Doctors worry as Government dithers on 7 day NHS

Veteran health campaigner Myra Garrett joins Mayor Lutfur Rahman and Councillors Abjol Miah and Oli Rahman on last year's "Save our Surgeries" demonstration. One of the talking points in this year’s General Election were previously released figures which showed that death rates were higher in hospitals at the weekend than during the week. This difference could be explained by clinical factors. Hospital populations are smaller at the weekend, as routine and minor operations are not scheduled then and patients who came in on a planned basis earlier in the week are sent home. This means that very ill patients and patients admitted to A&E and pass away at the weekend represent a high percentage of the hospital population on Saturdays and Sundays than on other days. Anot...

Three million Britons working night shifts and endangering their health

Maintenance workers arrive for their night shift at Victoria Underground station in London The number of people working regular night shifts has increased to more than three million since the recession, at a potential cost to their health and family life, new research has disclosed. One in eight of the workforce is now employed while the rest of Britain sleeps, with a particularly steep rise in female staff on antisocial hours. The TUC analysis follows studies suggesting a link between night-time working and increased likelihood of suffering such conditions as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression. It called for late-night staff to be given extra rights to protect them from exploitation which could harm their mental and physical health. The report wa...

UK drivers do not know the correct speed limit

More than a third of drivers do not know what the speed limit is on roads, a new study has revealed. A survey of 2,000 UK drivers by the Co-operative Insurance found that 36% could not say what the national limit was on a dual carriageway, while one in eight gave the wrong answer for motorways (70mph for both). A handful of those questioned thought the limit on dual carriageways was 80mph instead of 70mph. Younger drivers were more likely to give the correct answer, while motorists in London had the least awareness of speed limits. Steve Kerrigan of the Co-operative Insurance, said: "These figures show that all too often drivers are getting into their cars and driving with no real awareness of the speed limits in place. "It is interesting that younger drivers - who a...

Landlords who rent properties to illegal immigrants will face up to five years in prison under a crackdown to be announced by the Government on 3 August. The move is part a drive to make it harder for migrants to live in the UK when they have no right to be in the country. It is also aimed at landlords who house immigrants in unsafe and overcrowded properties. A blacklist of “rogue landlords” and letting agents who are repeat offenders will be created and they will be banned. Under a law passed last year, landlords are required to check the residency status of tenants before offering them an agreement. If they fail to do so, face a civil penalty of up t...
