Kenyan president rebukes May

Kenya’s president has complained that no British prime minister has visited the east African country for 30 years, delivering a diplomatic rebuke to Theresa May in a press conference on the final day of her visit to the continent. Uhuru Kenyatta told May he was pleased she had found time to visit and went on to struggle to remember Boris Johnson’s surname at the culmination of a three-day trip aimed at boosting Britain’s trade and diplomatic presence in the country. The president began proceedings by saying he was glad May had honoured our invitation to come and see for yourself our country and continent that has changed in the last nearly four decades since a UK prime minister visited. The last British prime minister to visit Kenya was Margaret Thatcher in 1988. S...

Trump Warns of election Violence

President Trump warned evangelical leaders Monday night that Democrats will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently if Republicans lose control of Congress in the midterm elections. Speaking to the group in the State Dining Room of the White House, Mr. Trump painted a stark picture of what losing the majority would mean for the administration’s conservative agenda, according to an audiotape of his remarks provided to The New York Times by someone who attended the event. They will end everything immediately, Mr. Trump said. When you look at antifa, he added, a term that describes militant leftist groups, and you look at some of these groups, these are violent people. The blunt warning delivered to about 100 of the president’s most...

Corbyn in rivers of blood row

Former chief rabbi Jonathan Sacks has called Jeremy Corbyn an antisemite, saying the Labour leader’s comment about Zionists at a 2013 conference was the most offensive statement by a senior UK politician since Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech. In an interview with the New Statesman, Sacks, who was the UK’s chief rabbi from 1991 to 2013, said Corbyn had given support to racists, terrorists and dealers of hate who want to kill Jews and remove Israel from the map. He said: Now, within living memory of the Holocaust, and while Jews are being murdered elsewhere in Europe for being Jews, we have an antisemite as the leader of the Labour party and Her Majesty’s opposition. That is why Jews feel so threatened by Mr Corbyn and those who support him. Sacks condemned Cor...

PM rebukes chancellor’s no deal assessment

Theresa May delivered a rebuke to her chancellor as she arrives in Africa for her first visit to the continent as prime minister. When asked whether she thought her chancellor was right in his assessment of the economic impact of no deal as outlined in a letter to the Treasury Select Committee last week, the PM refused to endorse Philip Hammond's position, stating that the figures he quoted were out of date. First of all, the chancellor was talking about a set of figures that I think came out in January. I think when they came out I was very clear on a previous trip that those figures were a work in progress at that particular time. Her failure to back Hammond and his prognosis for no deal will be cheered on the Brexiteer wing of the party. A senior government so...

Londoners selling up to move north

Record numbers of London homeowners are selling up to buy cheaper property in the north and Midlands, using profits made in the capital to splurge on bigger homes. Research by agents Hamptons International found the proportion of Londoners leaving the capital for northern England or the Midlands had tripled since 2010. The average Londoner quitting the capital pays £424,610 for their new property, enough to buy a large detached house in a good suburb of Birmingham but which only pays for a two-bed flat above a shop in east London. Aneisha Beveridge, research analyst at Hamptons, said: With affordability stretched, more Londoners are moving out of the capital to find their new home. Many London leavers were looking for a bigger home or better local schools, Hampton...
