US warned UK to keep a close eye on Khashoggi’s fiancee

US intelligence authorities urged British counterparts to keep a close eye on Hatice Cengiz, the fiancee of the murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, after they became aware of a plan by Saudi Arabia to keep her under surveillance in the UK last year, according to western intelligence sources. The US believed the kingdom had the ambition and intention to monitor Cengiz in London last May, seven months after Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where he had gone to obtain papers so the couple could marry. It is not clear if the intended surveillance of Cengiz was electronic or physical, or if it was successful. However, the revelation that intelligence agencies feared Cengiz was being targeted in this way and that Saudi Arabia was preparing ...

EU threatens UK with sanctions

The EU has warned Boris Johnson of “sanctions” if he fails to implement controversial goods checks in the Irish Sea after Brexit, opening up a fresh potential clash with the UK. Brussels will “not tolerate any backsliding or half measures”, the senior adviser to chief negotiator Michel Barnier said – after the prime minister repeatedly claimed checks would not be necessary. Stefaan De Rynck insisted the inspections were a joint legal agreement, as the price for Britain but not Northern Ireland – breaking free of the single market and customs union. “2020 will not just be about the future relationship, but also about implementing the withdrawal agreement  notably the Northern Irish protocol,” he told an event in London. “We will have to be extremely disciplined to ...

EU deal puts London at risk of rule-taking

The system that would allow British financial firms to access the EU’s markets after Brexit could lead to indirect rule-taking by the UK, a City of London lobby group has warned. Negotiations over the post-Brexit relationship with the EU will require the UK to decide whether it will change its regulatory regime before or after it asks the bloc for so-called equivalence, the International Regulatory Strategy Group (IRSG) argued in its latest report. While seemingly technocratic exercises, decisions concerning equivalence can be politicised or otherwise linked to extraneous factors, the IRSG’s report, to be published on Thursday, reads. Maintaining equivalence with the EU in certain areas could lead to a form of indirect rule-taking by the UK. The calls follow a warn...

Why babies should always sleep on their backs

When you’re a new parent, it can seem like there’s an overwhelming amount of information and advice to remember in order to keep your new baby healthy, safe and happy. But if there’s one piece of information you should always follow, it’s that for every single nap and sleep that you put your baby down for, they should always be placed on their back. Why? Recent research from numerous worldwide studies has shown there is a connection between the sleeping positions of babies and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and the risk is greatly reduced if your baby sleeps on their back. Why is it safer for baby to sleep on its back? Nobody yet knows exactly why it's safer for your baby to sleep on their back rather than their stomach, although there are several well-res...

Brexit Britain a beacon of relative stability

Executives around the world regard the UK as a 'beacon of relative stability' for their businesses. In a major vote of confidence in Brexit Britain, a survey of bosses by PwC found the UK is the fourth most important country for international firms, behind the US, China and Germany. The accountancy firm's report found, for chief executives in Germany, France and Italy, the UK is as attractive now as it was in 2015, with a notable uptick since last year. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Kevin Ellis, chairman of PwC UK, said: 'The findings provide timely perspective on the UK's standing as a place to invest and do business. Viewed against the turbulent global backdrop, the UK is a beacon of relative stability. You can't replicate natural advantages lik...

Gibraltar may join Schengen Area

Gibraltar is considering joining the EU’s Schengen open borders area to limit disruption caused by Brexit, its chief minister has said. Fabian Picardo, the territory’s leader, said it did not “make sense” for Gibraltar to be cut off from the rest of Europe given its location bordering Spain. A decision to join the full Schengen area by the micro-state could mean UK travellers would have to apply for a mini-visa known as ETIAS to visit after Brexit. The EU plans to bring in the so-called European Travel Information and Authorisation System from 2021, which would require non-EU visitors to Schengen countries to fill in forms and pay a small fee to visit. The system is expected to be similar to the US ESTA system that many British travellers are already familiar with...

A 40 stone IS terrorist has been arrested

A 40-stone Islamic State terrorist has been arrested in Iraq by a SWAT team, security officials have said. Abu Abdul Bari, also known as Shifa al-Nima, was taken away on the back of a truck after his arrest in Mosul as the extremist, who weighs an estimated 40-stone (254kg), could not be transported in a car. Pictures of Bari, who Iraqi police consider to be one of IS's senior figures, on the vehicle wedged against a mounted machine gun have appeared online. He is also pictured at home. It is unclear how he was removed from his hiding place. Bari is an IS mufti, or expert in religious law, who issued fatwas that led to the deaths of scholars and clerics who refused to pledge allegiance to the terrorist group when it occupied the city, officials said. During the g...
