    Islam retained the status of state religion with the High Court today rejecting a writ petition challenging the legality of a constitutional provision in this regard. Fifteen distinguished citizens filed the writ petition with the HC in 1988 challenging the amendment that gave "Islam" the status of state religion. The petitioners have no jurisdiction to move such a petition, the HC bench that binned the petition said while passing its ruling this afternoon.     A man shot by police in Brussels has been charged with membership of a terror group following a raid in France last week. Belgian prosecutors named him as A. Abderrahmane who was detained on Saturday for a further 24 hours after being shot during a raid in the Brussels district of Schaerbeek. Meanwhile, police in Brussels said they carried out 13 new raids on Sunday, taking nine people into custody for questioning and releasing a further five. The man who has now been charged was wearing a backpack at a tram stop in Brussels when he failed to respond to police demands to raise his arms and was shot in the leg as he stood with a young girl. Bangladesh Govt to curb issuing official passports

    The government has decided to curb the issuance of official passports for its employees across the country in view of allegations of human trafficking in disguise of government officials. In a circular, the home ministry today said only the employees who have been appointed with the government revenue budget and obtained government order (GO) will be given official passports. “No one will get official passport without a GO.     In the name of ‘scientific research’, Japan has killed 333 minke whales, including over 200 pregnant females, in the Antarctic in 2015-16 whaling season, according to the country’s Institute for Cetacean Research. A fleet of four ships returned on March 23, from their 115-day expedition to conduct ‘scientific’ whaling activities which is a blatant disregard of the ruling by the International Court of Justice in 2014 that challenged the scientific legitimacy of the program, reports National Geographic.     An explosion in the Pakistani city of Lahore has killed at least 38 people and injured dozens more, officials say. The blast was in a large park in the south-west of the city, where many people had gathered late on Sunday. Police told the BBC it appeared to be a suicide bomb.     A Chinese pensioner was caught on camera demanding compensation after apparently being knocked down by a tiny plastic toy car. Captured in Changde, in China's Hunan Province, the footage shows the woman refusing to stand up until she is paid for the accident.
