Man Sucked Into Jet Engine After Mishap

A man working for Air India has died after being sucked into a jet engine after a "mishap". The freak accident happened as the plane pushed back for take-off at Mumbai airport, the airline said. It reportedly happened after the co-pilot of flight Al 619 to the southern city of Hyderabad mistook a signal from ground staff and started the engine. Maintenance man Ravi Subramanian, who was standing close by, was sucked into the engine and died instantly. India's national carrier said on Twitter that he had "died in a mishap during pushback of flight AI 619". Saudi Arabia is about to behead a teenage boy for attending a protest aged 15

Saudi Arabia is believed to be on the brink of executing a teenage boy who was arrested at the age of 15 for attending a protest. Campaign group Reprieve told The Independent Abdullah al-Zaher, who is now 19, was the youngest in a group of juvenile offenders put on death row as part of a ruthless crackdown on political dissent in the conservative kingdom. Previously held alongside fellow juvenile offender Ali al-Nimr, whose case sparked outrage around the world, Abdullah has now been moved to solitary confinement at a new facility and could be beheaded at any moment. In a last-ditch attempt to save their son’s life – and in spite of the danger of repercussions from the Saudi authorities – Abdullah’s parents have gone public with his story. Speaking to the Guardian, his fat...

Government accused of cover up as data suggests million EU migrants unaccounted for in Britain

David Cameron has been accused of a "migration cover-up" after it emerged that more than a million migrants who have come to the UK in recent years are unaccounted for. Ministers have failed to release data which experts believe could show the true number of EU migrants coming to the UK, claiming that it would be "unhelpful" to Mr Cameron's current renegotiation with Brussels ahead of the in-out referendum. There were accusations that the figures are being suppressed amid fears that releasing the data could lead to Britain leaving the EU. Experts warned that it could mean the number of migrants coming to Britain from the EU is actually hundreds of thousands higher than previously thought. It came as Mr Cameron was left isolated as more than a dozen European leaders spoke o...

Beijing smog is so bad people are buying cans of air imported from Canada

Morning commuters wear protective masks to shield from extreme smog in central Beijing It’s an especially bad time to depend on a nose, mouth, and lungs for breathing if you’re in Beijing. While few can afford the pleasures of a leisurely mountain escape in nearby Zhangjiakou, a whiff of Banff is within reach! “Red alert” smog levels hit China’s capital city earlier this month—the highest alert issued since the color-coded system debuted in 2013. As a result, some residents are taking the desperate measure of buying clean air from a can. For Troy Paquette and Moses Lam, it’s a very good time to be in the business of selling an invisible element. After successfully selling sealed plastic bags of air on eBay (the first for 99 cents, the second for $168 after a bidding war), ...

THE UN’S SILENCE

Mozammel H. Khan: Despite history's numerous precedents, the word “genocide” did not exist until legal scholar Raphael Lemkin, a Polish Jew who found shelter in the United States, coined the term in 1943. On December 9, 1948, the UN unanimously adopted a convention on genocide, identifying it as a crime “committed with the intention to destroy in whole or part a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” Called The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, it was adopted by the General Assembly on December 9, 1948, and came into effect on January 12, 1951. The word “genocide” that gradually entered the lexicon of international law has been used to officially character-ise the mass slaughter of Armenians, Jews and Rwandans in the 20th century. The UN recogni...

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO DEFEND YOUR MOTHERLAND?

Ishtiaq Ahmed: It's the middle of September, 1971. The location is Shonir Char, an inconspicuous fictional village under Barisal District, Sector 9 of independent Bangladesh. But Shonir Char is of great strategic importance to both the nefari-ous Pakistani Army, who are currently occupying it by force, and the Freedom Fighters who want to secure this crucial outpost. Surrounded by Madhumati River, the village has suddenly become critical because of the recent emerging char (river islets). The Pakistanis have also set up a watch-tower which gives them visibility of any enemy approaching their stronghold. At the break of midnight, a group of five Freedom Fighter commandos approach Shonir Char by first swimming through the dark waters of Madhumati and then crawling on the sand dunes of the bu...

57 small things you can do every day to be happier and more successful

I've already posted most of the advice below but scattered among five or six posts. I thought it would be useful to collect all of my happiness and success rules in a single place. Enjoy! 1. Assume people have good intentions. Since you can't read minds, you don't really know the "why" behind the "what" that people do. Imputing evil motives to other people's weird behaviours adds extra misery to life, while assuming good intentions leaves you open to reconciliation. 2. Avoid using negative words. Stop using negative phrases...such as "I can't," "It's impossible," or "This won't work." Stop using profanity, too. What comes out of your mouth programs your mind. When you talk trash, you're transforming your brain into trash. 3. Avoid spending time with stressed-out people...

Council tenants to lose lifetime occupation rights

Future council tenants in England are likely to lose the right to stay in their homes for life, the government has said. An amendment to the Housing Bill, currently going through Parliament, will limit occupation rights for new tenancies to five years at the most. Labour said the move would break up communities. But the government said it would improve the ability of councils to give homes to those who need them most. Up to now, most council tenants have been allowed to remain in their homes for as long as they wanted. In some cases, tenants can even pass their properties to a next of kin. "People will be astonished that ministers are legislating to deny families a stable home," said John Healey, Labour's housing spokesman. "This will cause worry and upheaval for tenants, ...
