German govt agrees tighter asylum rules

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and their left-leaning Social Democrat (SPD) coali-tion partners agreed on Thursday to tighten asylum rules, reaching a compromise on how to stem an influx of migrants that topped one million last year. The new measures include a two-year ban on family reunions for asylum seekers who are granted lim-ited refugee protection and speeding up the deportations of failed applicants, said Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, announcing the deal. A dispute over tighter immigration rules has been straining the ruling coalition, which includes Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavaria-based Christian Social Union (CSU) sister party, as well Gabriel's SPD. All three parties are eager to show voters that, despite deep divisions, t...

Billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Trolls Trump: I Bailed You Out Twice

A Saudi prince may have just beaten Donald Trump at a game of Twitter trolling. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal said on Twitter that he's bailed the billionaire out twice -- and suggested the GOP presidential frontrunner might need his help a third time. The exchange was initiated by Trump, who had retweeted a badly Photoshopped image showing the prince with Fox News host Megyn Kelly, calling him a co-owner of the network: The reply from bin Talal: The prince's tweet included news stories showing that he bought Trump's yacht in 1991, which had been turned over to creditors when he was $900 million in debt, according to Buzzfeed. He also included a link to a story showing that he was part of the group that bought New York City's Plaza Hotel from Trump in 1995. As part of the deal...

Russian Raids Kill 1,400 Syrian Civilians

Almost 1,400 civilians have died in Russian air strikes in Syria since the bombing raids began last September, it has been reported. The aerial attacks have also killed at least 965 Islamic State fighters and 1,233 others from different insurgent groups, according to UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It comes as UN-brokered peace talks are being held in Geneva, Switzerland, to try to end Syria's five-year-old civil war, which has claimed the lives of over 260,000 people and displaced more than half the population. The main Syrian opposition group heading to the discussions, the Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee (HNC), has demanded a halt to Moscow's bombing campaign, which is aimed at helping Syrian President Bashar al Assad. Moscow says it is targeting ...

Zika virus is spreading explosively

Declaring that the Zika virus is "spreading explosively," the World Health Organization announced it will hold an emergency meeting of independent experts Monday to decide if the outbreak should be declared an international health emergency. At a special meeting yesterday in Geneva, WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan said the virus — which has been linked to birth defects and neurological problems — was becoming much more of a threat. One WHO scientist said the Americas could see up to 4 million cases of Zika in the next year. Chan said although there was no definitive proof that the Zika virus was responsible for a spike in the number of babies being born with abnormally small heads in Brazil, "the level of alarm is extremely high." She also noted a possible relationsh...

UK house prices: There is a real and growing risk of a sizeable property market correction

Britain's housing market is ripe for a correction because house prices are reaching the limit of affordability for many people, says a well-known economics research firm. House prices have soared in recent years, especially in London and the south-east of England, fuelled by a shortage of supply and intensifying demand. A healing economy with high employment, growing wages and low interest rates has lifted demand in the property market. But the average house price in England was £302,000 ($435,000) in November 2015, says the ONS, up 50% since 2005. In London the average is £537,000, a 90% increase over a decade. To contrast with pay, average weekly earnings between 2005 and 2015 rose just 23% in England and 19% in London, much slower than property prices. "On balance, the ...

US election 2016: Republican rivals mock Trump over no show

Donald Trump loomed large over the final Republican debate before the Iowa caucuses, despite not being on stage. His absence was mocked by his rivals, who tried to fill the space vacated by Trump's boycott by attacking each other on immigration and other issues. Trump decided to withdraw after Fox News refused to drop debate host Megyn Kelly, whom he accused of bias. The billionaire held a rally nearby, in honour of war veterans, that threatened to overshadow the debate itself. On Monday, voters in Iowa are due to pick their presidential nominee for each party. Days ahead of that critical test, Trump's absence on the stage in Des Moines was keenly felt by his seven rivals in the race to be Republican presidential nominee. Texas Senator Ted Cruz addressed it with humour in ...

Weather warnings as Storm Gertrude’s 90mph winds disrupt power and transport

Storm Gertrude is sweeping the country with winds of more than 90mph, leaving thousands of homes without power, buildings damaged and transport disrupted. A rare red Met Office alert is in place for Orkney and Shetland with dangerous conditions expected throughout Friday. Many other regions have yellow and amber warnings for strong winds, heavy rain, snow and ice as the extreme weather continues to batter the British Isles. Gusts of 91mph have been recorded in South Uist, while Inverbervie in Aberdeenshire and Orlock Head in Northern Ireland were hit by winds of 79mph. Speeds are expected to reach around 65mph in the Borders and the North East of England later in the day and pushing 80mph in North Yorkshire. Forecasters said: Winds are expected to widely gust 60-70mph, pos...

PM Rejects Calls To Take 3,000 Migrant Children

David Cameron has rejected calls to take in refugee children who have become separated from their parents and travelled to Europe. A Downing Street adviser told Sky News they did not want to create "a magnet" to attract more migrants to cross the Mediterranean. However, Britain has offered to resettle more vulnerable children from refugee camps near Syria and offer some assistance to migrant children in Europe. In a somewhat confusing announcement, the Government said a new initiative was being launched to help unaccompanied children in countries surrounding Syria who would be better off in the UK because their "needs cannot be met in the region". Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said the UK would work with the United Nations refugee agency - the UNHCR - to identify ...

Sweden To Expel Up To 80,000 Migrants

Up to 80,000 migrants who arrived in Sweden last year are going to be expelled from the country, its interior minister has announced. Anders Ygeman said thousands of migrants' asylum applications had been rejected. "We are talking about 60,000 people but the number could climb to 80,000," he was quoted as saying by Swedish media. He said the expulsions would be staggered over several years. Police and authorities in charge of migrants have been asked to organise the expulsion. Migrants whose applications are rejected are normally taken out of Sweden using commercial flights. But because of the large number being rejected they would use specially chartered aircraft to take them out of the country, Mr Ygeman said. Sweden accepted more than 160,000 asylum seekers last year, p...
