Gunman: I’m Surprised I Didn’t Do This Before

A man who shot dead two former colleagues on live television wrote a rambling 23-page suicide note and manifesto in which said he was "surprised I didn't 'do this' before now". According to ABC News, a man claiming to be Bryce Williams had called repeatedly asking for the station's fax number which was later used hours after the shooting in Smith Mountain Lake, Moneta, to send the document. In it, Vester Lee Flanagan - who used Bryce Williams on screen - described being the victim of racial discrimination and said the fatal shooting of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, "sent me over the top". He also claims the initials of the Charleston victims were on the bullets he used to kill reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, and expresses ad...

French rail worker paid £3,500 to do absolutely nothing for 12 years files complaint

An employee of France’s national rail operator SNCF has revealed being paid €5,000 (£3,550) per month to do absolutely "nothing" for 12 years, it emerged on Friday. However, rather than being delighted with the situation, he has filed a complaint for "compensation", saying the sinecure put the brakes on his promising career. Charles Simon told French media that his employer, which runs France’s trains including the fast TGVs, took him off his day job in 2003 after he blew the whistle on a case of suspected fraud to the tune of €20 million. Since then he has received €5,000 per month net while staying at home with the status "available" for work. “Each month I receive a new salary statement and a bank transfer. Last month, just like every year in June, I also received a bon...

NBR to take tougher action against tobacco companies

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has decided to be tougher against the use of fake band-rolls and stamps against Bidi and cigarette companies as the revenue collector of the national exchequer has got some allegations in this regard. According to sources at the NBR, some bidi and cigarette-producing companies are using fake band-rolls and stamps to evade tax. "The amount of the tax evasion is hefty and it came in the light following an inquiry," a senior NBR official told the news agency. He said the country's some tobacco companies have long been using fake band-rolls and stamps to evade the Value Added Tax (VAT). The Board also asked its field-level offices across the country to intensify their surveillance. The NBR official said they have collected samples from the r...

Nation paying deep homage to Bangabandhu

The grateful nation is paying rich tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 40th anniversary of martyrdom with observing the occasion as National Mourning Day at the state level. To mark the day, the government, ruling Awami League (AL), its front and associate bodies, different socio-cultural, political and professional bodies held elaborate programmes. On this day in 1975, the Father of the Nation along with most of his family members was assas-sinated by a section of disgruntled and ambitious army personnel. His two daughters - Sheikh Hasina, now prime minister, and Sheikh Rehana-escaped the bloodbath as they were abroad. The day was a public holiday. The day's programme started with the hoisting of National Flag at half-mast and raising ...

Islamic State Leader Raped American Hostage

Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi repeatedly raped American hostage Kayla Mueller, according to accounts provided to US intelligence officials. Ms Mueller, whose death was confirmed in February, is said to have been kept for a while by Islamic State financier Abu Sayyaf and his wife, Umm Sayyaf. According to a Yazidi teenager who was held with 26-year-old Ms Mueller, al Baghdadi took the American as his "wife", repeatedly forcing her to have sex when he visited. Mueller family spokeswoman Emily Lenzner told the Associated Press news agency the 14-year-old Yazidi girl, who later escaped, spoke to US officials. They checked out her story with other intelligence before passing it on in June to Kayla Mueller's parents, Carl and Marsha Mueller, Ms Lenzner added. An unna...

Three million Britons working night shifts and endangering their health

Maintenance workers arrive for their night shift at Victoria Underground station in London The number of people working regular night shifts has increased to more than three million since the recession, at a potential cost to their health and family life, new research has disclosed. One in eight of the workforce is now employed while the rest of Britain sleeps, with a particularly steep rise in female staff on antisocial hours. The TUC analysis follows studies suggesting a link between night-time working and increased likelihood of suffering such conditions as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression. It called for late-night staff to be given extra rights to protect them from exploitation which could harm their mental and physical health. The report wa...

UK drivers do not know the correct speed limit

More than a third of drivers do not know what the speed limit is on roads, a new study has revealed. A survey of 2,000 UK drivers by the Co-operative Insurance found that 36% could not say what the national limit was on a dual carriageway, while one in eight gave the wrong answer for motorways (70mph for both). A handful of those questioned thought the limit on dual carriageways was 80mph instead of 70mph. Younger drivers were more likely to give the correct answer, while motorists in London had the least awareness of speed limits. Steve Kerrigan of the Co-operative Insurance, said: "These figures show that all too often drivers are getting into their cars and driving with no real awareness of the speed limits in place. "It is interesting that younger drivers - who a...

Heathrow power cut leaves thousands having to fly without luggage

Thousands of holidaymakers are believed to be without their luggage after a power failure at Heathrow airport disabled the electronic baggage systems. The airport said it was working hard to reunite passengers with their bags as quickly as possible, after the second incident in the space of about a month that left many passing through Terminal 5 unable to fly with their suitcases. One passenger said that while he managed to get his bags on the plane as hand luggage, many others did not. Fintan Gormley, a member of the Baku Celtic supporter’s club (Baku CSC) who was flying home to Azerbaijan to watch his team play a pre-season friendly, said: “It was very bad. Luckily, I managed to get a massive bag on as hand luggage. It was full of the Baku CSC shirts, so we couldn’t ...

Landlords renting properties to illegal immigrants to face up to five years in prison

Immigration Enforcement officers raid a residential property looking for illegal immigrants in Southall, West London. Landlords who rent properties to illegal immigrants will face up to five years in prison under a crackdown to be announced by the Government on 3 August. The move is part a drive to make it harder for migrants to live in the UK when they have no right to be in the country. It is also aimed at landlords who house immigrants in unsafe and overcrowded properties. A blacklist of “rogue landlords” and letting agents who are repeat offenders will be created and they will be banned. Under a law passed last year, landlords are required to check the residency status of tenants before offering them an agreement. If they fail to do so, face a civil penalty of up t...
