No atmosphere to enjoy Eid: says Khaleda

Greeting the country’s people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, BNP chairperson Khaleda feared that people are unlikely to be able to properly enjoy the festival due to the ‘prevailing anarchic situation’ in the country, reports UNB. In a message marking the Eid, she said, “An alarming anarchic situation has been prevailing in the country as there’s no security of people and their property. Under the circum-stances, it won’t be possible for all to enjoy the Eid properly.” The BNP chief observed that the poor and low-income people have been going through immense suffer-ings for unbridled price hike. She urged the country’s well-off section of society to extend their helping hands and sympathy to the poor and destitute. “We all should be careful so that no one remains unfed on ...

Britain’s oldest family business RJ Balson running since Tudor days

Each year about 240,000 British businesses collapse. To survive beyond the first couple of years is an achievement; to celebrate 50 years trading is remarkable. But for a shopkeeper to be able to mark a 500th anniversary is worthy of great celebration which is precisely what Richard Balson did last weekend. RJ Balson & Sons, the butcher’s shop he owns in the pretty market town of Bridport, Dorset, has survived the Reformation, the English Civil War, the start of the Industrial Revolution, the end of horsepower, the rise of the internet and more recessions than you can shake a black pudding at. And all the while it’s remained within the same family, so that experts have now declared it the oldest family company in Britain. “It’s unbelievable,” he agrees, in a Dorse...

Indian restaurant writes white ppl on customer’s receipt after he orders mild curry

An Indian restaurant in west London has apologised to a customer for marking his receipt with the words “white ppl” after he requested a mild curry. Valentine Restaurant in Southall said the mix-up was a misunderstanding rather than a comment on the race of the customer, because “ppl” was its shorthand for “milk”. The note, added underneath the order of a venison curry, read ***VERY MILD, WHITE PPL***. Restaurant owner Ruby Kandasamy said that it was a reminder for the kitchen to use “a white sauce made from milk, single cream, coconut milk and spices we add to our dishes when a curry is requested mild”. But the customer, 44-year-old Stuart Lynn, said he was offended by the note and that he wouldn’t be using the restaurant again. @arreyaar to be fair ppl made me think of p...

First self injectable contraceptive for women available for use in UK

The long-acting reversible contraceptive, Sayana Press, has received a licence which means women can inject themselves at home instead of having to go to their GP surgery or clinic. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has extended the label for the product. Each jab provides contraception for at least 13 weeks. Women will need to see a healthcare professional for training but then can administer Sayana at home, although they will still be called for yearly check-ups. Seema Patel, medical director of global established pharma UK at Pfizer, said: "When it comes to contraception, women may require different options that suit them at different times in their lives. Man’s decomposing body found ‘tied to a supermarket trolley’ in London canal

Detectives at Scotland Yard launched a murder investigation after the discovery was made on Wednesday morning and have not yet formally identified the victim. The man’s body was spotted in the water by a member of the public near the entrance to the Islington Tunnel, by a houseboat-lined towpath popular with local residents, dog walkers and joggers. Police were last night searching the banks as divers combed the bed of the canal for evidence. A houseboat owner told the Evening Standardofficers asked him whether he had heard a shopping trolley pass by along the towpath. “I’d gone to sleep at 11pm after being at the pub to watch the rugby and woke with the police banging on my window, he added. “That’s when I found out the body had been found in a trolley. HMRC flexes new powers on contract and freelance workers in £5.5bn raid

Thousands of contractors and freelancers have become ensnared in a £5.5bn tax grab – aimed initially at wealthy tax dodgers – that allows HM Revenue & Customs to demand backdated taxes to be paid, in full, within a three-month deadline. The allegedly underpaid tax can relate to periods of employment from many years ago. HMRC was handed the powers last year to force wealthy investors accused of using “aggressive tax avoidance” schemes to pay their potential tax liabilities up front, instead of having to chase them through the courts. Previously, HMRC was forced to pursue its missing billions in costly court battles, prompting the Government to approve the legislation in 2014. Millionaire businesspeople and Premier League footballers are now facing tax demands of up to £...
