13 signs that you’re underpaid

Feeling like you might be underpaid can be one of the most disheartening aspects of work. "It stands to reason, because for many, compensation is a concrete litmus test of how well you're performing and progressing on the job — and how highly you're valued," says Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job." According to a 2014 survey from Glassdoor.com, a whopping 39% of employees believed that they were not receiving fair pay in their current job. But it's hard for them to be sure. "The topic of employees' salaries is well guarded by most companies, so it's not always easy to figure out how your pay compares to your colleagues'," says Taylor. "If you're willing t...

Police investigate reports of fat shaming cards on London tube

Police have launched an investigation into the distribution of abusive cards on the London Underground purporting to be from a group calling itself Overweight Haters Ltd. A number of people have reported seeing passengers being handed the cards, said to come from an organisation that “hates and resents fat people”. A Twitter user named Kara Florish posted a picture of one of the cards, which she said she had been given on the tube, describing it as “hateful and cowardly”. British Transport police used Twitter to say that it was aware of the leaflets and urge anyone who had been handed one to contact them. Another person reported seeing a young man get on a train at Oxford Circus and hand one of the printed cards to a woman, telling her: “You’re fat.” He added that the man ...

MPs to call for sugar tax and tighter controls on junk food ads

MPs want a sugar tax on soft drinks and a restriction on TV junk food adverts to fight childhood obesity. The Commons Health Committee said there must be “broader and deeper controls on advertising and marketing to children”. It said: “A way would be to restrict all advertising of high fat, salt and sugar foods and drinks to after the 9pm watershed.” And it also demands a clamp on deals for unhealthy foods and a ban on sweets at the end of aisles and by check-outs. Fizzy drinks should state how many spoons of sugar they contain while use of cartoon characters and stars in children’s advertising “should be restricted.” MPs also want new guidelines on what constitutes a healthy school packed lunch. Can the Mayor Anisul resovled it and kill the dragon

Mayor Annisul Huq had his first bitter taste of what lies ahead if he really wants to go about his promises with sincerity. His mission virtually failed when he went to supervise the clearing of the Tejgaon road where trucks are parked illegally, blocking the important connecting pathway. It also proved a lot of things – how rowdy and ill-disciplined our transport sector is, how political patronage can lead to creation of monsters, how weak our institutions have become because of politicization, how helpless the Dhaka city dwellers are and lot more. Annisul, who seems to be more energetic than any other mayors that we had, who sounds more affirmative and who seems to really want a change in Dhaka, looked overwhelmed by the muscle power of the transport workers. In the end ...

Isis poster girl was chained to a radiator by her mother to stop her joining jihadists in Syria

A mother has told of her despair at watching her daughter turn into an Islamic extremist, saying she even chained her to the radiator in their home to stop her fleeing to join Isis in Syria. Shakhla Bochkaryova, 41, from a small town near Surgut in Russia, told The Siberian Times how she had come to accept that she gave birth to a “monster” after her 20-year-old daughter, Fatima Dzhafarova, became radicalised and ran away. An intelligent girl who always took pride in her appearance, Fatima had just started studying at university when her Ms Bochkaryova – who comes from a Muslim family – noticed her changing.     Saudi women running for public office next month for the first time ever begin campaigning Sunday in another step forward for women's rights in the conservative kingdom's slow democratic pro-cess. Around 900 women are standing in the December 12 municipal elections, which will also be the first time females have been allowed to participate in choosing officials. "This is one of the first steps for women's rights, a big step for us," said Sahar Hassan Nasief, an activist in the Red Sea city of Jeddah who has many friends running for office. The election will be the third municipal ballot for men, who previously voted in 2005 and 2011. The absolute monarchy, which applies a strict interpretation of Islam, has no female cabinet ministers and is the only country in the world w...
