Ex-Nepal PM Sushil Koirala dies

Sushil Koirala, a former Nepalese prime minister and leader of nation's largest political party, has died in Kathmandu. He was 78. His doctor, Karbir Nath Yogi, said Tuesday that Koirala died due to complications from pneumonia and respiratory failure. Koirala was a key figure in adoption of Nepal's new constitution last September. After ethnic Madhesis later blocked border points with India and imposed a general strike in south Nepal to protest against the constitution, Koirala attempted to resolve the issue by negotiating with the protesters. Koirala spent his life in politics fighting for democracy in Nepal and led protests in 2006 that ended a centuries-old monarchy system and turned Nepal into a republic. His politics meant he was always in trouble with the country's k...

At least eight dead, 150 injured in Bavaria train crash in southern Germany

Two commuter trains crashed head-on Tuesday morning in a remote area in southern Germany, killing at least nine people and injuring some 150, some of whom had to be cut out of the wreckage and transported across a river for medical care, police said. The two regional trains crashed before 7 a.m. on the single line that runs near Bad Aibling, in Bavaria, and that several wagons overturned, police spokesman Stefan Sonntag told The Associated Press. Fifty of those hurt have serious injuries, he added. It took hours to reach some of the injured in the wreckage and authorities were still working at midday to remove the final body from the train. "Once that is done then the investigators can begin their work," federal police spokesman Rainer Scharf told the AP from the scene. Th...

19 Things You Didn’t Know Your Microwave Could Do

The microwave is a college staple, always there to help you make the essentials: easy mac, mug cakes, and ramen. It helps you make your meals quickly and efficiently, but are you maximizing your microwave’s potential? These life hacks will help you realize all the things your microwave can do and help you cook your food more efficiently. 1. Soften your ice cream Microwave your ice cream (with the lid off) in ten-second intervals until the desired consistency is reached. 2. Soften brown sugar If you ever need to use brown sugar in a recipe, such as for these snickerdoodles, add brown sugar to a bowl with one teaspoon of water and cover with a paper towel. Microwave it in 30-second intervals, stirring the sugar in between. 3. Toast nuts, coconuts, or bread crumbs Evenly spre...

Alexanda Kotey: Second member of The Beatles Isis death squad named as Londoner

A second man from west London has been named as a member of the Isis execution squad spearheaded by so-called “Jihadi John”. The group, known among their captives as “The Beatles” because of their British accents, were led by Londoner Mohammed Emwazi and have been described as some of the most brutal jailors in Isis’s ranks. A second man in the terror cell can now be named as Emwazi’s friend Alexanda Kotey, according to an investigation by Buzzfeed News and the Washington Post, which first named Emwazi as “Jihadi John”. Kotey, a 32-year-old convert who attended the Al-Manaar mosque in Ladbroke Grove, west London, alongside Emwazi, has separately been named by ITV News. The mosque has condemned their actions. The UK Foreign Office has declined to comment on the latest devel...

Northern England transport planners reject ‘Noyster cards’

The 40-mile journey between Sheffield and Manchester can easily take two hours by car, and the fastest train takes 48 minutes. Travellers in the north of England will not be offered a “Noyster card”, a contactless plastic smartcard based on London’s electronic ticketing system, after officials decided the technology was outdated. Nor will a new east-west rail link be called “Crossrail for the north” after northern leaders took umbrage at the idea of a new line being named after one in the capital. Instead, the priority for the new chief executive and chair of Transport for the North (TfN) is to improve east-west rail links in the region – including a possible new tunnel under the Pennines. Speaking to the Guardian, David Brown, chief executive of TfN, said he wanted to per...

Should Twitter ignore its users

For the last 48 hours Twitter has been… well, all of a Twitter. An article in Buzzfeed suggesting that the social network was about to introduce what is known as an algorithmic timeline - promoting tweets deemed most relevant rather than publishing them in reverse chronological order - sparked a wave of what can only be described as furious panic. Under the hashtag #RIPTwitter, thousands, perhaps millions, told the world that this was the end of civilisation as we know it, that a beautiful thing was being crushed, that the company, whose share price has been tumbling for months, was signing its own death warrant. Finally, the CEO Jack Dorsey was forced to react. "Hello Twitter!" he called out. "Regarding #RIPTwitter: I want you all to know we're always listening. We never ...

Storm Imogen lashes Britain with gales and heavy rain

Britain was lashed by hurricane-force winds that reached nearly 100mph as Storm Imogen battered southern parts of the country and left commuters braced for havoc on the transport networks. Gales and heavy rain have forced road closures and delays to rail services, with airports warning flights may be disrupted. Almost 300 Environment Agency flood warnings are in place across the UK amid heavy downpours, with 59 warnings calling for "immediate action", particularly in the south west and Wales where parts are expected to see up to more than 1.5ins (40mm) of rain during Monday. Rail services in Wales, the south west and in southern areas are being disrupted due to strong winds, with speed restrictions and cancellations, the Severn Bridge was closed eastbound and restricted we...

North Korea Launches Long Range Rocket

North Korea fires rocket into space North Korea has defied international warnings and launched a long-range rocket carrying what it has said is a satellite. The rocket took off at around 9am Pyongyang time from the North's west coast, according to South Korea's defence ministry. In a state TV broadcast, a female North Korean announcer, wearing a traditional dress, said the "epochal" launch, personally ordered by leader Kim Jong-Un, had "successfully put our Earth observation satellite ... into orbit". Japan's NHK broadcaster reported that debris from the rocket was believed to have fallen about 155 miles (250km) off the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula into the East China Sea about 14 minutes after the launch. North Korea launched a long-range missile on Feb. 7, 201...

The 10 worst dates to fly in 2016

Frequent travellers know flights will typically be cheaper when booked further in advance, but there are certain days of the year which will always cost more than others. It is useful to know when the seasons change, as the price difference between a few days can mean savings of hundreds of pounds per person. Some periods are fixed, particularly those around the Christmas holidays, but most change each year, tying in with events such as the Easter and Bank Holidays, along with school half-terms and summer holidays. Flight Centre UK analysed airfare data to calculate the 10 worst dates to travel in 2016: 1. 12 February: A popular date for skiers, prices are reaching the peak price-point for half term school holidays. 2. 24 March: As the Thursday before the Easter long weeke...

Air strikes destroy IS radio station in Afghanistan

Air strikes have destroyed a radio station run by Islamic State jihadists in eastern Afghanistan, officials said Wednesday, two months after the group took to the airwaves in a sign of their growing reach. The Pashto-language "Voice of the Caliphate" beamed IS propaganda in irregularnightly broadcasts from an undisclosed location in Nangarhar province bordering Pakistan. The Afghan defence ministry said the programme was broadcast from a moving vehicle and air strikes on Monday destroyed the transmission equipment hidden in the basement of a house in volatile Achin district. "The radio programme has not been heard since Tuesday," Achin district governor Haji Ghalib told AFP. "It was very demoralising for our troops and it is welcome news that it has been destroyed." The gr...
