UK expects record tourism in 2020

Britain is set to welcome a record number of international tourists in 2020, a new forecast shows. Visit Britain, the national tourism agency, is predicting that the number of overseas visitors to the UK next year will rise to 39.7million - up 2.9 per cent on 2019. It also estimated that spending by these visitors will hit a record £26.6billion next year - a 6.6 per cent increase in spending in 2019, which is expected to top out at £25billion. Meanwhile, data from ForwardKeys, a flight data analysis firm, shows that flight bookings overall to the UK from December 2019 to May 2020 are up five per cent compared to the same period last year. Forward bookings to the UK from China and South Asia are particularly strong, up 33 per cent and 22 per cent respectively. The...

Newly face lifted Big Ben will ring in London New Year

Britain's Big Ben bell in parliament's landmark clock tower will ring at midnight on New Year's Eve, marking the start of a year for the first time since its new face was revealed from under scaffolding halfway through restoration work. The work has seen the 96-metre-tall Elizabeth Tower, one of the most photographed buildings in Britain, enveloped in scaffolding for the last two years as the four clock dials are reglazed, ironwork repainted and intricately carved stonework cleaned and repaired. In March, part of the scaffolding was removed, showing that the clock's once black numerals and hands have been repainted blue, in line with what scientists say was its original colour. Since restoration work began in 2017, Big Ben has been largely silenced, sounding only f...

Officials bent visa rules for Queen

A clampdown on illegal immigration was relaxed because Ministers feared the Queen believed it could affect the polo season, it was claimed last night. The Home Office had planned to close a loophole that granted special visas to hundreds of foreigners working in the so-called 'sport of kings' amid fears it was being used as a backdoor for low-skilled migrants to enter the country. But the proposals were watered down in the wake of Buckingham Palace's considerable interest in the matter, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. One source said the Queen became 'very animated' over the plans, while a former official said Ministers went 'above and beyond' normal practice to address Palace concerns. Whitehall sources told this newspaper the subject was discussed when Queen had ...

My life’s on hold as new man keeps me hidden from ex-wife

Dear Coleen: My life's on hold as new man keeps me hidden from ex-wife I’ve been seeing a guy I’m in love with since June. He’s separated from his wife and they have two children together. My problem is, he doesn’t want his ex or his kids knowing we’re in a relationship because he says she’d make his life a nightmare and he wants to keep her sweet in order to carry on seeing his kids when he wants to. I understand it’s a tricky situation for him, but I hate being this dirty secret and I want us to have a normal relationship. I have met his children a couple of times, but he’s introduced me as “Daddy’s friend from work”. They’re lovely kids and I’d like to be able to build a relationship with them. We’ve been together for six months now and I feel that’s long enou...

Millions of plastic pieces fall on London everyday

Millions of pieces of microplastic are raining down on London each day, a new study suggests. Researchers at King’s College London, analysed the number of particles and fibres falling on to the roof of a nine-storey building in the middle of the capital, on eight separate days. They picked a spot high up to ensure that only microplastic from the atmosphere was collected, rather than pieces being deposited daily at ground level. Tiny pieces of plastic were found in all eight samples, with numbers ranging from 575 to 1,008 per square metre (10.7 square foot) each day. If the same amount was falling across the capital, it suggests millions of pieces of plastic fall on London each day. Previous studies have shown that microplastic can travel great distances in the air...

PM flies economy to Mustique break

The Prime Minister has saved British taxpayers tens of thousands by flying economy class for his Caribbean holiday with girlfriend Carrie Symonds. Boris Johnson touched down in St Lucia on Thursday morning after a long-haul British Airways flight from London. In a photograph taken by a fellow passenger, the Prime Minister can be seen at a window seat reading a book while Ms Symonds snuggles underneath her coat. The pair appear to be seated in economy towards the back of the plane, where passengers can often feel more turbulence than those at the front. A source told MailOnline that the couple kept a 'low profile' for the duration of the flight and were accompanied by 'little security'. The cost of the flight would have cost in the region of £1323 each, significan...

Sneaky ways to lose weight in your sleep

20 Sneaky Ways to Lose Weight In Your Sleep. How many meals did you eat yesterday? However you answered the above question, chances are that you actually ate far more frequently than you recall. The majority of us now pack several mini-meals into our each day, according to a study at The Salk Institute. And the longer we stay up, the more calories we consume. The scientists speculated that the best way to cut down on calorie intake might be simply to get more sleep, so they asked people who ate over the course of 14 hours each day to cut their grazing times to no more than 11 hours a day and to sleep more of the time. After 16 weeks, subjects lost an average of 3.5 percent of their excess body weight just by going to bed earlier. That means that just a few simple...

Teacher wears revealing bodysuit

A teacher in Spain has come up with an inventive way to teach students about anatomy, according to reports. Veronica Duque, 43, donned a bodysuit depicting the inside of a human body to help her year four class "visualise the disposition of internal organs". She arrived at the lesson at Maria Teresa Inigo de Toro school in Valladolid wearing a white coat before removing it to a mixed reaction. There was "confusion, shouts, applause and some covered their eyes", Ms Duque admitted to El Pais. She wanted to make the class more practical, so used the outfit to pique her students' interests before turning to the traditional plastic bust the school uses to teach anatomy. Ms Duque revealed she found the costume by pure chance after seeing an advert online and decided to...
