Munich shooting: police say lone attacker is among the dead

The lone gunman who killed nine people and wounded a further 21 at a shopping center in Munich before shooting himself was an 18-year-old German of Iranian descent, police have said. Munich police had declared a cautious “all-clear” Friday night following a mass shooting in the shopping centre. The attack sparked a manhunt that shut down the entire city, as security forces hunted for a number of suspected attackers. However, police confirmed in a press conference that the shooter had acted alone, and was dead. A 15-year-old girl was among the dead, and several injured youngsters have been admitted to children’s hospitals in Munich, local media reported. Police stopped trains, buses and trams, closed highways to private cars and ordered citizens to stay in their homes as th...

Meet Graham: The Superhuman Evolved To Survive Car Accidents

We humans are always pushing limits ― skydiving, downhill skiing, car racing. The stark reality, however, is that our bodies are not built to survive accidents involving many of the technologies we’ve come to love and rely on, namely automobiles. Then there’s Graham ― a bulging, unsightly and very crash-proof specimen. Developed as part of a new road safety campaign in Australia, the lifelike sculpture highlights our own vulnerabilities, designed with bodily features that might be present in humans if they had evolved to withstand the forces involved in [car] crashes, according to the Transport Accident Commission in the state of Victoria. Graham was produced by Melbourne-based artist Patricia Piccinini, with help from road safety engineer Dr. David Logan and trauma surgeo...

UK Business Sees Downturn After Brexit Vote

The UK is heading for a 0.4% contraction in the third quarter according to the first post-Brexit snapshot of business activity. A flash estimate from the closely-watched Markit purchasing managers' index (PMI) for July pointed to the worst performance for more than seven years - when the economy was in the depth of recession. The pound, already trading at 31-year lows against the US dollar, fell by a cent on the figures. The figures will add to pressure on the Bank of England to cut interest rates next month to cushion the economy from the Brexit blow. Markit chief economist Chris Williamson said: "July saw a dramatic deterioration in the economy, with business activity slumping at the fastest rate since the height of the global financial crisis in early 2009." He said the...

It is time to accept the fact that Brexit may never actually happen

The more time goes by, the more plausible it becomes that the UK may never actually leave the European Union. Leaving the EU is so difficult, and the consequences are so economically damaging, that it may be easier for prime minister Theresa May's government to endlessly delay the process rather than to actually leave. Morgan Stanley economists Jacob Nell and Melanie Baker published a fascinating note to investors this morning in which they attempt to figure out how the UK will actually leave the EU, and what the UK's post-Brexit relationship with Europe will look like. Nell and Baker do not make any specific predictions about how the UK will leave the EU, but they do point out two key facts: • The EU will not give the UK a deal in which Britain gets access to the single m...

IAF aircraft with 29 on board goes missing over Bay of Bengal

An Indian Air Force plane with 29 people on board today went missing in the Bay of Bengal while flying from southern city of Chennai to Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Antonov AN 32, a twin-engined turboprop military transport aircraft, took off from Tambaram airbase near Chennai for Port Blair shortly after 8:00am when it lost contact with the radar, reports The Times of India. The IAF, Navy and Coast Guard have launched a joint search and rescue operation. Meanwhile, officials at the Ministry of Defence and Navy are closely monitoring the case. All the coastal security establishments in Andaman and Nicobar have been put on high alert. Captain D K Sharma, Public Relations Officer of Indian Navy, said, “We have launched two P-8I aircrafts, one of which was d...

May gets Hollande ultimatum: free trade depends on free movement

Theresa May was warned by the French president, François Hollande, at their first meeting in Paris that the UK cannot expect access to the single market if it wants to put immigration controls on EU citizens. At a joint press conference in the Élysée Palace, Hollande made it clear that the new British prime minister was facing a choice about whether to accept free movement of people in return for free trade. Standing next to May and speaking in French with an official translator, he said: “It’s the most crucial point. That’s the point that will be the subject of the negotiation. “The UK today has access to the single market because it respects the four freedoms. If it wishes to remain within the single market it is its decision to know how far and how it will have to abide...

A woman who sued Trump over alleged sexual assault, breaks silence

Jill Harth, a makeup artist, has stayed quiet for almost 20 years about the way Trump pursued her, and – according to a lawsuit she instigated – cornered her and groped her in his daughter’s bedroom. After Trump mounted his campaign for the White House, details emerged of the 1997 complaint, in which Harth accused him of “attempted ‘rape’”. She said she was quickly inundated with interview requests from major US television networks, but resolved not to speak about the events – until Trump publicly said in May that her claims were “meritless” and his daughter Ivanka gave an interview in which she said her father was “not a groper”. Harth, who feels she has been publicly branded a liar and believes her business has suffered because of her association with the allegations, de...

Muslim passenger kicked off American Airlines flight after attendant announced: I’ll be watching you

A Muslim man was removed from an American Airlines flight after a flight attendant publicly announced his name, seat number and said she would be watching him. Mohamed Ahmed Radwan had boarded a plane in Charlotte, North Carolina and the flight attendant went to the tannoy and said: “Mohamed Ahmed, Seat 25-A: I will be watching you.” The employee made no other announcements about any other passenger. Mr Radwan asked the employee why she had made the announcements. She reportedly responded that he was being “too sensitive”. The passenger then reported the incident to two other American Airlines employees. He was told he must leave the plane as he had made the first air stewardess “uncomfortable”. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has filed a complaint about the inci...

Labour MPs must unite to take on Tories after leadership vote, says Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn has issued a plea to Labour MPs to unite behind him once the leadership election is over. Launching his campaign to see off a challenge from former shadow cabinet minister Owen Smith, the Labour leader said that after the election result is declared on September 24, it will be "the job, the duty, the responsibility" of every Labour MP to "get behind the party" and take on the Conservative Government. Mr Corbyn is favourite to win the postal ballot of Labour's members - whose ranks he said had swelled to more than 500,000 - as well as the 183,000 people who signed up this week as registered supporters and the affiliated supporters in the unions. But Mr Smith has the nominations of 162 of the party's MPs - some 70% of its representation in the Commons - along w...

Russia warned Erdogan about cope attempt

The coup attempt in Turkey was thwarted thanks to intel provided by Tehran and Moscow, according to several Arab news outlets. Iran’s Fars News Agency (FNA) and news outlets in Syria reported that government officials in Ankara revealed that Erdogan “received a warning” from Russia hours before the attempted coup. In addition, it was reported that Erdogan consulted the Iranian government on how to thwart the coup. According to the reports, senior level Russian officials told Erdogan last Friday, hours before the coup, that an inevitable military attempt to overthrow him will take place in the near future. Russian military officials stated that encoded and highly sensitive messages that were sent to and from Turkish military officials indicating that the Turkish army was pl...
