Newham, East London, sees UK’s biggest house price rise

Newham in east London experienced the biggest rise in property values during 2015, according to Halifax, as buyers priced out of the heart of the capital looked for houses within commuting distance of the city. Stamp duty changes have made it more expensive to buy houses at the top end of the market, meaning Kensington and Chelsea was among the top 10 areas showing the weakest property growth last year, with prices up just 1%. In contrast, prices in Newham jumped 22%, while Royston in Hertfordshire and the London boroughs of Redbridge, Enfield, Croydon and Bexley were also in the top 10 risers. Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales was the worst performer in the Halifax survey, with prices down 3.8%, followed by Colwyn Bay in north Wales, and Durham, north-east England. Halifax’s ...

Britain’s flood affected areas of serious degradation of the North: Thousands Threatened As York River Levels Rise

York, the city of north England flooding Engineers have been examining how to restore power to the Foss barrier building while troops spent Sunday stacking sandbags, until they ran out, forcing the council to beg neighbouring authorities for help. Thousands of homes in northern England have been left without power, with almost 6,000 hoping to be reconnected today. One of the flooded substations was in Rochdale, which five years ago had its flood defences given a £470,000 upgrade to protect power supplies against a "1-in-200-year" flood. Teams from insurance companies have been on the ground in the affected areas. Customers have been advised to get their claims started as soon as possible and to take photos of damaged items. Aviva's Rob Townend said: "Any damage caused...

Malaysia Airlines plane flies in the wrong direction from New Zealand to Kuala Lumpur on Christmas Day

An investigation has been launched after a Malaysian Airlines plane appeared to fly in the wrong direction after taking off from New Zealand on Christmas Day. Flight MH132 usually takes a direct route heading north-west over Australia on its way from Auckland to Kuala Lumpur but radar data showed the aircraft heading south for almost an hour. The New Zealand Herald reported that the pilot questioned the Airbus A330’s path just eight minutes into the flight, which took off at 2.23am local time. Passengers were not alerted during discussions with air traffic controllers at the Auckland Oceanic control centre, as the plane Tasman Sea before turning north. The Independent Malaysia-Airlines-flight-path.jpg Airways, which manages air traffic control for New Zealand, said there w...

UK set to head western Europe’s best performing economies: report forecasts

The UK is set to become the best performing economy in western Europe next year, and is likely to overtake powerhouses Germany and Japan in the 2030s, a report said today. The World Economic League Table from think tank the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), said the UK is set to rise up the world rankings due to the strength of its IT and software industries as well as its culturally diverse workforce. The UK is currently the fifth largest economy in the world, with a gross domestic product (GDP) worth three trillion US dollars (£2 trillion) this year, behind Germany at 3.3 trillion US dollars (£2.2 trillion), and Japan in third spot at 4.1 trillion US dollars (£2.7 trillion). The US remains the richest country in the world with a GDP worth 18 trillion US ...

Foreign shoppers help boost Boxing Day sales figures

Shoppers from overseas with a penchant for luxury goods helped to fuel a Boxing Day sales bonanza as millions hit the stores, leading experts to suggest that reports about the death of the high street have been premature. Retail analysts said wealthy tourists from China and the Middle East were spending four or five times as much as their British counterparts on items such as jewellery, watches and designer handbags. There were claims that shoppers were on course to spend a record £3.74bn in the Boxing Day sales. Selfridges said it had enjoyed its most successful ever first hour of trading, taking more than £2m from 9am-10am. There were nearly 4,000 people snaking around the outside of the department store even before it opened its doors. Harrods saw one of its biggest que...

Floods of a biblical proportion leave cities: towns and villages under water

It was the day the floodwaters inexorably advanced across the Pennines, leaving much of the north of England sodden and beleaguered. From Greater Manchester in the north-west to parts of North Yorkshire some 50 miles to the east, Boxing Day 2015 will be remembered as the day the rains came. In Todmorden, in West Yorkshire’s Calder Valley, Rebecca Marshall was last night facing the grim prospect of having to abandon her home as the floodwaters slowly rose around her house. The incessant rains had left the little town cut off after all the roads in and out were flooded. By late afternoon the waters were “inches” from the top of the local defence wall and Marshall was stuck inside her home without electricity. Then floodwaters started to rise through her floorboards. “At the ...

Myanmar’s army chief questions Thailand murder verdict

The head of Myanmar's military joined growing criticism Sunday against the death sentences handed down to two men from Myanmar for a double murder on a Thai resort island, calling on Thailand's military government to review the case. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing's comments, carried prominently by state media, came three days after the men were convicted of murdering two British tourists on the island of Koh Tao last year. The verdict has sparked daily protests in Myanmar and attracted global attention. The army chief urged Thailand to "review the evidence" that led to the convictions of the two migrants, Win Zaw Htun and Zaw Lin, both 22, who say Thai police tortured them into confessing. The men were found guilty of killing David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23, whose batte...

David Cameron promised: More troops deployed to do whatever is needed for flood victims

Heavy rains continue to cause more flooding in northern England, with several homes being evacuated in Yorkshire and Lancashire, and rivers overflowing in Manchester, Hebden Bridge and Leeds. Severe flood warnings, including those indicating a danger to life, have been issued. The army has been deployed to some villages to bolster flood defense. The Met Office has warned of further rainfall for northern England, Scotland and Wales. The Prime Minister has promised to send more troops to "do whatever is needed" to help people in large swathes of northern England stricken by floods. Thousands of people are being evacuated after "unprecedented" levels of rain have caused rivers to burst their banks and left homes under water in York, Leeds and Manchester. The Government has vo...

Dealing with a pet plant

Choices The toughest decision you'll need to make is getting the right plant. The aptly named creepers have no sense of privacy and I don't advise getting one. Tubers show signs of growth underground, and are uninteresting without a see-through container. If you have pet birds, I suggest killing two with one stone by planting bird seeds. You don't have to buy bird seeds in the future if you cultivate it and you get to keep both pets. Money plants are a popular catch these days on the false premise it will bring you money. Cacti are trendy desktop buddies that have large watering cycles, but are very aggressive towards foreigners. Why can't the cactus be more socially and racially accepting? Fruits and vegetables take a lot of space and wouldn't be classified as pets but more of what cows a...

Planes in near-miss at Dublin Airport after air traffic control mix-up

A Ryanair plane lands at Dublin Airport Departing and arriving aircraft came within 800 metres of colliding at Dublin Airport, an air accident investigation report has said. The airport was busy on March 8 this year and a scheduled flight to London Luton was cleared for take-off as an incoming plane approached. An air traffic controller misheard a radio signal from the pilot of the departing aircraft requesting more time to prepare and asked it to take off speedily. As the plane slowed on the way to the runway the controller changed his mind and tried but failed to stop it. Air accident investigators said: "At their closest point the aircraft were 807 metres apart; however the rate of closure was low." A few weeks later two Ryanair planes clipped wings as they taxied in Du...
