Japan and Germany confirm victims did not visit China

Two people from Japan and Germany who had contracted coronavirus had not visited the area in China where the deadly viral outbreak originated, authorities have confirmed. One of the patients was a Japanese tour bus driver in his 60s in the city of Nara who had driven two groups of Chinese tourists who had come from Wuhan earlier this month. He was diagnosed with pneumonia on Saturday and has now been hospitalised. Another man in his 40s who lives in Wuhan and arrived in Japan on 20 January was also confirmed to have contracted the virus, the ministry said. The ministry said it was checking on people who had been in contact with the two new patients. The latest infections bring the total number of confirmed Japanese cases to six. It comes as Germany’s first case o...

Britain under pressure to evacuate UK nationals

Britain’s embassy in Beijing has said it is working to make available an option for British nationals to leave the Chinese province at the centre of the coronavirus as the UK’s response was contrasted with that of other countries with active evacuation plans. The announcement on Monday came as the former foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, backed the idea of airlifts for British citizens in China and Public Health England said the first case of the virus was likely to come from somebody already in the UK. Our view is that, although airports are important, the most likely place that we might find a case is somebody in the country already, and it’s absolutely critical that the public health service and the NHS are ready to diagnose that and are able to designate the perso...

Trade deal will require trade-offs

Britain may have to accept a fish for finance compromise in EU trade talks which would see foreign boats in UK waters in return for few restrictions on the City, Irish premier Leo Varadkar warned today. He stressed there would have to be trade offs if the UK and Brussels are to strike a new trade deal which Boris Johnson has vowed to do by the end of the year. The UK has a very strong position on fisheries, he added, given the size of British waters, with a lot of fish taken out of your waters by boats from other countries, and the bulk sold to mainland Europe. However, he added: An area where you’re in a very weak position is one of the most valuable parts of the British economy which is financial services. And if financial services and entertainment, audio visua...

Meghan’s move to affect citizenship

Meghan Markle could be left without British citizenship after she and Harry announced they are to split their time between North America and the UK. The Duchess has to follow one rule if she wants to become a British citizen - she cannot live out of the country for more than 90 days. Meghan is thought to be in the second year of the five-year process towards naturalisation after her wedding in May 2018. But the Sussexes' move to Canada will take Meghan away from the 'strong commitment to the UK and an intention to live here', a government source said. Meghan must not have left the UK for more than 270 days in the three years before applying for it. This can be spread over the three years but must include 90 days in the last year. Harry must also meet a minimum i...

Queen considered stripping Harry and Meghan of titles

The Queen considered stripping Harry of his royal dukedom as well as his HRH title and allowing him to use only the lesser title of earl, the Evening Standard has been told. As The Duke of Sussex is one of the ancient royal titles, downgrading Harry and Meghan’s rank in line with their reduced level of official duties was discussed, sources said. It is understood the suggestion was that the sixth in line to the throne would have been referred to by one of his lesser titles, the Earl of Dumbarton, with his wife being known as a countess putting them on a par with Prince Edward and Sophie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex. But the Queen and Prince of Wales did not wish to appear petty and felt banning the couple from using HRH in public and for commercial use while st...

Turkish president visits quake scene and denies they were unprepared

The death toll from a strong earthquake that rocked eastern Turkey has climbed to 29 as rescue crews continue the search for people trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. Interior minister Suleyman Soylu said earlier on Saturday that 18 people were killed in Elazig province, where Friday night’s quake was centred, and four in neighbouring Malatya. The national disaster agency later updated the total with seven more casualties. Another 1,243 people were injured, and 34 of them are in intensive care but not in critical condition. On Saturday afternoon, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the hardest-hit areas and attended the funeral of a mother and son killed in the quake. He warned people against repeating “negative” hearsay about the country...

He was found wearing a grey babygrow and hat on Sandringham Road, Hackney, London, at around 11.40am today. Police were called by a passerby who discovered the little infant wrapped up in a white knitted blanket. Lauren Carter Smith's grandfather discovered the newborn. 14 suspected UK coronavirus patients result negative

Tests for coronavirus on 14 people in the UK have come back negative but there are checks ongoing on other people, according to the Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty. The announcement comes after Boris Johnson ordered a meeting of Whitehall’s Cobra emergency committee to respond to the threat. As the infection crisis escalated in China, Professor Paul Cosford, medical director at Public Health England, said it was “highly likely” that the virus would reach the UK. No cases of the deadly virus, which can be fatal, have yet been confirmed in the UK. The Cobra meeting, chaired by Health Secretary Matt Hancock, was called to urgently ensure precautionary measures are in place to deal with the virus if it does spread to Britain. Medical experts were at ever...

Saudi star escapes London jail after animal cruelty claims

A Saudi social media star has been forced to apologise after footage appearing to show a man pulling the wings off of a bird in a London hotel surfaced online. Mansour Al Raqiba, 40, who is known in the kingdom for his Snapchat videos, was reportedly saved from potential prison time after an intervention by the Saudi Arabian embassy in London, following outrage online. Mr Al Raqiba was accused, alongside two associates, of cruelty to animals by social media users after the video was posted to Snapchat and Twitter. The Saudi star later said: “I apologise for this mistake. I thought that the issue would end in paying a fine. But had it not been for the embassy’s stance, the issue would have led to jail.” The video shows one of the three men leaning over a bathtub, p...
