Nation paying deep homage to Bangabandhu

To mark the day, the government, ruling Awami League (AL), its front and associate bodies, different socio-cultural, political and professional bodies held elaborate programmes. On this day in 1975, the Father of the Nation along with most of his family members was assas-sinated by a section of disgruntled and ambitious army personnel. His two daughters - Sheikh Hasina, now prime minister, and Sheikh Rehana-escaped the bloodbath as they were abroad. The day was a public holiday. According to a Yazidi teenager who was held with 26-year-old Ms Mueller, al Baghdadi took the American as his "wife", repeatedly forcing her to have sex when he visited. Mueller family spokeswoman Emily Lenzner told the Associated Press news agency the 14-year-old Yazidi girl, who later escaped, spoke to US officials. End airport shopping rip-off with new laws: ministers told

Heathrow shops decline customers who refuse to show boarding passes Shops should be forced by law to reduce their prices in airports, the retail watchdog has said, as it urged ministers to pass new legislation to end the VAT rip-off. Boots, WH Smith and other stores claim millions in VAT discounts on items sold to passengers travelling outside the EU, but many fail to pass on the 20 per cent saving to customers. The rip-off has drawn criticism from the Government, but Dean Dunham, the retail ombudsman, said nothing would change without further action. "We don't have any powers to make retailers adhere because [passing on the VAT relief] is not law," the head of the dispute arbiter told BBC Radio 4. "The Government needs to make this a law [and] say to the retailers in airp...

Doctors worry as Government dithers on 7 day NHS

Veteran health campaigner Myra Garrett joins Mayor Lutfur Rahman and Councillors Abjol Miah and Oli Rahman on last year's "Save our Surgeries" demonstration. One of the talking points in this year’s General Election were previously released figures which showed that death rates were higher in hospitals at the weekend than during the week. This difference could be explained by clinical factors. Hospital populations are smaller at the weekend, as routine and minor operations are not scheduled then and patients who came in on a planned basis earlier in the week are sent home. This means that very ill patients and patients admitted to A&E and pass away at the weekend represent a high percentage of the hospital population on Saturdays and Sundays than on other days. Anot...

The TUC analysis follows studies suggesting a link between night-time working and increased likelihood of suffering such conditions as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression. It called for late-night staff to be given extra rights to protect them from exploitation which could harm their mental and physical health. The report wa...

UK drivers do not know the correct speed limit

More than a third of drivers do not know what the speed limit is on roads, a new study has revealed. A survey of 2,000 UK drivers by the Co-operative Insurance found that 36% could not say what the national limit was on a dual carriageway, while one in eight gave the wrong answer for motorways (70mph for both). A handful of those questioned thought the limit on dual carriageways was 80mph instead of 70mph. Younger drivers were more likely to give the correct answer, while motorists in London had the least awareness of speed limits. Steve Kerrigan of the Co-operative Insurance, said: "These figures show that all too often drivers are getting into their cars and driving with no real awareness of the speed limits in place. "It is interesting that younger drivers - who a...
