The fear and insecurity behind Putin’s bizarre new workout video

On Sunday, the Kremlin released a strange, awkward video of Russian President Vladimir Putin working out with Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev. The camera follows the two men silently lifting weights in a sun-dappled pavilion at the Bocharov Ruchei government residence in Sochi, going from exercise to exercise on the kind of self-balancing weight machines that your CrossFit-obsessed friends are always making fun of. The decision to release footage of the most powerful man in Russia frowning through a set of calf raises in unflattering sweatpants might seem, to a casual observer, odd. But this is all part of the long-running and quite carefully scripted Putin Adventure public affairs strategy. It follows years of other photo ops and staged videos that are basically official P...

Saudi firms stop hiring costly domestics from Bangladesh

Recruitment offices here have decided to stop hiring Bangladeshi workers because they claim that a supply crunch has raised costs. Ibrahim Al-Megheimish, a recruitment expert, said that there are too few Bangladeshi workers seeking employment, which now means costs have risen from $1,000 (SR3,751) to $1,800 (SR6,752) just to bring them here, a local publication reported recently, reports Arab news. He said the cost of SR7,000 outlined by the Saudi Ministry of Labor is not enough to cover all the expenses incurred in bringing workers to the country. This has also been the complaint of other recruitment office owners, who said costs have risen 80 percent. Al-Megheimish said he was surprised that the ministry announced the recruitment costs in American dollars. He said the mi...

Mayor Candidate Jeremy Corbyn under fire over tragedy of Osama bin Laden killing

Jeremy Corbyn under fire over 'tragedy' of Osama bin Laden killing Jeremy Corbyn has come under fire for saying it was a "tragedy" that Osama bin Laden was killed by the United States rather than being put on trial. The Labour leadership frontrunner made the remarks shortly after the 2012 special forces raid on the al Qaida chief's Pakistan compound in which he and four others were shot dead. In an interview for Iranian television, he suggested the assassination of the September 11 attacks' mastermind would result in deeper unrest. It is the latest in a series of past comments and associations that the veteran left-winger has been forced to defend since emerging as the surprise favourite to succeed Ed Miliband. In a clip from the Press TV show The Agenda, Mr Corbyn is hear...

He said that under the arrangement the Falklands could retain their British nationality while a joint administration is put in place. The comments were severely criticised by Mr Weston, who suffered 46 per cent burns after the RFA Sir Galahad was bombed during the 1982 conflict. Mr Weston said: "It is a repugnant idea. I don't see why it should happen given...

Mother And Four Children May Be Going To Syria

Police are hunting for a missing mother and her four children who are feared to be travelling to Syria, Scotland Yard said. The woman and her children - aged four to 12 - are believed to have left the country on Tuesday via London City Airport on a flight to Amsterdam. The woman, 33-year-old Zahera Tariq, was last seen earlier that day at her home in Waltham and has not been heard from since. A family member alerted police on Wednesday. Commander Richard Walton, from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, said he was concerned for Ms Tariq and her children. "Whilst we do have some concerns that Zahera may be thinking of travelling to Syria, there is no current information to suggest that she's already travelled there," he said. The family left for Amsterdam and might be trav...

Night Tube service launch suspended amid threat of further strikes on London Underground

The introduction of an all-night service on the London Underground has been suspended amid the threat of further strike action by workers. London Underground said that plans to launch the weekend Night Tube service on 12 September had been "deferred". It had previously been reported that officials were considering delaying the launch after it was met with staunch opposition by members of staff. Three rail unions staged walkouts in July and August, and planned to strike again in the coming weeks. LU officials had previously said that the service would not be launched "at any cost", but Transport for London had confirmed as recently as this week that it was still committed to the 12 September date. Speaking to PA, LU said it wanted to allow more time for talks with unions to...

Gunman: I’m Surprised I Didn’t Do This Before

A man who shot dead two former colleagues on live television wrote a rambling 23-page suicide note and manifesto in which said he was "surprised I didn't 'do this' before now". According to ABC News, a man claiming to be Bryce Williams had called repeatedly asking for the station's fax number which was later used hours after the shooting in Smith Mountain Lake, Moneta, to send the document. In it, Vester Lee Flanagan - who used Bryce Williams on screen - described being the victim of racial discrimination and said the fatal shooting of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, "sent me over the top". He also claims the initials of the Charleston victims were on the bullets he used to kill reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, and expresses ad...

French rail worker paid £3,500 to do absolutely nothing for 12 years files complaint

An employee of France’s national rail operator SNCF has revealed being paid €5,000 (£3,550) per month to do absolutely "nothing" for 12 years, it emerged on Friday. However, rather than being delighted with the situation, he has filed a complaint for "compensation", saying the sinecure put the brakes on his promising career. Charles Simon told French media that his employer, which runs France’s trains including the fast TGVs, took him off his day job in 2003 after he blew the whistle on a case of suspected fraud to the tune of €20 million. Since then he has received €5,000 per month net while staying at home with the status "available" for work. “Each month I receive a new salary statement and a bank transfer. Last month, just like every year in June, I also received a bon...
