The one chart that shows what causes fatal plane crashes

Analysis of more than 1,000 fatal crashes from 1950 to 2010 shows the majority were caused by pilots making mistakes, sometimes in response to severe weather or mechanical issues. In other cases, air traffic controllers or maintenance workers were found to be to blame, and mechanical failure also led to a fifth of fatal accidents. Deliberate sabotage, such as bombs, hijacking and missile strikes, made up only eight per cent of the total, according to Plane Crash Info. Planes carrying 18 passengers or less, military and private aircraft, and helicopters were not counted in the study. Despite a series of recent disasters involving passenger jets, including Malaysia Airlines flights 370 and 17, AirAsia Flight 8501 and Germanwings Flight 9525, flying is still one of the safes...

The function, jointly organised by the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), UK Bangladesh Cata-lysts of Commerce & Industry (UKBCCI), and Bangladesh High Commission in the UK, was also addressed by Bangladesh Commissioner in London Md Abdul Hannan, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Bangladesh Abrar A Anwar, and Chairman of UKBCCI I...

Swathes of Britain are on alert for severe gales to unleash 70mph gusts with more than double the normal rainfall forecast. A deep low pressure system will be bolstered by the remnants of Tropical Storm Henri cur-rently charging across the Atlantic. Just days after the Met Office invited the British public to choose autumn storm names next week may see the first getting an airing. 15 Facts You Might Not Know About the Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Taj Mahal is widely considered one of the most beautiful—and romantic—buildings in the world, but their are probably a few things you don't know about India's most ornate mausoleum. 1. THE TAJ MAHAL WAS BUILT TO HONOR THE FAVORITE WIFE OF AN EMPEROR. Like many of his predecessors, Shah Jahan married several wives over the course of his adult life. Although Shah Jahan spread his heart around, none of these ladies found quite the same favor as his third wife (but first love), Arjumand Banu Begum, more famously known as Mumtaz Mahal. Their union lasted 19 years and led to the birth of 14 children. Complications during the birth of the final child led to Mahal’s untimely passing at the age of 39. Shah Jahan...

More than 11,000 Icelanders offer to house Syrian refugees to help European crisis

More than 11,000 families in Iceland have offered to open their homes to Syrian refugees in a bid to raise the government’s cap of just 50 asylum seekers a year. They responded to a call by author Bryndis Bjorgvinsdottir, who set up a Facebook group with an open letter to the country’s welfare minister, Eygló Harðardóttir, asking her to allow people to help. Ms Bjorgvinsdottir said she knew someone who could house five Syrians fleeing the country’s brutal civil war, requesting work permits, residents papers and “basic human rights” in exchange for paying for their flight and helping them integrate into national society. In the letter, she said she started the group to show the level of public support for welcoming more refugees, who Ms Bjorgvinsdottir called “human resourc...

The fear and insecurity behind Putin’s bizarre new workout video

On Sunday, the Kremlin released a strange, awkward video of Russian President Vladimir Putin working out with Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev. The camera follows the two men silently lifting weights in a sun-dappled pavilion at the Bocharov Ruchei government residence in Sochi, going from exercise to exercise on the kind of self-balancing weight machines that your CrossFit-obsessed friends are always making fun of. The decision to release footage of the most powerful man in Russia frowning through a set of calf raises in unflattering sweatpants might seem, to a casual observer, odd. But this is all part of the long-running and quite carefully scripted Putin Adventure public affairs strategy. It follows years of other photo ops and staged videos that are basically official P...

Saudi firms stop hiring costly domestics from Bangladesh

Recruitment offices here have decided to stop hiring Bangladeshi workers because they claim that a supply crunch has raised costs. Ibrahim Al-Megheimish, a recruitment expert, said that there are too few Bangladeshi workers seeking employment, which now means costs have risen from $1,000 (SR3,751) to $1,800 (SR6,752) just to bring them here, a local publication reported recently, reports Arab news. He said the cost of SR7,000 outlined by the Saudi Ministry of Labor is not enough to cover all the expenses incurred in bringing workers to the country. This has also been the complaint of other recruitment office owners, who said costs have risen 80 percent. Al-Megheimish said he was surprised that the ministry announced the recruitment costs in American dollars. He said the mi...

Night Tube service launch suspended amid threat of further strikes on London Underground

The introduction of an all-night service on the London Underground has been suspended amid the threat of further strike action by workers. London Underground said that plans to launch the weekend Night Tube service on 12 September had been "deferred". It had previously been reported that officials were considering delaying the launch after it was met with staunch opposition by members of staff. Three rail unions staged walkouts in July and August, and planned to strike again in the coming weeks. LU officials had previously said that the service would not be launched "at any cost", but Transport for London had confirmed as recently as this week that it was still committed to the 12 September date. Speaking to PA, LU said it wanted to allow more time for talks with unions to...
