China’s debt levels pose stability risk: says IMF

Fears that China risks being the cause of a fresh global financial crisis have been highlighted by the International Monetary Fund in a hard-hitting warning about the growing debt-dependency of the world’s second biggest economy. The IMF’s health check of China’s financial system found that credit was high by international levels, that personal debt had increased in the past five years, and that the pressure to maintain the country’s rapid growth had bred an unwillingness to let struggling firms fail. While praising China’s president, Xi Jinping, for his commitment to improving financial security, the IMF said reforms by Beijing in recent years had not gone far enough. The system’s increasing complexity has sown financial stability risks, the IMF’s assessment said. “Credit...

Main points of agreement between UK and EU in Brexit deal

The agreement between UK and EU in Brexit deal required give and take on both sides, says May. The deal has been confirmed as follows: EU citizens • EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the rest of the EU have the right to stay. Rights of their children and those of partners in existing “durable relationships” are also guaranteed. • UK courts will preside over enforcing rights over EU citizens in Britain but can refer unclear cases to the European court of justice for eight years after withdrawal. Irish border • The agreement promises to ensure there will be no hard border and to uphold the Belfast agreement. • It makes clear the whole of the UK, including Northern Ireland, will be leaving the customs union. • It leaves unclear how an open border will be achieved but s...

Gove and Johnson congratulate May on Brexit deal

Michael Gove says any Brexit supporter should be delighted the UK will be free from the ECJ, single market and customs union. Michael Gove and Boris Johnson led senior Brexit supporters in congratulating Theresa May for securing a deal to withdraw the UK from the EU that promises to guarantee the rights of citizens and prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland. The environment secretary, who led the Vote Leave campaign, claimed Theresa May had won and hailed it as a significant personal achievement. Johnson, who had warned the agreement must work for the whole of the UK, including Northern Ireland, added his warm words soon afterwards, saying: Congratulations to PM for her determination in getting today’s deal. We now aim to forge a deep and special partnership with o...

May made 3 big concessions to the EU on Brexit deal

Prime Minister Theresa May has agreed the text of a Brexit divorce deal after holding all night talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the DUP, and the Irish government. May travelled to Brussels on Friday morning with Brexit secretary David Davis to Brussels for talks with the European Commission, before the deal was finalised and published by the EU. Getting to this point has required give and take on both sides, May told the world media this morning. I very much welcome the prospect of moving ahead to the next phase to talk about trade and security and to discuss the positive and ambitious future relationship that is in all of our interests. The wording of the deal shows that the British side had to make concessions on a number of key issues in or...

The stealth tax that will leave Britain’s savers £100 million worse off

Interest rates may be up for the first time in a decade, but millions of Brits are about to take a hit elsewhere, as a 'stealth tax' on savers kicks in. And the change is set to cost people saving for their future at least £100 million a year, the Chancellor has said. In his Autumn Budget, Philip Hammond announced plans to freeze the so-called indexation allowance an inflation-linked tax break from January 2018, to raise £525 million for the government by 2023. This means people with money in investment products such as endowments and whole of life insurance policies will be taxed on the full amount added to their pot each year rather than just the amount above the inflation rate. On Wednesday the Chancellor said the move will cost Brits at least £100 million a year - addi...

This woman’s yoga fail is going viral

Chisa Tolbertson, a 22-year-old musician from Denver, posted the video of her yoga fail on Twitter back in May, For better or worse, the world of yoga has gotten increasingly more epic. While we used to just have vinyasa, or hot yoga, or aerial yoga if you were really adventurous, yoga goers nowadays are attending goat yoga, and naked yoga, and even drunk yoga. The main goal behind all of these themed-yoga classes is clear: they're doing it for the 'gram. It may have been the same goal that landed one woman literally in (probably cold) water when she attempted to do a fancy yoga pose on a log over a river earlier this year. Instead of a perfectly posed photo, Chisa Tolbertson, a 22-year-old musician from Denver, posted the video of her yoga fail on Twitter back in May, but...

Automatic rate reduction for thousands of businesses will boost Tower Hamlets’ economy

Thousands of small to medium sized businesses are set to see an automatic reduction in their business rate bills this year, under exceptional council plans to boost the borough's economy. Cabinet's decision to agree the Business Rates Relief scheme will automatically put more than £8 million back into the coffers of local business rate payers over the next four years. Business rates are a tax on properties such as shops, factories and offices that are not used for domestic purposes. In March this year, the government announced a £300 million fund to support businesses facing the steepest increase in their business rates, as a result of revaluation - an estimate of what the property could be let for on the open market. Tower Hamlets has been allocated £8.184 million over four years - th...

Theresa May could be gone as leader by Christmas

Allies of Brexit secretary David Davis think Theresa May could be gone as leader by Christmas as her struggles with European Union negotiations continue, it has been reported. Former chief whip Andrew Mitchell is said to be organising drinks evenings with a new generation of Tory MPs and plotting to replace the prime minister with David Davis. Said to be in the frame for top jobs are Tom Tugendhat, James Cleverly and Gillian Keegan who would support Davis to take over the leadership. Davis would then stand aside ahead of the next election in 2022 for one of the high flyers to take over. One ally of Davis told one of the younger Tory MPs: Theresa has the smell of death around her. She'll be gone by Christmas. It's time to rally around DD, (David Davis) the Sun reported. The...
