The unexpected benefit that retirement has on your sleep quality

You sleep better after you've retired, says new study We'd always assumed that sleep quality diminished as you got older, but it looks like that might not be the case after all... In fact, a new study has revealed that people sleep better and for longer after they reach retirement age. It seems as if giving up work leads to a reduction in sleep difficulties, researchers from the University of Turku in Finland have said. The team concluded this after analysing data from over 5,000 Finnish pensioners, who retired between the years 2000 and 2011. The volunteers answered a questionnaire about their sleep quality both before and after retirement, with surveys taking place every four years. And it seems that sleep quality improves after we give up work, and continues t...

David Davis scrambles to salvage EU relations after damaging trust

David Davis on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show at the weekend when he made the comments about the UK’s agreement with the EU which will allow Brexit talks to progress to the next stage. David Davis has scrambled to salvage relations with Brussels after he was accused of damaging trust in the Brexit talks by making inflammatory comments. EU leaders have warned the British government against backtracking on promises made in Brussels after Davis suggested a Brexit breakthrough reached last week had no legal status. Senior EU figures voiced irritation on Tuesday with Davis’s claim over the weekend that the UK’s concessions in an agreement struck last week to move talks on were merely a statement of intent without legal backing. Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator, warned that...

Never make tea at work

Office teabags can carry as many as 17 times more germs than a toilet seat, scientists have discovered. A study carried out by the Initial Washroom Hygiene came across these staggering results by analysing the bacterial readings of kitchen utensils and appliances. The average bacterial reading of an office teabag was 3,785, in comparison to only 220 for a toilet seat. Other pieces of kitchen equipment also stacked up highly in their findings, with the bacterial readings averaging at 2,483 on kettle handles, 1,746 on the rim of a used mug and 1,592 on a fridge door handle. Many of us wouldn’t think to wash our hands after simply opening the fridge door or before making a brew… but perhaps we should. A poll of 1,000 workers revealed that 80 per cent of people worki...

Trump caught to lying: footage shows some accusers after trump claimed never met women

The Hill Footage shows Trump with some accusers after he claimed he ‘never met’ women Videos and photos showing President Trump with some of the women who have accused him of sexual misconduct are resurfacing after Trump in a tweet Tuesday said his accusers are "women who I don't know and/or have never met." "Despite thousands of hours wasted and many millions of dollars spent, the Democrats have been unable to show any collusion with Russia - so now they are moving on to the false accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don't know and/or have never met. FAKE NEWS!" Trump tweeted Tuesday. People magazine published a photo later in the day showing Trump standing alongside Natasha Stoynoff, a former foreign correspondent for the magazine, while at Trump's Mar-a-Lag...

Sue web media giants like Facebook and YouTube if they don’t delete abusive content

Social media companies like Facebook and YouTube must take responsibility for the material they host and be punished if they do not remove racist, extremist or child sex abuse content, a parliamentary committee will recommend. There will be a push for a change in the law to make sure that social media companies are deemed publishers, rather than platforms, and so would be liable for any illegal content that is available on them. Theresa May's independent ethics watchdog committee will call for legislation to ensure websites that did not comply face punishment, the Times reported. The report by the Committee on Standards in Public Life looked into how politicians were routinely harassed during the last general election campaign. Its conclusions examine the role of ...

£40bn Brexit offer off table without deal

Theresa May has insisted Britain's offer of a Brexit fee around £40bn will be off the table if there is no final deal on a future UK partnership with the EU. Having returned from Brussels last week with a draft agreement on initial divorce matters, the Prime Minister faced a 105 minute grilling by MPs on the terms of the deal struck on the first phase of Brexit negotiations. Mrs May confirmed the UK has consented to a financial settlement worth between £35bn-39bn; agreed measures to protect the rights of EU citizens in the UK; and made a commitment to there being no hard border on the island of Ireland. The Prime Minister hailed a new sense of optimism in Brexit negotiations, with good news for both Leavers and Remainers who want a smooth and orderly departure from the EU....

Coldest night of the year sees schools stay closed: Heathrow Airport said flights continued to be disrupted

The UK has shivered through the coldest night of the year so far, with temperatures plunging as low as -13C. Large swathes of the country saw temperatures fall below freezing, and the Met Office says the village of Shawbury in Shropshire was coldest of all. Severe weather warnings for snow and ice are in place until 11am on Tuesday across much of the UK as forecasters warned the icy conditions could bring further travel disruption. Hundreds of schools are also staying closed for the day - including in Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and parts of Wales - amid concerns of treacherous conditions on untreated paths, and fears that snow will have compacted into ice. The Met Office said: "Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with some journ...

Other fuel types and electricity tariffs are also expected to rise in price over the coming years. Fuel prices, excluding jet fuel, are not expected to rise to international levels until 2023 at the earliest. Under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's plans to reform the economy, fuel subsidies are eventually to be totally eliminated. Saudi Arabia's Finance Ministry did not immediately respond for a request for comment. The price hikes are part of the ...
