Routine inspection leads to immediate closure of restaurant with cockroach infestation

An Indian restaurant owner has been fined more than £40,000 after council officers discovered an infestation of cockroaches and mice. Restaurant Dhaka Biryani in Mile End was closed down immediately following a routine inspection carried out in July 2016. Having established the restaurant was not registered on the Food Safety System, the council's Environmental Health team visited the premises as a routine inspection. In carrying out a full food hygiene inspection, officers found a severe infestation of cockroaches and mice. Environmental Health Officers found cockroaches brazenly appearing in the well-lit kitchen in droves despite typically being nocturnal indicating that the problem had been deep-rooted and longstanding. Closer inspection revealed that a mouse infestation also existed as...

Trump’s anger over Iran deal forced aides to scramble for a compromise

President Trump was livid. Why, he asked his advisers in mid-July, should he go along with what he considered the failed Obama-era policy toward Iran and prop up an international nuclear deal he saw as disastrous? He was incensed by the arguments of Secretary of State Rex ¬Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and others that the landmark 2015 deal, while flawed, offered stability and other benefits. He did not want to certify to Congress that the agreement remained in the vital U.S. national security interest and that Iran was meeting its obligations. He did not think either was true. He threw a fit, said one person familiar with the meeting. He was furious. Really furious. It’s clear he felt jammed. So White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster and other senio...

Britain’s most wanted female terrorist white widow Sally Jones killed in US strike

The fugitive jihadi, who was once a punk rock singer was killed in June in a US strike close to the border between Syria and Iraq. For more than three years Jones has been the world’s most wanted female terrorist. She fled to Syria from Kent in 2013 to marry computer hacker Junaid Hussain, an Isil fighter from Birmingham, and took her then 11-year-old son, Joe “JoJo” Dixon with her. A Whitehall source last night told the Sun: The Americans zapped her trying to get away from Raqqa. Quite frankly, it’s good riddance. CIA officials told their UK counterparts that a US Air Force Predator killed 50-year-old Jones in June, it reports. It is not known if her son was with her. US intelligence chiefs say they cannot be 100 per cent certain that the strike killed Jones as the...

Gang of moped thieves jailed for 18 years who carried out 16 day rampage across London to targeted 100 victims

A gang of moped thieves who carried out more than 100 phone muggings in a 16 day rampage across London laughed and shared jokes as they were jailed for more than 18 years. Claude Parkinson, 18, was the leader of a teenage gang who toured the capital's streets on stolen mopeds snatching phones out of unsuspecting pedestrians' hands. Known to friends as Big CJ, Parkinson was likened to he Artful Dodger as he led one of the raids. The crime spree climaxed on May 4 when Parkinson, two boys aged 15 and 16, and a fourth accomplice who has never been caught, terrorised Oxford Street shoppers and targeting pedestrians outside BBC Television Centre. Evening Standard editor George Osborne was among those who fell victim to Parkinson's crew as they carried out 33 offences in the spac...

Tory splits open after Theresa May slaps down Philip Hammond over no deal

A new Brexit faultline opened up in the Conservative party after Theresa May appeared to slap down Chancellor Philip Hammond over how much the Government will spend preparing for a no deal Brexit. The Prime Minister said she has now set aside £250m to help prepare for Brexit, including a no deal scenario, with aides saying she would spend whatever necessary. But earlier on Wednesday, Mr Hammond signalled he wanted to wait until the last point before authorising spending on no deal preparations and appeared unwilling to discuss further funds. Ms May’s intervention was seized upon by Brexiteers, who accuse Mr Hammond of creating ambiguity over the UK’s stance, with some concerned his words will be seen as a sign the UK is not serious about quitting talks without a deal. But ...

A British man sentenced who handed over to the man’s waist

A British man facing a three-year jail sentence in Dubai for putting his hand on a man in a bar so he did not bump and spill drinks has been sentenced to a month in prison on a separate charge. Jamie Harron, 27, has been convicted of public indecency as he awaits the verdict on the other charge against him, according to reports. A spokesman for the prosecution service in Dubai said: On the drinking charge, he has been sentenced to a month in jail, fined 2,000 dirhams (£412) and will be deported. His next appearance on the public indecency case is on October 22. The electrician, from Scotland, had been told to remain in the city for future court hearings. The UK Foreign Office’s advice for drinking in Dubai states: Non-Muslim residents can get a liquor licence to drink alco...

Donald Trump coming to visit UK but might not see the Queen

Diplomats are discussing plans for a working visit by the US president that will be shorn of the pomp and flummery of a full-blown State Visit. And instead of a red carpet event to showcase the special relationship, it is likely to form part of a tour of several countries by Mr Trump. The downgrading of Mr Trump’s first trip as President to the UK follows the huge controversy when Theresa May tried to steal a march on other world leaders by offering a State Visit as guest of the Queen that was intended to take place this summer, breaching a convention that the honour is usually reserved for a president’s second term. There were threats of boycotts and mass protests when the VIP treatment was announced - with Commons Speaker John Bercow declaring that the President would no...

Toxicity charge to help clean up air quality

A new road charge in London will be introduced next month to help tackle emissions from the oldest polluting vehicles. The Toxicity Charge is being introduced by Transport for London. From Monday 23 October as part of a package of actions intended to help clean up London's dangerously polluted air, a new charge for drivers will be in place. The T-Charge is an additional charge to the existing Congestion Charge scheme and entails a £10 supplement for vehicles that do not meet the Euro 4 standards for both PM and NOx (largely equating to vehicles registered before 2006 or over 10 years old). It only applies in Congestion Charge hours Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and to the same area. This excludes bank holidays and the period between Christmas Day and New Year's Day inclusive. There is a...

Tower Hamlets Council Explores Loneliness as health risk

Ahead of this year's World Mental Health Day on 10 October, Tower Hamlets Council is sharing its findings on how loneliness can affect anyone. Loneliness is increasingly recognised as a serious health concern having a detrimental impact on health and wellbeing, affecting people of all ages. Mayor John Biggs said: The council and its partners are looking to tackle loneliness more widely and these projects provided a valuable insight into what we can do as a community to make life better for residents suffering from loneliness. Reducing loneliness not only improves people's health and wellbeing, transforming their lives, but also reduces the strain on health and care services. A video was commissioned to capture two projects that further explored loneliness. The 'Community Perspectives on Lo...
