World’s longest reigning monarch Thailand’s King Bhumibol dies at 88

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died peacefully on Thursday, was the world's longest-reigning monarch, credited with restoring the influence of Thailand's royalty during 70 years on the throne and earning the devotion of many of his subjects. For the majority of the country's 68 million people, the king was a pillar of stability in rapidly changing times - Thailand embraced industrialisation during his reign but also saw its parliamentary democracy punctuated by 10 military coups, the most recent in May 2014. King Bhumibol, who ascended the throne on June 9, 1946, was seen as a force for unity, and there have long been concerns that the political tensions that have riven Thailand over the past decade could worsen after his death. That may be less likely under the regime of th...

The second independence referendum bill for Scotland reveals Nicola Sturgeon

A Bill for a second independence referendum will be published by the Scottish Government within days, Nicola Sturgeon has announced. The First Minister said the move is necessary so Scots can reconsider the issue in light of the vote for Brexit and "to do so before the UK leaves the EU". She told delegates at the SNP conference in Glasgow that an Independence Referendum Bill is to be published for consultation by her Government next week. She also used her opening speech to send a firm message to UK Prime Minister Theresa May, telling her: "If you think for one single second that I'm not serious about doing what it takes to protect Scotland's interests, then think again. "If you can't - or won't - allow us to protect our interests within the UK, then Scotland will have the...

It has around 2,500 customer accounts in Britain and offices in London, Birmingham and Bradford. The FCA said Sonali failed to have proper anti-money laundering systems in place for nearly four years from August 2010 to July 2014, despite having been warned about weaknesses in its controls. It said: "The FCA found serious and ...

The pound is finally rising

The pound has made back some ground against both the dollar and euro in volatile trading following its latest slide, on Tuesday, attributed to Brexit concerns. Sterling was trading just below $1.23 and €1.11 as investors reacted to the Government indicating it was prepared to offer MPs greater scrutiny of the process for leaving the European Union. Fears of a 'hard' Brexit have dominated the assault on the pound's value, which has tumbled 6% since Theresa May signalled the UK would be leaving the single market to allow full control over immigration. Sterling's rise of almost 2% on Wednesday followed a sag to $1.20 the previous day. In that session, the assault on the pound pushed money towards UK stocks instead, with the FTSE 100 reaching a record intraday high. Analysts h...

PM May makes eleventh hour concession over Brexit scrutiny

Conservative party conference Theresa May has made "one hell of a climbdown" in a bid to prevent a Tory rebellion over her Brexit strategy. The Prime Minister accepted a call to ensure Parliament can properly scrutinise the plan for leaving the EU before Article 50 is invoked, which is likely to take place before March 2017. Labour will make the call for scrutiny during an Opposition Day motion in the House of Commons on Wednesday (12 October). But May has tabled an amendment accepting closer inspection, as long as it does not undermine the negotiating position of the government as negotiations are entered into. The prime minister's move comes amid increasing cross-party pressure for lawmakers to be given a vote on the Brexit strategy before Article 50 is triggered, settin...

The household traditions of Muharram

Muharram has significance for all Muslims, irrespective of the sectarian divisions that are said to be a major issue in the Islamic belief. However, the expression and the intensity of observance of Ashura, or the tenth day of the month of Muharram, varies within the Islamic world. During the time of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) Muslims used to fast for two days to commemorate Musa (AS) and his people's deliverance from the clutches of the Pharaoh. The battle of Karbala added a new dimension to this observance. For the Shiʿite community in different regions of the world, many cultural aspects of mourning have been integrated into the customs of the day of Ashura. As the family of Hussain (R) is mourned as one's own, men and women follow the outwardly expressions of grief as wel...

Special Correspondent: The British-based niece of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is standing as an MP in Britain’s General Election in May. Tulip 33, is standing as a candidate for the main opposition Labour Party in a seat in the capital London called Hampstead and Kilburn. Tulip is likely to win the seat as Labour appears to be ahead in the polls in the constituency. However, questions are already being raised about Tulip family background, and her apparent attempt to hide her links to her aunt, Sheik Hasina. A British national newspaper has reported that in 2012, Tulip was photograph with President Putin at the Kre...
