Jeremy Corbyn warns rebels: I’m not going anywhere over Syria

Jeremy Corbyn has warned plotters against his leadership that he is “not going anywhere” over his opposition to bombing Syria, as he urged MPs to listen to Labour members. The Labour leader is facing a rebellion among shadow cabinet ministers, with the shadow foreign secretary, Hilary Benn, and the deputy leader, Tom Watson, among those in favour of extending airstrikes against Isis. However, Corbyn asserted his authority on Sunday by reminding MPs of his large mandate and making clear that he alone would decide whether to whip them to vote against extending airstrikes on Isis. He has also consulted members about their views on whether David Cameron has made the case for bombing the Isis stronghold of Raqqa and received 70,000 responses through an online form. Speaking to ...

UK could be prosecuted for war crimes over missiles sold to Saudi Arabia that were used to kill civilians in Yemen

Britain is at risk of being prosecuted for war crimes because of growing evidence that missiles sold to Saudi Arabia have been used against civilian targets in Yemen’s brutal civil war, Foreign Office lawyers and diplomats have warned. Advisers to Philip Hammond, the Foreign Secretary, have stepped up legal warnings that the sale of specialist missiles to the Saudis, deployed throughout nine months of almost daily bombing raids in west Yemen against Houthi rebels, may breach international humanitarian law. Since March this year, bombing raids and a blockade of ports imposed by the Saudi-led coalition of Sunni Gulf states have crippled much of Yemen. Although the political aim is to dislodge Houthi Shia rebels and restore the exiled President, Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi, thous...

Cyber crimes: Govt to write to Facebook for deal

The government will write a letter to Facebook authorities tomorrow to strike a deal with it to be able to get in-formation about its users to ensure cyber security in Bangladesh. “I will write the letter as per our plan to strike the deal with Facebook,” Tarana Halim, state minister for posts and telecommunications, told reporters at The Daily Star centre today. The government is taking the initiative as the country becomes vulnerable to cyber attacks, especially through the use of Facebook, ministry sources said. Facebook showed their interest to sign the deal with Bangladesh government in 2006 on the condition that the networking site will not take responsibility for the users' posts. Tarana on November 17 informed reporters that the ruling Awami League-led government i...

The mystery of the £2m found in a safe which nobody wants to claim

Mayfair’s status as the most valuable property on the Monopoly board is well deserved. Its red-brick townhouses, apartment buildings and private casinos are among the world’s most exclusive. But the central London district also has its seedier side. The lanes and alleyways around Shepherd Market host a plethora of private detective agencies and tax firms catering for the billionaire international local traffic. Not to mention a fair sprinkling of brothels. For many years, also catering for the wealthy set, in a tall office building on nearby Park Street was a business housing safe deposit boxes. Here, in return for a copy of your passport and £1,500 a year, you could hire a lockable 72cm square box, no questions asked, to store whatever took your fancy. In the boom times b...

What’s the craic lads: Read this Irishman’s brilliant Facebook letter to ISIS

An Irishman has penned a hilarious 'open letter' to ISIS following a spate of recent terror attacks in Paris, Egypt and Lebanon. 'Finchie Cova' wrote an 800+ word missive to the terrorists yesterday, asking them how they were and noting the chilling video they sent out this week branding Ireland as 'Europe's weakest link'. He tells them we're only here for the craic and warns them not to blow up famous chipper Leo Burdocks - but attacking Leitrim is fine. Plus, hitting pubs is well out of the question. He concludes by giving Da'esh 10 top tips before signing off. Posted on Thursday at 1.28pm, it has since been shared over 12,000 times and was shared 10,000 times in less than 24 hours. The letter, in full, reads: So after the past few weeks of s***e that's been floating aro...

UK growth hit by biggest drag from net trade on record

Trade continues to drag on UK growth as consumer spending drives Britain's recovery. Britain's recovery slowed in the third quarter as growth was dampened by the biggest drag from net trade on record, official figures showed on Friday. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the UK economy expanded by 0.5pc in the three months to September. This was unchanged from its previous estimate and follows an expansion of 0.7pc in the second quarter. The figures showed Britain's trade deficit almost doubled in the third quarter, to £14.2bn, reflecting a jump in imports, which rose by 5.5pc over the period compared with a 2.7pc fall in the second quarter. This drag from trade was enough to knock 1.5 percentage points off growth in the third quarter, the ONS said, though the de...

Travel chaos as Heathrow protesters blockade tunnel leading to airport

Five people have been arrested after anti-airport expansion activists blockaded a tunnel leading to Heathrow. The protest, held on the day Parliament is due to debate airport expansion in the UK, has left long tailbacks to terminals 1,2 and 3. Campaign group Plane Stupid, which is fighting proposals for a new third runway at Heathrow, claimed responsibility. Three members of the group parked a van bearing David Cameron's election promise "No Ifs, No Buts: No Third Runway" across both lanes of the entrance tunnel. In a press release posted on the group's website, Plane Stupid spokeswoman Cameron Kaye said: "Airport expansion would wreck the legally binding Climate Change Act, risking wiping out 55 per cent of species this century and displacing 75 million more people from t...

Tunisia declares state of emergency after deadly bus blast

Tunisia's President Beji Caid Essebsi declared a nationwide state of emergency and a curfew in the capital after a bomb attack on a presidential guard bus killed at least 12 people. A security source at the site said "most of the agents who were on the bus are dead" after the attack in Tunis, which has become a target of jihadist violence since the 2011 revolution. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, which a ministry official said also wounded 20 people when it went off on Mohamed V Avenue, just as this year's 26th Carthage Film Festival was in full swing. Essebsi, who cancelled a trip to Switzerland for Wednesday, declared a state of emergency throughout the country and a curfew in the capital. "As a result of this painful event, this great traged...

A British Muslim women Caught on Camera when encouraging to join Isis in Syria

A group of British Muslim women have been filmed urging other women and children to support and join Isis, a 12-month undercover investigation has revealed. The women, identified after their pro-Isis activity on social media, were caught on camera lecturing women against western values, declaring them anti-Islamic, urging women to join Isis in Syria and using racially abusive language to describe “filthy Jews” and Israelis. Umm Saalihah and Umm L, the names they go by on Twitter, were filmed by giving two-hour lectures in London in secret closed women-only meetings in community centres, as Channel 4 slowly gained access to them over the course of months. The women appear to have all belonged to extremist group once known as al-Muhajiroun, set up two decades ago and banned ...

One Of Downed Russian Jet’s Pilots Escaped

One of the pilots of the Russian jet that was shot down by Turkey survived and is thought to be on his way back to his base, a diplomat has said. Russia's ambassador to France said the pilot - one of two in the jet brought down on Tuesday near the border with Syria - was picked up by the Syrian army. Alexandre Orlov told Europe 1 radio: "One on board was wounded when he parachuted down and killed in a savage way on the ground by the jihadists in the area and the other managed to escape and, according to the latest information, has been picked up by the Syrian army and should be taken to the Russian airforce base." A Turkish official claimed the two pilots are still alive and the country is working to secure their release from Syrian rebels. According to a US official, the ...
