Indira Gandhi: Mujib Must Be Freed

Nicholas Carroll: On December 16, 1971, just a few hours after the surrender of the Pakistan army, then Prime Minister of In-dia, Indira Gandhi gave her first exclusive interview to journalist Nicholas Carroll, published in The Age on December 20, 1971. Here we publish the whole interview. In the first exclusive interview she has given since the Indo-Pakistan war began, Mrs. Gandhi told me yesterday that she has no doubt that India and Pakistan will establish a friendly relationship. She is convinced that there can be stability in the Indian sub-continent “if outsiders didn't interfere.” There were my questions and her replies: Carroll: You have carried out your declared objectives regarding Bangladesh. You have made it clear that India has no territorial ambitions. How long will it be bef...

45th Victory Day today: Nation celebrating as Freed Happy Day

The nation celebrates the 45th Victory Day today, commemorating its glorious victory in a nine month war against Pakistan occupation forces in 1971. This year, Victory Day is going to be celebrated within one month into the executions of condemned war criminals Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed who were hanged for their war crimes in the early hours of November 22. On this day in 1971, the chief of the Pakistani occupation forces, Gen AAK Niazi, along with his 93,000 Pakistani troops, surrendered at Ramna Racecourse, now Suhrawardy Udyan, in Dhaka following their miserable defeat to the joint forces of Mukti Bahini and Mitra Bahini. In one of the heinous acts of genocide in human history, the Pakistan army and their local collaborators had launched...

EU referendum voters warned no certainty PM’s renegotiation would be binding

EU referendum voters warned no certainty PM's renegotiation would be binding Voters in the EU referendum should be made aware there is "no certainty" of any agreed reforms actually being implemented, a committee of MPs said. The European Scrutiny Committee said David Cameron's proposals "will not deliver the legally binding and irreversible agreement leading to reform of the EU nor a fundamental change in the UK's relationship's" he said he wanted. And some elements would require treaty change that could not be put in place or guaranteed for the future by the December 2017 deadline set by the Prime Minister for the UK's in/out vote. In a critical report, the committee criticised the "reactive and opaque" handling of the renegotiation and warned "presenting Parliament with ...

Turkey says its patience with Russia has a limit

Turkey's foreign minister said Ankara's patience with Russia "has a limit" after Moscow's "exaggerated" reaction to a weekend naval incident between the two countries, an Italian newspaper reported on Monday. A Russian warship fired warning shots at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean Sea on Sunday to avoid a collision and summoned the Turkish military attache in Moscow over the incident. "Ours was only a fishing boat. It seems to me that the reaction of the Russian naval ship was exaggerated," Mevlut Cavusoglu told the Italian daily Corriere della Sera in an interview. The incident is likely to heighten tensions between the two nations, which are at odds over Syria and Turkey's downing of a Russian fighter jet last month. "Russia and Turkey certainly have to re-establish the r...

British Astronaut Tim Peake Blasts Into Space

He took off in the Soyuz FG rocket at 11.03am UK time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan along with his two colleagues – Russian commander Yuri Malenchenko and NASA astronaut Tim Kopra. He looked at the on-board video camera and gave a thumbs up gesture as the spacecraft completed its first booster stage and the boosters fell away. Zero gravity was reached by the Soyuz spacecraft after nine minutes of travel. The gravity indicator inside the capsule could be seen floating away in the on-board footage. It followed an emotional farewell with his family and friends, during which his young son cried loudly, saying: "I want to go with dadd...

Security flaws of contactless cards: How a time saving masterstroke can be exploited by criminals

Contactless cards offer a quick and easy way to pay in shops and restaurants, but could also offer easy pickings to fraudsters if not properly protected. A reader discovered this to his cost when his card seemed to go on a shopping spree without him - and, no, it wasn’t his wife. Desmond, from Wolverhampton, wrote to me after a cash machine displayed an “insufficient funds” message when he tried to withdraw some money. He knew this couldn’t be right as he had been paid just a few days before. So he contacted his bank which confirmed that there had been 13 transactions over the past three days totalling £2,125. Each transaction was an online purchase with his debit card, but Desmond had not made any of them himself. Desmond was not the only victim, by coincidence he discove...

HC questions legality of gas, power price hike

The High Court today questioned the legality of the government’s latest decision to hike gas and electricity prices. In response to a writ petition, the HC issued a rule upon the Energy Regulatory Commission to explain why the decision to hike the prices of gas and electricity would not be declared illegal. In the rule, the court also asked the commission to explain why it should not be directed to reconsider the price hike decision. The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam came up with the rule after hearing the writ petition filed by Consumers Association of Bangladesh. BANGLADESH RAISES POWER AND GAS PRICES FROM SEPTEMBER The organisation submitted the petition in September challenging the legality of the decision taken by Energy Regulatory C...
