed in black and using a hunting knife to cut the head off a bound and kneeling captive, the Mail on Sunday reported. Haque was a close associate of Choudary, Britain’s most notorious hate preacher, who was jailed in September for five years and six months for drumming up support for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil). Haque, from Bethnal Green, East London, was photographed and filmed in countless UK demonstrations with Choudary and acted as his bodyguard. The latest Isil video shows the execution of five men accu...
