Facebook provides users info to Bangladesh govt

Popular social networking site Facebook has provided users’ information to the Bangladesh authorities for the first time. The Facebook authorities gave the information to the Bangladesh government after it made 12 requests about 31 users’ accounts between July and December last year, according to Government Requests Report released by the site yesterday. “We respond to valid requests relating to criminal cases. Each and every request we receive is checked for legal sufficiency and we reject or require greater specificity on requests that are overly broad or vague,” the report stated. It also restricted four contents upon the Bangladesh government’s appeal. “We restricted access to pieces of content alleged to violate local law regarding blasphemy, pursuant to a request fro...

North Korea gives US citizen 10 years hard labour for spying

Kim Dong-Chul was handed the sentence for “subversion” and “espionage”, Xinhua news agency said in a short dispatch. The 62-year-old issued a video confession in March where he admitted stealing North Korean secrets, though this was speculated to have been made under duress. Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) had previously said he was arrested while carrying a USB stick with stolen “nuclear and military secrets.” "You could say that my anti-North Korean behaviour was also instigated by the United States," Mr Kim was quoted as saying in his confession. Pyongyang last month sentenced American student Otto Warmbier to 15 years' hard labour for crimes against the state after he tearfully admitted that he tried to steal a propaganda banner from a hotel. North Korea insists Mr K...

Six Early Warning Signs Of Ovarian Cancer

Often referred to as the silent killer, ovarian cancer is universally feared as it presents very few symptoms. By the time it’s noticeable, it’s usually too late, with only 20% of cases being detected early enough to treat. Thankfully, the disease isn’t invisible. Here are six early warning signs to watch out for. 1. A Swollen Stomach Ovarian cancer causes internal inflammation, which can become visible. Of course, there are many reasons for a swollen stomach, such as Burger King, being a couch potato, or receiving a visit from the stork. Only be concerned if you’re ballooning for no reason. 2. Unexplained Weight Loss Whilst many people would be glad to ditch a few pounds, without any exercise or dieting, sudden weight loss is a common symptom of cancer, and should be inve...

Zen Lambert urged the BD government to ensure respect for democratic principles

Jean Lambert, chair of European Parliament’s delegation for South Asia, has condemned the recent killings in Bangladesh, including those of an LGBT magazine editor and his friend. While expressing our deepest condolences with the families of the victims, we also encourage and welcome the peaceful demonstrations of students condemning this violence, Lambert said in a statement. Government authorities, political parties and civil society should stand together against the actions of violent extremists in Bangladesh. The perpetrators of these murders must be swiftly brought to justice. Her statement adds to the tally of condemnation that flew in from all across the globe after killings of Rajshahi University Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, followed by murders of Xulhaz M...

Britain’s borders left exposed as screening system crashed twice in 48 hours

Border Force check the passports of passengers arriving at Gatwick Airport Britain's borders were left exposed to terrorists last year after a Home Office computer system which screens passengers crashed twice in 48 hours, The Telegraph can reveal. The eBorders system, which was put in place after the 9/11 terror attacks to protect the country from jihadists, ground to a halt in June last year. The incident, which this newspaper has seen details of, was deemed so serious that Theresa May, the Home Secretary, was alerted by officials close to midnight. The Home Office refused to reveal how often the system has crashed or whether there have been any outages since the incident. Technicians worked through the night to fix the system amid fears from border officials that hundre...

Saudi Arabia is not ready for women drivers, says deputy crown prince Mohammed bin Salman

Saudi Defense Minister and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced his "Vision 2030" economic reform plan (Picture: [copyright]) Saudi Arabia is not yet ready to end the world's only ban on women driving cars. Despite moves towards rights for women under King Abdullah before his death, deputy crown prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud has said the Saudi community "is not convinced about women driving." The 30-year-old prince, who has amassed increasing powers since his father King Salman came to the throne, said the topic was not about Islam but about cultural norms. "[Women driving] is not a religious issue as much as it is an issue that relates to the community itself that either accepts it or refuses it," he said, according to local media reports. The defence mi...

Naz Shah MP: timeline of events leading to MP’s suspension from Labour party

Labour MP Naz Shah admits to the Guido Fawkes blog she wrote a Facebook post arguing for Israel’s population to be “transported” out of the Middle East to America. Shah is currently a member of the House of Commons home affairs select committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the rise of antisemitism. The post, shared nine months before she beat George Galloway to win the seat in Bradford West, showed a picture of Israel superimposed over the United States, with the approving comment: “Problem solved and save you bank charges for the £3bn you transfer yearly.” In comments below, Shah said she would tweet Barack Obama and David Cameron with the suggestion and said it would “save them some pocket money”. Shah, parliamentary private secretary to the shadow chancellor, Jo...

More than a million people in UK living in poverty

More than a million people in the UK are so poor they cannot afford to eat properly, keep clean or stay warm and dry, according to a groundbreaking attempt to measure the scale of destitution in Britain. A study by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) found that 184,500 households experienced a level of poverty in a typical week last year that left them reliant on charities for essentials such as food, clothes, shelter and toiletries. More than three-quarters of destitute people reported going without meals, while more than half were unable to heat their home. Destitution affected their mental health, left them socially isolated and prone to acute feelings of shame and humiliation. Although the study could not demonstrate that destitution had increased in recent years, it ...

Britain’s property market is going to implode as housing nears peak affordability

Property prices in Britain may be surging due to a horrendous imbalance of supply and demand — but the market is poised to implode. Why? Because Britons are not earning enough money to either get on the housing ladder or are spending such a large portion of their wages on mortgages that may not be sustainable. Well, not unless everyone suddenly gets a huge pay rise over the next year or so. That's the assumption in the latest figures from think tank Resolution Foundation, which show that lower- and middle-income households are spending 26% of their salaries on housing, compared to 18% back in 1995. In London, households spend 28% of their income on housing. The think tank said this is the equivalent to adding 10 percentage points onto income tax. Only the rich are not feel...

IS wants Paris style terror attacks in UK

Open borders across Europe have allowed Isil to plant sleeper cells across the continent and in the UK, poised to launch Paris or Brussels-style massacres, America’s intelligence chief has warned. James Clapper, the US Director of National Intelligence, warned the free movement of citizens around the EU was “in conflict” with the need to protect security. He said there is evidence of fanatics from Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil) in Britain, Germany and Italy secretly plotting outrages like those witnessed in France and Belgium . He warned some have taken advantage of the migrant crisis to slip in to Europe and called for better intelligence sharing between member states. The comments came a week after the Daily Telegraph launched a campaign to highlight weaknesses ...
