Brussels slams the door on UK companies

EU shuts the door on UK companies Britain’s biggest companies are being frozen out of crucial discussions in Brussels, sparking fears their international operations could face swift “policy punishment” over the decision by voters to leave the EU. Senior executives across the spectrum of industry sectors have told the Sunday Telegraph that they are now struggling to speak to EU officials, despite having operations and partnerships worth billions of euros on the continent. It came as the urgent need for more trade and diplomacy expertise in London is sparking broader fears about the clout British companies are able to draw on further afield. The Brussels representatives of some of the largest FTSE 100 companies are finding that calls go unreturned, discussion papers are not ...

Married woman at centre of Donald Trump’s p***y grab sex boast comments revealed

The identity of the married woman at the centre of Donald Trump's 'p***y grab' sex boast comments has been revealed as former Access Hollywood co-host Nancy O'Dell. Donald Trump has already made two apologies after a tape emerged of him making lewd remarks and boasting about groping women. In a statement released tonight he admitted his words were "foolish" and that "Anyone who knows me, knows these words don't reflect who I am." “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologise,” Trump added. The Republican presidential candidate went on "I never said I was perfect", before going on to say campaigning around the country in recent months has "changed" him. However, he went on to describe the tape as "nothing more than a distraction" from the "real world" problems facing America. In...

Is love worth $100? Brooklyn Bridge padlocks lead to fines

If you're thinking of attaching a "love lock" on the Brooklyn Bridge be warned: There'll be a price to pay. New York City officials on Friday announced a $100 fine for proclaiming your undying love with a padlock on the famous span. Officials removed hundreds of locks and placed signs on the bridge's pedestrian walk warning violators of the fine. But the signs aren't without humor. One says "No lock, yes lox" with a picture of a crossed out padlock and a bagel and lox. Last year, 11,000 locks were removed to a tune of $116,000. The locks are a trend seen around the world. They can pose safety and structural hazards, as happened in Paris in 2014 when a section of bridge fencing collapsed under the weight of the locks.

I was wrong: I apologise

Donald Trump, facing the deepest crisis of his presidential campaign, apologised early yesterday for crude and aggressively sexual remarks about women that he made in 2005, as criticism swelled from within his Republican Party. The Republican nominee, in a shocking video released by The Washington Post Friday, was caught using vulgar language about groping and kissing women with impunity. "I've said and done things I regret," he said in a televised apology, believed to be the first of his 16-month White House campaign. "Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize." Trump was facing savage criticism after release of the video, which landed like a bombshell and gave his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton fresh ammunitio...

Scale of sexual abuse in UK universities likened to Savile and Catholic scandals

The scale of sexual harassment and gender violence by UK university staff has been likened to the scandals involving the Catholic church and Jimmy Savile in accounts shared by more than 100 women with the Guardian. Their stories – including those of verbal bullying, serial harassment, assault, sexual assault and rape – expose an alarming pattern of abuse and harassment in British universities which remains largely hidden. A number of contributors drew parallels with the abuse scandals affecting the Catholic church and Savile, the disgraced late TV star. Many women said they had not pursued complaints for fear of jeopardising their academic careers. Those who did complain said they felt isolated and unprotected, while the more powerful men they accused appeared to be untou...

The real reason the little royal Prince George only wears shorts

We've seen Prince George on a number of occasions now – at public engagements, in official photographs, and most recently during last week's tour of Canada – and there's one thing that royal watchers have noticed about the little royal: he only ever wears shorts. According to an etiquette expert there is a very good reason for this - and it's nothing to do with fashion, but rather royal and aristocratic tradition. It's a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts," William Hanson told Harper's Bazaar UK. "Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England. Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban. And no self-re...

Government approves the process of injecting liquid Cuadrilla plans

The process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rock. Fracking under homes in Lancashire by energy firm Cuadrilla has been approved by the Government, overruling the decision of local councillors. Sajid Javid, the Communities Secretary, decided the shale gas explorer should get planning consent to drill and frack horizontal wells at its site at Preston New Road. A final decision on a second site, Roseacre Wood, has been delayed to allow Cuadrilla to give more evidence about the traffic impact. However, if the company can address concerns raised by the planning inspector, Mr Javid has said he is also minded to approve the plans. The four wells Cuadrilla plans to drill at Preston New Road would be the first horizontal shale wells to be fracked in the UK, m...
