Company to use spy drones to stop people working long hours

If you’ve ever worked at a firm with a pointless long-hours, bums-on-seats mentality, you may want to applaud this idea from Japan. A firm has unveiled a drone which hovers around buildings looking for workers doing overtime then hovers over them blasting them with music until they go home. The ‘T-Frend’ plays Auld Lang Syne, which is often used in Japan to announce that shops are closing. Norihiro Kato of creators Taisei says, You can’t really work when you think ‘it’s coming over any time now, and hear Auld Lang Syne along with the buzz. The drone patrols office floors on a pre-set path, looking for workers putting in extra hours then strikes. The firm hopes to sell the drone as a service, starting in April, with prices set at ¥500,000 (£3,295 a month), reports...

Soft Brexit as outlined Labour’s vision for Britain

Sir Keir Starmer has piled pressure on the government to negotiate a soft Brexit as he outlined Labour’s vision for Britain to stay in a customs union and a single market variant. The shadow Brexit secretary led a co-ordinated Labour frontbench effort to soften the party’s stance on Brexit and put more distance between its position and that of the government. He also left open the question of a second referendum. Sir Keir said that Labour was prepared to continue paying into the EU budget after Brexit, and endorsed easy movement of workers to keep the benefits of the single market and customs union. Theresa May has pledged to take the UK out of both. Sketching an outline of Brexit that looked like a Norway-style agreement for the 21st century, Sir Keir made clear that Labo...

London grooming gang exposed as police warn abuse happening across Britain

Police believe they have exposed a new grooming gang in London as officers warn widespread abuse is taking place across the country. Four girls between the age of 13 and 15 have reported being raped by a group based around a McDonald’s in Stratford, triggering a crackdown that has so far identified at least 30 potential victims. Detectives believe the number will grow as they appeal for others to come forward, after arresting three boys and three men in Stratford. Police are already arresting around 420 men every month over child sexual exploitation across England and Wales, and the numbers continue to grow. Detective Inspector Laura Hillier, of the Metropolitan Police’s sexual exploitation team, said an operation codenamed Grandbye was launched after the four vic...

Cllr Sharia Khatun and businessman £2m Abdus Shukur bribe scandal to build Canary Wharf’s longest Skyscraper Tower

Labour has been plunged into a corruption scandal after a businessman with close ties to the party was secretly recorded demanding a £2m bribe from property developers seeking to build one of Britain’s tallest skyscrapers. In the recording obtained by The Sunday Times the businessman claimed he was acting on behalf of Labour politicians who could guarantee planning permission for the proposed £500m development in the Isle of Dogs, east London. He was introduced by Shiria Khatun, a deputy mayor of Labour controlled Tower Hamlets council, as someone who could assist with planning. He later sent a contract to the developers setting out the illicit deal in which he would deliver planning approval from Tower Hamlets at a premium of £2,000,000. Four Labour politicians wo...

Theresa May faces first Brexit bill defeat

Theresa May is facing her first Commons defeat on her Brexit bill within days, amid a last-minute plea to pro-European Tories to force a truly meaningful vote on Britain’s final EU deal. Leading Tory rebels believe they have a real chance of securing the measure, with party whips also said to be worried that they cannot prevent an embarrassing defeat for the prime minister before she heads off to Brussels for a historic EU summit. In a joint statement on Saturday night, senior figures from across the Commons told the Observer that MPs considering whether or not to join this week’s rebellion should put the national interest, not party politics, first. The statement is signed by the leaders of the all-party parliamentary group on EU relations, including former Tory business ...

Global powers lobby to stop special Brexit deal for UK

Theresa May’s headaches are only just beginning. Theresa May’s hopes of securing a unique post-Brexit trade deal with the EU were under threat on Saturday night as Brussels said it was coming under international pressure to deny Britain special treatment. After a week that saw May reach a deal with the EU that will allow Brexit talks to move forward on to future trade relations, EU officials insisted a bespoke deal more favourable to the UK than other non-EU nations was out of the question. One EU source close to the talks said: We have been approached by a number of [non-member] countries expressing concerns and making it clear that it would constitute a major problem for them if suddenly the UK were to get better terms than they get. The official said that once the UK is...
