A writ was filed with the High Court on Sunday seeking a judicial inquiry into alleged torture on Bang-ladesh Bank official Golam Rabbi by some policemen. Supreme Court lawyers Barrister Ehsanur Rahman, Advocate Julfikar Ali Junu and Jahid Hasan, a journalist of Radio Dhoni 91.2 FM, filed the writ petition with the relevant section of the High Court. An HC bench comprising Justice Syed Mohammad Dastagir Husain and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq will hear the writ on Monday. Julian Assange to be questioned by Swedish prosecutors in London

Swedish prosecutors will be allowed to question the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, at the Ecuadorean embassy in London, the South American nation’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, has said. Assange has been living in the west-London building since seeking refuge in 2012, as he awaited extradition to Sweden to face prosecutors over rape allegations. Patino told the Ecuadorean radio station Publica that the country was accepting Sweden’s request to interrogate Assange “as long as the sovereignty of the Ecuadoran state and the laws in the constitution are respected”, the Associated Press reported. He suggested that Swedish authorities could provide their Ecuadoran counterparts with the questions and they could be asked in the presence of a Swedish prosecutor. Later on Fr...

Pakistani boy cuts off own hand after blasphemy mistake

A 15-year-old Pakistani boy cut off his own hand believing he had committed blasphemy, only to be celebrated by his parents and neighbours for the act, police told AFP Friday. Local police chief Nausher Ahmed described how an imam told a gathering at a village mosque that those who love the Prophet Mohammad always say their prayers, then asked who among the crowd had stopped praying. Mohammad Anwar, 15, raised his hand by mistake after apparently mishearing the question. The crowd swiftly accused him of blasphemy so he went to his house and cut off the hand he had raised, put it on a plate, and presented it to the cleric, the police chief said. The incident took place at a village in Hujra Shah Muqeem district, some 125 kilometres (77 miles) south of Lahore, the capital of...

Al Qaeda Kills At Least 27 In Burkina Attacks

At least 27 people have been killed after al Qaeda militants attacked a top hotel and restaurant. Security forces freed 126 hostages around 12 hours after the extremists launched the assaults on the Splendid Hotel and the Cappuccino Cafe across the road in Ouagadougou. French ambassador Gilles Thibault said 27 people had been killed. Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Kabore earlier said the "partial death toll" in the "cowardly and vile" attacks was 23. The victims came from 18 different countries, security minister Simon Compaore said. Four militants were killed. Two of the attackers were women, the president said on national radio. The attack came as two Austrians, a doctor and his wife, were kidnapped in northern Burkina Faso, the security ministry said. It was not immed...

Ruqia Hassan: the woman who was killed for telling the truth about Isis

A photograph of Ruqia Hassan posted on Twitter In July 2015, Ruqia Hassan posted a message on her Facebook page: “Greetings to every girl celebrating Eid in her pyjamas!” It was the kind of dig her followers loved; a sarcastic acknowledgment that small pleasures – such as wearing new clothes on Eid – had become impossible since Raqqa, a small city on the north bank of the Euphrates river, had turned into the dark heart of the Islamic State. It was also the sort of comment that made Hassan’s family fear that she was attracting the wrong kind of attention. They were right: weeks later, she was arrested and imprisoned; two months later, she was dead. Family members say that, in person, the 30-year-old was shy and quiet. Yet on social media she showed no fear, documenting wit...

UK shivers as temperatures plunge to 10C

Temperatures are expected to fall to as low as minus 10C in rural Scotland over the weekend as the winter chill sets in across the UK. Freezing conditions will affect most parts with the Met Office issuing yellow ice warnings covering the east coast of Scotland and England as well as Wales, Northern Ireland and parts of south-west England and the Midlands. With largely clear skies and no cloud cover, the public are being urged to take care on untreated roads and paths hit by frost. Saturday is forecast to be frosty but many areas will stay dry and enjoy sunny spells. Wintry showers will persist in eastern areas. Rural parts of the Highlands and Aberdeenshire will face the lowest temperatures, forecasters said, while around 5cm to 10cm (2-4in) of snow could fall on higher g...

Millions In IS Cash Blown Up By US Airstrike

Video shows millions of dollars of Islamic State (IS) funds being blown up in an American airstrike. The aerial footage, released by the US Defense Department, shows a building being targeted in Mosul - the extremist group's main stronghold in Iraq. Clouds of paper bills quickly fill the air as the building is flattened by two 2,000-pound bombs. The Pentagon said several millions of dollars in cash were destroyed, but the exact amount is not known. The US-led coalition has been targeting IS oil resources and cash piles in the hope of sapping its financial strength. IS earns an estimated £315m ($450m) a year from oil production in its territory in Iraq and Syria. The terror group also has a small army of tax collectors raking in nearly as much from zakat tax, a form of alms...

One brain dead, five hospitalised after drug trial goes wrong in France

One person was left brain-dead and five others hospitalised after participating in a drug trial in France, the country’s Health Minister Marisol Touraine said in a statement on Friday. Touraine said that the six had been taking part in a trial for an oral medication being developed by a European laboratory in the northwestern city of Rennes when a “serious accident” took place. The minister did not say what the medicine was intended to be used for, but French media reported that the trial was for a painkiller containing cannabis. The six volunteers took the medication at a private laboratory, which was “specialised in carrying out clinical trials”, Touraine said. All tests on the drug have now been suspended and trial participants called back. The study was a Phase I clinical tria...

Saudi Minister Urges Britons To Respect Their Brutal Death Penalty

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister has urged Britons to respect his country's death penalty, as the brutal Saudi justice system strains relations between the two countries. Adel Al-Jubeir faced tough questioning from Channel 4 News Jonathan Rugman, who told the ambassador his country has a terrible image problem" and asked: You don't have to execute as many people as you do, do you? The minister responded: We have a fundamental difference, in your country, you do not execute people, we respect it. In our country, the death penalty is part of our laws and you have to respect this as it is the law. The questioning comes after an international outcry over a number of high-profile executions in the state, including that of prominent Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Some 47 prisoners were exe...
