UK weather: Bitterly cold weekend ahead as snow and ice forecast

    Weather forecasters have warned of freezing temperatures and snowy conditions in Britain this weekend, when temperatures could drop to -14C causing chaos on the roads and for rail travellers. Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples told the Daily Telegraph: "There are still snow showers to come for northern and western parts this evening. Overnight Northern Ireland, western and northern parts of Scotland and down through Wales might see a few centimetres." The snow could move as far south as Cornwall and Dartmoor, while the east coast is expected to be worst hit, with snow reaching as far as the Thames Estuary and Kent.     A German town has sent a bus carrying 31 Syrian refugees to Chancellor Angela Merkel's office in Berlin in protest at her open-door migrant policy. Landshut in Bavaria said it was buckling under the strain of an influx that brought 1.1 million migrants to Germany last year. The town's mayor Peter Dreier said he organised the seven-hour journey after residents told him "it's time we set a limit". He called it "an act of desperation" and said he had warned Ms Merkel about his plans in a phone call in October last year. "We are trying to help these people integrate. But that won't work if this year we face another wave of one million, or even more," Mr Dreier added. Alarm as family debt surges by £4,000 in six months

    Families debts have jumped by an alarming £4,000 on average in the space of six months, a report has found. Aviva's Family Finances report found that typical household debt has surged by 42% since summer 2015 to reach the highest levels seen for two and-a-half years. Excluding mortgage borrowing, average family debt now stands at £13,520 - marking a leap of £4,000 from the average debt of £9,520 in summer 2015. The latest report, covering winter 2015, fuelled concerns that many families' finances are finely balanced and the continued availability of cheap credit is leading to households racking up debts on credit cards, overdrafts and personal loans which could become problematic as and when interest rates start to rise. 1971 war hero Lieutenant Genera J.F.R. Jacob dies

    Lieutenant General J.F.R. Jacob (retd), who played a key role in the 1971 war which broke up Pakistan and created Bangladesh, died in New Delhi on Wednesday, a hospital said. The 93-year-old passed away Indian time at about 8.30am at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) due to pneumonia, a hospital official said. He had been admitted on 1 January. Jacob was the Chief of Staff of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command during the 1971 India-Pakistan war that led to Pakistan’s eastern wing seceding and becoming an independent Bangladesh. Jacob also served as the governor of Goa and Punjab.
