National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman yesterday accused the influential countries of encouraging Israel in its atrocities in Gaza.
“We find that the big powers raise their voices and issue statements even in a case of trivial human rights violation in Bangladesh. But we are not seeing such statements and worries of those about the ongoing destruction and killing in Gaza,” he said.
“Rather, sometimes they are encouraging and supporting the killings and destruction by some statements,” he told a rally, organised by the commission, at the capital’s Central Shaheed Minar.
The rights commission chief urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to take clear and specific steps against Israel, and called upon the international community to hold it accountable for the mass killings in Gaza and compel it to give compensation to the Palestinian victims.
The Israeli offensive went on for a nearly a month claiming 1,875 Palestinian lives, mostly innocent, before a truce took hold on Tuesday.
Rahman termed Israel a “terrorist” country, and expressed his sympathy to the Palestinians.
People taking part in the rally carried several placards that read “Stop genocide in Gaza”, “Wake up world power,” “Thirsty of blood? Take from us but save the innocent,” and “Do not just talk, take steps”.
Meanwhile, the Khulna city and district units of Jatiya Party (Ershad) protested the Israeli barbarity, by bringing out a procession in the city. They also held a rally in front of the party office in Dakbangla area with JP city president Abul Hossain.
Separately, JP leader Zamal U Ahmed held a human chain at Picture Palace intersection. The protesters urged the Muslim countries to take proper action against the Israeli “genocide” in Gaza.
