Afghan teen killed after injuring passengers on German train

A teenage Afghan migrant armed with an ax and a knife attacked passengers aboard a regional train in southern Germany on Monday night, injuring four people before he was shot and killed by police as he fled, authorities said. Wuerzburg police said on their Facebook page that three of the victims suffered serious injuries and one was slightly injured. Another 14 people were being treated for shock. Bavaria's top security official, state Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, told Germany's ARD television that the attacker had been identified as a 17-year-old Afghan. German officials did not identify the victims, but Hong Kong's immigration department said in a statement Tuesday that among those injured in the attack were four members of a family of five from the southern Chine...

Analysis: Who is truly behind the recent coup attempt in the Turkish Republic

Jerusalem Online examined who is truly behind the recent coup attempt, what steps Erdogan can take to consolidate his rule, the threat that still exists for Erdogan’s regime, what will happen following the lynching of the Turkish soldiers and the bombing of the Turkish Parliament building, the international reaction, and what the implications are for Israel. In the wake of the recent coup attempt in Turkey, there are a lot of speculations regarding who is truly behind the recent coup attempt, what steps Erdogan could take to consolidate his rule from here, the threat that still exists for Erdogan’s regime, what will happen following the lynching of the Turkish soldiers and the bombing of the Turkish Parliament building, the international reaction to the coup attempt, and w...

Great British Bake Off’s Nadiya Hussain reduced to tears by mean tweet

Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain on Sunday revealed how she reduced to tears by a mean tweet. The 31-year-old received a barrage of anti-Islamic abuse on social media and had to have a police presence at her home after winning the BBC programme last year. In an interview with Daily Express's S Magazine, Hussain said that the last time she cried was when she read a mean tweet. She added that if she could pass a law she would give all Twitter trolls ASBOs. Hussain, who baked the Queen's 90th birthday cake, said the most poignant moment of her life was winning The Great Bake Off last year. But she added that she would apologise to her "brothers and sisters for being a monster", continuing: "They've had to deal with a really big change since I won Bake Off." "I use...

May to speak in favour of Trident renewal as Labour MPs given free vote

Life onboard a Trident submarine as parliament prepares to vote on future of Britain's nuclear deterrent. Prime Minister Theresa May will warn it would be a “gross irresponsibility” for the UK to surrender its independent nuclear deterrent, when she opens the debate on Trident renewal in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon. In her first statement to the House as Prime Minister, Ms May will say: “We cannot compromise on our national security. We cannot outsource the grave responsibility we shoulder for keeping our people safe.” She will also issue a stark warning to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has campaigned against nuclear weapons for decades, and has given his MPs a free vote on the issue, “We cannot abandon our ultimate safeguard out of misplaced idealism,” she...

Emergency Landing For Boris Johnson At Luton

A problem, reportedly with the hydraulics, forces a plane carrying the new Foreign Secretary to make an emergency landing. Boris Johnson's first overseas trip as Foreign Secretary got off to a shaky start as his plane was forced to make an emergency landing on its way to Brussels. The plane, described by the Ministry of Defence as a small military aircraft, took off from RAF Northolt on Sunday afternoon but had to land at Luton Airport. A Foreign Office spokesman said there was a "technical issue" on the RAF flight, which had been carrying Mr Johnson and some officials to the Belgian capital. No further details were available. He added: "The Foreign Secretary thanked the RAF crew for their professionalism and was grateful to Luton Airport for the brief, unscheduled welcome...

I can block UK exit from Europe: Scotland’s First Minister

Nicola Sturgeon has suggested she has a veto over when Britain leaves the European Union, in comments that will infuriate Right-wing ministers in charge of Brexit. Scotland’s First Minister conceded that she can dictate the timing of a British exit from the EU in an interview on BBC1’s The Andrew Marr Show. Asked if she had a “veto in her back pocket” about when Britain leaves the EU, she replied: “I think we are in a very strong position. That is a position that I am going to use as well as I can.” Her comments came after Liam Fox, the new International Trade Secretary, and David Davis, the new Brexit Secretary, said they wanted Britain to start formal exit talks by the end of this year. On Friday, Theresa May indicated that Brexit could be delayed as she said she would n...

Turkey says 6,000 detained over coup attempt as US relations fray

Turkey says it has detained 6,000 people following Friday’s coup attempt, as Washington rejected claims that it was somehow involved in the failed putsch. “The cleansing [operation] is continuing,” said Bekir Bozdag, the Turkish justice minister, in a television interview. “Some 6,000 detentions have taken place. The number could surpass 6,000.” The US State Department released a statement denying any link to the events, after the Turkish government, a nominal US ally, blamed the coup on an exiled Turkish dissident who has been given sanctuary in the American state of Pennsylvania. “Public insinuations or claims about any role by the United States in the failed coup attempt are utterly false and harmful to our bilateral relations,” the State Department said, summarising a ...

Why Italy’s banking crisis will shake the eurozone to its core

Small savers protesting outside the Banca Etruria earlier this year. They call them le sofferenze the suffering. The imagery is striking, the thousands of sofferenze across Italy, unwanted and ignored, a problem unsolved. But despite the emotional name, these are not people. They are loans. Bad debts, draining banks of profits and undermining economic growth. The name is less clinical than the English term non-performing loans, a reflection of the Italian authorities’ emotional rather than business-like approach to the problem. None the less, the loans are indeed causing real suffering. The €360bn (£300bn) of sofferenze from Italian banks show borrowers are weighed down with debts they cannot afford, while the banks are struggling to offer new credit to the households and...

Ramifications of terror attacks in Bangladesh

Dr Fahmida Khatun:  At a time when Bangladesh has broken the 6 percent growth trap and has begun its journey towards achieving a faster growth of about 7 percent, and at a time when Bangladesh has achieved the status of a lower middle income country with a per capita income of USD1314 in 2015, it experiences the greatest shock in recent times. This has suddenly changed the perspective on Bangladesh. The ruthless killing of 20 lives, including 17 foreigners at the Holey Artisan Bakery of Gulshan in Dhaka on July 1, 2016, by terrorists has brought new realities for Bangladesh. A country which boasts to be a moderately Islamic country, holding the values of Islam yet being tolerant to other religions and a country that is reputed for its warmth and hospitality towards foreign nationals, has c...

I am not embarrassed at all

The brother of a murdered Pakistani celebrity yesterday said he is "not embarrassed" to have killed her, as Qandeel Baloch's death reignited polarising calls for action against the "epidemic" of honour killings. The strangling of Baloch, judged by many in deeply conservative Muslim Pakistan as infamous for selfies and videos that by Western standards would appear tame, has prompted shock and revulsion. "Yes of course, I strangled her," Baloch's brother Muhammad Wasim told reporters at a defiant press conference organised by police in the city of Multan early yesterday. "She was on the ground floor while our parents were asleep on the roof top," he continued. "It was around 10.45 pm when I gave her a tablet... and then killed her." "I am not embarrassed at all over what I d...
