U27 to offer May a carrot and stick approach to Brexit

The EU27 are planning a carrot and stick approach to Brexit at an upcoming summit, offering Theresa May warm words on the Chequers plans to take to the Conservative conference alongside a sharp warning that they need a plan for Northern Ireland within weeks. The twin statements from the EU leaders at the meeting in Salzburg later this month would seek to give the British prime minister some evidence of progress in negotiations on the future trade deal as she seeks to fight off the threat of rebelling MPs. However, under the plans being discussed among the 27, a shot would be fired across May’s bows on the issue of a backstop for Northern Ireland, an issue on which officials and diplomats are becoming increasingly frustrated. This would come into force if a trade de...

I’m Britain’s most hated women

The 35-year-old Emmerdale actress also finally addressed claims made by her former soap co-stars , which she branded as devastating. The interview was in stark contrast to her chat with Jeremy Vine , which viewers blasted for its softly softly approach. On Monday, Emma was seen sitting down with Roxanne in a pre-recorded chat with the former CBB star. Over the last few days, she faced the wrath of the public after saying Ryan had punched her five or six times and insisted that he had deliberately tried to hurt her. Watching it feels like a completely different scenario to it was at the time, Roxanne replied, but Emma probed her on how two days later she still got it so wrong. Especially when she reenacted what had happened on Ben. The former soap actress insisted...

London tube train door were open at speeds up to 40mph

A London tube train hurtled along at speeds of up to 40mph on Saturday morning with its doors wide open. Christiano Nops filmed as the Jubilee Line train travelled between Finchley Road and West Hampstead stations on Saturday morning. He later uploaded the clip, which shows a number of travellers seated in the carriage, on Instagram. His friend Rory Brown shared the clip on Twitter, adding another message to Transport for London. 'Pretty bloody sketchy! #whatishealthandsafety?' In response to a Twitter user who expressed shock that no one had pulled the emergency handle on the train, Mr Brown clarified that at least 10 doors on one side of the train were open. TfL responded to the clip on Sunday, saying they were aware of the incident and that the faulty train h...

Qatar deal to cost taxpayers billons

A deal to sell Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar will require "unprecedented" support from the British taxpayer, a government document has warned. Treasury officials expressed concern that underwriting the £6 billion deal risked “billions of Exchequer funding” if Qatar defaulted on the agreement. The worries stem from an agreement Britain signed with Qatar in December to sell the Gulf nation 24 of the supersonic jets, along with a package of weapons, pilot training and maintenance. Their assessment was that the transaction amounted to an unprecedented level of support to one buyer and risked “skewing”the portfolio of UK Export Finance (UKEF), the government’s credit agency, by concentrating about 25 per cent of their portfolio risk in one transaction. British defence ...

Brexit: May vows no compromise

Theresa May has said that giving in to calls for a second referendum on the final terms of the UK's withdrawal from the EU would be a gross betrayal of our democracy. The Prime Minister dismissed calls from the People's Vote, a cross-party group that includes several high-profile figures and MPs, for a second Brexit vote. Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Mrs May said: In the summer of 2016, millions came out to have their say. In many cases, for the first time in decades they trusted that their vote would count; that after years of feeling ignored by politics, their voices would be heard. To ask the question all over again would be a gross betrayal of our democracy and a betrayal of trust. Mrs May said the coming months were critical in shaping the future of our c...

Man jailed for plot to kill May

An Isis fanatic who plotted to bomb Downing Street and behead Theresa May has been jailed for life. Naa’imur Zakariyah Rahman was walking down a London road with what he believed was a pressure cooker bomb and a suicide vest when he was arrested in November. Sentencing the 21-year-old to life imprisonment, Mr Justice Haddon-Cave said that although the devices were fakes provided by the security services, he planned to carry out a major terror attack. The judge said Rahman hoped to kill as many police officers, bystanders and tourists as possible by detonating a bomb at the gates of Downing Street before storming the building to murder the prime minister and blow himself up. Rahman is a very dangerous individual and it is difficult to predict when, if ever, he will ...

Woman stabbed on London street

A witness said he heard a young woman screaming during a stabbing on a busy street in a daylight attack. The man, who did not want to be identified, said he saw two men with a blade on Caledonian Road in Islington, north London. Two of them attacked one and basically they got stabbed pretty badly, he added. I thought the woman was just screaming I didn’t realise she was hurt. The victim, in her 20s, is believed to have been stabbed in the chest. Part of the street was in lockdown with cordons in place and traffic diverted following the attack at around 10.20am on Saturday. Piles of clothes could be seen lying on the ground outside a parade of shops and cafes. A man, who has not been identified, has been arrested and is being held by Metropolitan Police officers ...

Sadiq Khan bikini balloon launched

A small crowd gathered in Westminster to watch the 29ft blimp take to the skies on Saturday morning. As the inflatable went up, there were chants of higher, higher, higher. Organisers say the stunt has helped them raise £58,000 for an ongoing campaign to remove Mr Khan from his post because they say they blame him personally for a rise in violence in the capital. Under Sadiq Khan, we have seen crime sky rocket to unprecedented levels, a statement on the crowdfunding web page states. People in London don’t feel safe and they aren’t. It comes just a couple of months after the mayor waved through the flying of a blimp of Donald Trump during the US president's to the UK visit. Speaking on Saturday morning, lead organiser Yanny Bruere a 28-year-old sales manager from N...

Princes touching tribute on anniversary of death

Princess Diana is being remembered in a touching way by William and Harry on the 21st anniversary of their mother's death. While the princes have had a packed summer of public and private events, including a monumental royal wedding for Harry and Meghan Markle, Kensington Palace scheduled no engagements for them today. It's believed the princes, 15 and 12 when they lost their mother, will be spending the day with their wives and wider families. Last year, the princes also stayed out of the public eye on the same day, spending it in private with family. But, on the eve of the 20 year anniversary, Harry, 33, and William, 37, visited the White Garden, a memorial dedicated to Diana in the grounds of Kensington Palace. Despite the huge impact she made on the world, ba...
