UK weather: Bitterly cold weekend ahead as snow and ice forecast

Weather forecasters have warned of freezing temperatures and snowy conditions in Britain this weekend, when temperatures could drop to -14C causing chaos on the roads and for rail travellers. Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples told the Daily Telegraph: "There are still snow showers to come for northern and western parts this evening. Overnight Northern Ireland, western and northern parts of Scotland and down through Wales might see a few centimetres." The snow could move as far south as Cornwall and Dartmoor, while the east coast is expected to be worst hit, with snow reaching as far as the Thames Estuary and Kent. Meteorologist Leon Brown at The Weather Channel tells us a frosty and dry weekend is ahead for much of the country, with plenty of sunshine too. "Saturday nigh...

German Town Sends Bus Of Refugees To Merkel

A German town has sent a bus carrying 31 Syrian refugees to Chancellor Angela Merkel's office in Berlin in protest at her open-door migrant policy. Landshut in Bavaria said it was buckling under the strain of an influx that brought 1.1 million migrants to Germany last year. The town's mayor Peter Dreier said he organised the seven-hour journey after residents told him "it's time we set a limit". He called it "an act of desperation" and said he had warned Ms Merkel about his plans in a phone call in October last year. "We are trying to help these people integrate. But that won't work if this year we face another wave of one million, or even more," Mr Dreier added. Pro-refugee campaigners condemned the trip as a publicity stunt that exploited the refugees, who are all Syrian...

Is there a place on your body that you shouldn’t put your phone?

As wireless technology has become widespread over the past two decades, researchers have worked to understand whether it could have negative effects on health. A recent report on New.com.au quoted Dr Devra Davis, an American epidemiologist, who said she was concerned by mobile phone use and electromagnetic fields. She also spoke of an incident where a young women allegedly developed a breast cancer tumour in the shape of her phone, after she put the device into her bra. However, other health experts have sought to reassure the public that there is "absolutely no evidence" to show that the rays omitted from phones can cause cancer. Dr Mireille Toledano, an epidemiologist at Imperial College London told The Independent that such cases are merely anecdotal. Citing the case of...

Alarm as family debt surges by £4,000 in six months

Families debts have jumped by an alarming £4,000 on average in the space of six months, a report has found. Aviva's Family Finances report found that typical household debt has surged by 42% since summer 2015 to reach the highest levels seen for two and-a-half years. Excluding mortgage borrowing, average family debt now stands at £13,520 - marking a leap of £4,000 from the average debt of £9,520 in summer 2015. The latest report, covering winter 2015, fuelled concerns that many families' finances are finely balanced and the continued availability of cheap credit is leading to households racking up debts on credit cards, overdrafts and personal loans which could become problematic as and when interest rates start to rise. The latest figure recorded by Aviva is the highest si...

7 dead as suicide attackers hit Jakarta

Suicide attackers struck the Indonesian capital Thursday, with a series of explosions and gunfire that tore through a Starbucks cafe and shook an embassy district in the Muslim-majority nation. At least seven people were known to have died -- including two who police said blew themselves up in the area which is also overlooked by United Nations offices, in what the country's president dubbed "acts of terror". An unknown number of gunmen were involved in the blasts, including at a police post that left four mangled bodies lying in the road. "Five terrorists are dead," Security Minister Luhut Panjaitan told reporters. He said that one Indonesian and one Dutch citizen had died, but the Dutch embassy said only that one of its nationals was wounded and being treated in hospital...

Why fear of war weighs heavily for Russians in the New Year

Russian servicemen equip an Iskander tactical missile system at the Army-2015 international military-technical forum in Kubinka, outside Moscow, Russia, in June 2015. Magomed Tolboev, a former Soviet bomber pilot, says he feels that relations between Russia and the US are worse today than they were even in the depths of the cold war. In those days his job, for which he trained rigorously, was to take out a US air base in Turkey with a nuclear strike. "There was some kind of predictable order in cold war times. Two camps, two leaders, and everything depended on them. Now there are so many different players, many of them not under control by either side," such as North Korea or the many factions vying for dominance in Syria. "So we have not only growing tension between Mosco...
