Did the first lady avoid holding Trump’s hand again

Did Melania Trump avoid holding her husband’s hand again? Let’s go to the tape. On Monday, as President Trump and the first lady walked before a phalanx of cameras on their way to a tax reform rally in Ohio, the president seemed to reach for and then fumble to find his wife’s right hand. After what appeared to be a botched attempt, Trump momentarily stopped and repositioned himself on his wife’s opposite side. There, he gestured briefly at the press before the couple continued across the South Lawn of the White House toward Marine One. As she frequently does, the first lady was wearing her overcoat a bright lemon-yellow one paired with a matching turtleneck hanging loosely on her shoulders, her arms at her sides beneath it. She carried her handbag in her left han...

Children should be made aware of internet risks

Children need to be aware of the Internet risks that can expose them to bad actors and abuse on the web, a top Google executive said at an event here on Tuesday to commemorate Safer Internet Day 2018. We want to bring Internet for everyone. Keeping the web safe for everyone is a shared responsibility, Sunita Mohanty, Director, Trust and Safety at Google India, told reporters. While the Internet has made life easier by helping us share and receive day-to-day information, we also need to be aware of the consequences, negative experiences that make us vulnerable to threats. Women, children and adults are vulnerable to bad actors on Internet, hence there is an urgent need to sensitise them about the possible threats, Mohanty added. India has the second largest Interne...

Agree Brexit deal or both UK and EU suffer

Andrew Bailey, chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority, said City regulators needed time to sort out issues including the validity of derivatives contracts, clearing financial trades and cross-border flows of data. There is a range of operational issues arising from Brexit which, if not tackled, will create financial stability risks and issues for both the UK and the European Union, Bailey said at a dinner in London on Monday evening. The FCA chief executive said the financial risks were symmetric in impact and so were in the interests of both the UK and the EU to tackle. I think this point is increasingly understood on both sides. It is not a matter of scaremongering to get negotiating advantage. Bailey said that when the UK leaves the EU, a wide range...

Dawn raid on 21 people traffickers

Investigators have smashed an organised crime gang smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants a year into the UK. Twenty-one suspects were arrested in a wave of early morning raids across Cleveland in the North East, London and East Sussex. The gang is believed to have charged immigrants up to 10,000 euros to be hidden in trucks and brought across the English Channel. Most of the trafficked immigrants are Iraqi Kurds, mostly men but some families have also been brought into Britain. Among those arrested were two men suspected of being organisers of the gang, which has been operating in France, Belgium and Holland. More than 350 police officers were involved in the raids co-ordinated by the National Crime Agency after a year-long investigation. Investigators were a...

Virgin bags lucrative new rail deal just after their East Coast route collapses

The Tories have awarded a lucrative rail franchise to Virgin Trains just two minutes after revealing another franchise part-run by the firm was set to collapse within months Virgin Trains East Coast is a partnership between Stagecoach and Sir Richard Branson's empire. The government had already decided to end the franchise three years early in 2020 which could cost taxpayers up to £2bn in lost payments to the Treasury. But today Transport Secretary Chris Grayling admitted to the commons that the franchise only had enough cash to operate in its current form for a matter of a very small number of months and no more. And in a move branded outrageous by a rail union leader Virgin Trains was given an extension to run services on the London to Glasgow route. He called ...

Donald Trump in clash with UK Government after attack on broke NHS

US President Donald Trump has triggered another extraordinary spat with Theresa May’s government after claiming the NHS was going broke and not working. Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt hit back by saying he was proud of the British system despite the challenges it faced. The US president said thousands of people are marching in the UK because of concerns about the state of the NHS. Mr Trump made the attack as he targeted Democrats pushing for a British-style universal health system in the US. But Mr Hunt responded to Mr Trump’s Twitter attack with a post of his own, saying no-one protesting about the state of the NHS wanted a US-style system. NHS may have challenges but I’m proud to be from the country that invented universal coverage – where all get...

No 10 rules out EU customs union

Downing Street has moved to reassure Tory Brexiteers that Theresa May is committed to taking Britain out of the EU customs union, amid growing dissent on her backbenches and speculation she could face a leadership challenge over the issue. With anger rising among Tory Eurosceptics over suggestions the Prime Minister was considering softening her Brexit stance, Number 10 sources insisted the UK would categorically [be] leaving the customs union. It came after warnings from senior Brexiteers and reports that anti-EU Tory backbenchers could launch a bid to topple Ms May if she joined pro-EU Cabinet ministers including Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, and Amber Rudd, in advocating an ongoing customs union with the EU. The confusion deepened on Friday, when a Downing Str...
