The 6 tricks I use to get more done in less time while working from home

While more and more companies are opting to allow employees to telecommute a wise decision considering the productivity boost that can result working from home isn't for everyone. I've been doing it for nearly 10 years, and honestly, I can't imagine ever returning to a traditional office environment. Still, it's easy to get distracted when you're effectively your own boss when it comes to time management. Since no one's clocking my productivity, it's up to me to ensure everything gets done promptly and at a high level of quality. Here's how I keep myself focused and disciplined while working from home. Number of EU nationals working in UK falls sharply It was the biggest such fall in two decades and builds on a decline which was already being seen earlier thi...

How to beat stress using NLP and mindfulness

Stress is a day-to-day occurrence. Many of us spend our lifetimes being busy, jumping from one task to the next. How are you today? is no longer answered with an acknowledgement of how we actually are, but more around what we are doing. Oh you know, busy. Not only that, our busyness prevents us from taking the time to stop and smell the flowers so to speak, to enjoy the present moment, enjoy who we are and how we are appreciating life. What is stress? Stress is a debilitating condition that can stop us in оur tracks. Mаnу in the scientific community nоw believe that the vаѕt majority оf diseases and illnesses аrе caused by prolonged stress. Dr Mауо from the Mауо Clinic bеliеvеѕ that mаnу people hаvе died bесаuѕе оf worry. While it dоеѕn’t directly kill them, it...

The 10 best cities for a warm winter break

Escape the icy grip of British winter with a last-minute break to a city where the welcome is warm. Marrakech Depending on your taste in temperature, you might argue that the former imperial city of Marrakech, in Morocco, is at its best in November. The raw heat of July and August (in the mid-90s, or over 34C) will by then have been replaced by a more restrained 72F (22C), making a walk around the medina – or across the central plaza, the Djemaa el-Fna – an altogether more palatable prospect. Kirker Holidays (020 7593 1899; kirkerholidays.com) is offering three-night escapes to the boutique Villa des Orangers from £1,069 per person, including flights and breakfast. The hotel boasts a swimming pool, just in case the days are still too hot. See our guide to ...

Cloudy urine is something you shouldn’t ignore

Here's the thing about pee: It doesn't really beg to be looked at on the TP. Still, it's wise to take a peek in the toilet after relieving yourself every once in a while. Most of the time, pee's going to look exactly how it should: clear and pale yellow. But...what if it looks a little cloudy-opaque, even? First, I know I say this all the time, but don't freak. While, yes, cloudy pee is a sign that something is off, it's likely nothing serious-there are several (totally NBD) reasons why your pee might be looking a little hazy, says Hajar Ayoub, M.D., a urologist with UT Health and UT Physicians. Take stock of the following reasons why your urine might be a little off-and if things don't clear up (literally) in a few pees, it might be time to see your doc. 1. You're not drinking e...

NHS fail to provide terminal breast cancer patients

Thousands of terminal breast cancer patients are being left abandoned after being denied access to a specialist nurse, the charity Breast Cancer Care has warned. According to figures released to coincide with the international awareness day for the disease, almost three quarters (72 per cent) of NHS trusts across the UK do not provide dedicated nurses. The charity said that there had only been a 7 per cent increase in trusts providing crucial nursing support in the two years since they last looked into the issue. That comes despite the government's cancer strategy promising three years ago that all cancer patients would have access to a designated nurse by 2020. Abandoned patients People living with incurable breast cancer tell us that access to a specialist nu...

The difference between panic attacks and anxiety attacks

Panic attack and anxiety attack are often used interchangeably but do they really mean the same thing? Here's how they differ, as well as symptoms and how to treat them. It happened as I was walking home from class during my second year of college. Seemingly out of nowhere, my heart started racing, I felt like I couldn't breathe, and I began sweating, even though it wasn't even hot outside. Terrified of what was happening in my body, I ran home I legitimately thought I was going to die. I had recently started seeing a therapist for depression and anxiety, so I called her as soon as I made it to my room. She knew exactly what was happening: I was having a panic attack. Over the years, I learned I wasn't alone - though some people referred to these episodes of extr...

New survey reveals worrying UK attitudes towards consent

Almost half of people in the UK don't think it's OK for a person to withdraw sexual consent if they're already naked with a partner, according to a survey released for Sexual Health Week 2018. Carried out by the Family Planning Association (FPA) in August, the survey asked 2,003 participants aged between 14 and 55 for their opinions on sexual consent. One of the biggest takeaways from the survey was that almost half of those polled (47 per cent) said that they don’t think it’s OK for someone to withdraw sexual consent if they’re already naked. Among those aged 14 and 17 years old, 39 per cent agreed with this view. The participants were asked whether it was OK to withdraw sexual consent in certain circumstances. The scenarios included if they'd been bought dinner...

Why the northern Turkish coast of Cyprus perfect for family holidays

I’ve just been to Cyprus for the first time in 60 years. To my surprise no one recognised me or said: Welcome back, where have you been? My last trip there was in 1958 and I was 22 so now you know my age and I had just joined the Manchester Evening Chronicle. After two months, I was told I was going to Cyprus. I thought at first it was a suburb of Manchester. The I was told I would be flying there, the first time I had ever flown, which gave me a clue it must be abroad. I was to stay with troops of the Lancashire Fusiliers, who were fighting a war against Greek Cypriot terrorist group EOKA. When I told my girlfriend, she could not understand why I was pleased. I explained it was the first step to becoming a war reporter. Cyprus did get independence from Britain in...

Four in five adults at risk of early death: heart-age test shows

Almost four-fifths (78%) of more than 1.9 million people in England who have taken Public Health England’s… Four out of five adults have hearts that are more damaged than they should be for their age, putting them at greater risk of early death, a major study has shown. The disclosure prompted calls for Britons to ditch their unhealthy lifestyles and monitor their own health more closely in order to reduce their risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Leading doctors said the number of people with a heart older than their actual age was really alarming and should spur people to quit smoking, eat better and exercise more. The revelation reflects in part Britain’s high levels of obesity and physical inactivity and previously high smoking rate. Almost four-fifths (78...

How often should be washing bed sheets

Does anyone have any clue how long they should go before washing their bed sheets? Is there a set rule? Should we do it every day, every week, every fortnight? Honestly, who knows? Okay, well microbiologists know. And they have decided to impart their knowledge with us! Thank you! And the answer may have you running to put a wash on right now. Philip revealed that you should be washing your bed sheets every week! Yup, every seven days! Turns out that all the sweat and moisture we produce while sleeping creates an ideal fungal culture medium that, according to Philip it turns our beds into a ‘botanical park’ for bacteria and fungus. Add to your little bacteria feeding ground all the microbes in the air, like dust, pollen and lint. Okay, we’re off to wash our she...
