Muslim prayer hall in Corsica vandalised after attacks on firemen

A Muslim prayer hall in Ajaccio, Corsica, was vandalised on December 25, 25015 Demonstrators ransacked a Muslim prayer hall and attempted to burn copies of the Koran on the French island of Corsica Friday, police said, following a night of violence that left two firefighters injured. Tensions had mounted in Ajaccio on Christmas Day after two firefighters and a police officer were wounded overnight in Jardins de L’Empereur, a low-income neighbourhood of the city when they were “ambushed” by “several hooded youths”, authorities said. On Friday afternoon around 150 people had gathered in front of police headquarters in the island’s capital in a show of support for the police and firefighters, officials said in a statement. But some in that crowd broke away to join as many as ...

Turkey’s Erdogan talks man on bridge out of suicide

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan used his celebrated rhetorical skills to save a life on Friday, preventing a man from jumping off Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge. The man was apparently preparing to jump to his death when Erdogan's motorcade was passing over the bridge linking Europe with Asia after Friday prayers. News footage showed Erdogan's bodyguards bringing the sobbing man, who appeared to be in his early 30s, to talk to him through the window of his car. After a few moments, the man can be seen kissing Erdogan's hand behind the barrier of the Bosporus Bridge in Istanbul, on December 25, 2015 The man was then escorted to safety, the Dogan news agency reported. It said police had been trying for almost two hours to talk the man out of committing suicide after he a...

Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande offer David Cameron three year EU migrant benefits ban

The German and French governments have offered David Cameron a deal that partially meets his demands to renegotiate European Union migrant welfare rules, it has been reported. The Politico Europe website cites French officials close to the talks who say Francois Hollande and Angelea Merkel have told Mr Cameron they would support EU migrants being banned from claiming in-work benefits for three years. Banning EU migrants from claiming in-work benefits, like tax credits, for four years when they first arrived is Mr Cameron’s main goal in the talks. “British officials are open to compromises and alternatives, and David Cameron got the impression last week that several heads of state and government were ready for compromise as well,” a French official close to the talks report...

Islamic Extremist are today’s king Herodos say Archbishops

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby Jihadists driven by vision of 'apocalypse' warns Welby in stark Christmas message Britain's two most senior clerics have drawn on the darker side of the nativity story in hard-hitting Christmas sermons warning of the possible "elimination" of Christianity from the region of its birth. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, and Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, both draw comparisons between the Biblical account of the mass murder of children around Bethlehem on the orders of King Herod and the 21st Century Jihadist threat. In his Christmas morning sermon at Canterbury Cathedral, Archbishop Welby is expected to warn that that the so-called Islamic State group - a...

Modi’s surprise visit in Pakistan when return fron Afganistan

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Pakistan on a surprise visit in which he will meet his Paki-stani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. Modi was on his way back to India from Afghanistan when he stopped off in the eastern city of Lahore. The visit coincides with Sharif's birthday. Modi is the first Indian PM to visit Pakistan since 2004. Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours have been high in recent years but relations have begun to warm. The pair met briefly in Paris last month on the sidelines of the COP21 climate change conference. The two countries have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947, two of them over Kashmir. Kashmir, claimed by both countries in its entirety, has been a flashpoint for more than 60 years. A ceasefire agreed...

Queen’s Christmas message: Light shines in the darkness

The Queen will use her Christmas Day address to highlight the "moments of darkness" the world has confronted but will also speak about the positive Christian message of light triumphing over the dark. A series of terrorist atrocities have shocked the world during 2015, from the mass shootings and bombings in Paris last month to the gun attack at a Tunisia resort during the summer. But the Queen, whose address traditionally has a strong religious framework reflecting her own faith, will sound an optimistic tone when she quotes a verse from the Bible. Reflecting on the past 12 months, the monarch will say during her Christmas Day broadcast: "It is true that the world has had to confront moments of darkness this year, but the Gospel of John contains a verse of great hope, oft...

UK economy in shock slowdown as recovery loses steam

Official figures show UK growth was weaker than thought in the second and third quarters. Britain's recovery is losing steam, according to official data that showed growth this year was weaker than previously thought. The economy expanded by just 0.4pc in the third quarter, from a previous estimate of 0.5pc, according to revised figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Growth in the second quarter was also revised down to 0.5pc. Statisticians had previously thought the economy grew by 0.7pc over the period. The ONS said weaker services growth drove the third-quarter revision as financial services firms expanded at a much slower pace than initially thought. Inventories led to the second-quarter change. On an annual basis the UK economy expanded by 2.1p...
