Arrest warrant issued against Latif Siddique

News Desk: A Dhaka court today issued arrest warrant against sacked minister Abdul Latif Siddique for failing to respond to its summons in  a case filed for hurting Muslims' religious sentiments. The court order asking Siddique, now in Indian city of Kolkata, to appear before the court today was returned from both of the sacked minister’s addresses in Dhaka and Tangail. The court considers return of the order as “not served” as the accused former minister was not present at the addresses to acknowledge receipt, our court correspondent reported. Latif on September 28 said that he was against hajj and Tabligh Jamaat more than he was against the party Jamaat-e-Islami. He also said Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) made arrangement of hajj to “generate income”. A lawyer of Dhaka Bar association, Adv...

BD Govt will reclaim privatised jute mills

News Desk: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today spoke of reclaiming the privatised jute mills and factories in order to rejuvenate the glory of Bangladesh’s golden fibre. “We will resume production in those mills and factories privatised in the past,” she said while visiting the Ministry of Textiles and Jute at the Secretariat. “We need to expand our market, create new ones and boost production,” she added. “Some state-run jute factories were handed over to the private sector in the past. Retailers urge US to cut tariff on apparel imports

Refayet Ullah Mirdha: Leading retailers and brands in the US want their government to reduce import tariff on apparel and fashion accessories, according to a recent survey by US Fashion Industry Association. The survey was conducted among 29 retailers and brands of which 85 percent called for abandoning rules of origin meant for apparel items. If the US government cuts import tariff on apparel and fashion accessories, Bangladesh will be benefitted as the country now pays a huge amount of customs duty to the US. “Respondents report very low utilisation rates of current FTAs (free trade agreements) and preference programmes, suggesting that current rules do not work for the industry,” the survey report said. Bangladesh has long been negotiating with the US for duty-free access of its garm...

How should a government minister behave?

Ashfaqur Rahman: Mr. Latif Siddique we are told is a habitual abuser of his authority. He is also foul-mouthed and quite abusive in his behaviour towards his officers and colleagues. In spite of numerous press reports about his conduct, the government of the day must have found some reason to retain him in his cabinet post. In fact, he was quite a senior minister and in cabinet meetings we noticed him sitting close to the prime minister. It must have surprised many government insiders as to how he acquired this position of confidence in spite of his known misdemeanours. The prime minister herself may have been surprised to hear what the minister said in a Tangail Samity meeting in New York. He had accompanied the prime minister to New York as part of her delegation to this year's UN Gene...
