This is why the Royals don’t use a last name

The Royal family are a bit of an enigma, for many reasons – one being the fact that you never really hear their last name. Just like Cher, Madonna and Prince, the Royals’ surname is an afterthought. This is because, up until the early 20th century, they had no last name at all. Kings and princes were instead known by the names of the county they ruled, according to the royal family’s official website. It states: The names of dynasties tended to change when the line of succession was taken by a rival faction within the family (for example, Henry IV and the Lancastrians, Edward IV and the Yorkists, Henry VII and the Tudors), or when succession passed to a different family branch through females (for example, Henry II and the Angevins, James I and the Stuarts, George I and th...

Macron, Le Pen face off as France elects president

The French people casts their ballot at a polling station in France, on May 7, 2017, during the second round of the French presidential election. French voters went to the polls on Sunday to pick a new president, choosing between young centrist Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen in a watershed election for the country and Europe. Polling day follows an unprecedented campaign marked by scandal, repeated surprises and a last-minute hacking attack on Macron, a 39-year-old who has never held elected office. The run-off vote pits the pro-Europe, pro-business Macron against anti-immigration and anti-EU Le Pen, two radically different visions that underline a split in Western democracies. Le Pen, 48, has portrayed the ballot as a contest between the ‘globalists’ r...

Saudi order to ease control on women

Saudi women no longer need a man’s consent to carry out certain activities, local media reported on Friday, but activists said the royal order does not go far enough. Saudi Arabia has some of the world’s tightest restrictions on women, and is the only country where they are not allowed to drive. Under the guardianship system a male family member, normally the father, husband or brother, must grant permission for a woman’s study, travel and other activities. But the Arab News said a royal decree issued by King Salman ordered that women are no longer required to obtain a guardian’s consent for official services ‘unless there is a legal basis for this request’ under Islamic law. Government agencies were advised of this directive, the report said. Other Saudi media including t...

May is asking voters to strengthen her hand as she seeks a mandate for her plan to implement the result of last year's Brexit referendum by quitting the European Union's single market. Her Conservative Party made big gains in local elections last Thursday at the expense of the main opposition Labour party and polls published at the weekend, conducte...

Russia blamed as Macron campaign blasts massive hacking attack ahead of French presidential election

The campaign team of French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron said on Friday night it had been the victim of a massive hacking attack after a trove of documents was released online. The apparent hack came on the final day of campaigning in the French presidential election, with Mr Macron, the centrist, facing Marine Le Pen, the far-Right candidate in tomorrow's run-off. Immediate suspicion fell on Russia, which has been accused of meddling in the US election to help get Donald Trump elected in November. Campaign officials stated authentic documents had been mixed on social media with fake ones to sow doubt and misinformation and that it was a clear attempt to undermine Mr Macron. Democracy at risk The En Marche! Movement has been the victim of a massive and co-ordinat...

British motorists on the continent face £640 speeding fines from today

Motorists drive by a radar part of an average speed measuring system near Englos, northern France. Hundreds of thousands of British motorists will face fines for speeding in Europe under new rules coming in on Saturday. For the first time UK drivers who get caught by speed cameras going too fast on roads in countries including France, the Netherlands and Belgium will face fines of up to £640. However a quirk of the European law will crate a "one way" system in which Europeans caught speeding in the UK cannot be pursued by British police. It comes just as millions of British families are preparing to set off on summer holidays around Europe. In just one year an estimated half a million UK motorists will face prosecution for driving offences in France alone. Under the new ru...

France bans extremely thin models

A law in France banning the use of unhealthily thin fashion models has come into effect, reports BBC. Models will need to provide a doctor’s certificate attesting to their overall physical health, with special regard to their body mass index (BMI)— a measure of weight in relation to height. The health ministry says the aim is to fight eating disorders and inaccessible ideals of beauty. Digitally altered photos will also have to be labelled from 1 October. Images where a model’s appearance has been manipulated will need to be marked photographie retouchée (English: retouched photograph). A previous version of the bill had suggested a minimum BMI for models, prompting protests from modelling agencies in France. But the final version, backed by MPs 2015, allows doctors to dec...

Danish brewer puts the P in pilsner

A Danish brewery is drawing on 50,000 liters of urine collected from the largest music festival in Northern Europe in producing a novelty beer aimed at the more adventurous drinker. The beer named Pisner a word-play combining pilsner with local slang for urine contains no human waste, but is produced from fields of malting barley fertilized with human urine rather than traditional animal manure or factory-made plant nutrients. When the news that we had started brewing the Pisner came out, a lot of people thought we were filtering the urine to put it directly in the beer and we had a good laugh about that, said Henrik Vang, Chief Executive of brewer Norrebro Bryghus. Using human waste as fertilizer on such a scale is a novelty, said Denmark’s Agriculture and Food Council, w...

Trump to wade into Middle East politics on first foreign trip

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he will travel to Saudi Arabia and Israel this month as part of his first foreign trip, wading directly into the tangled diplomacy of Middle Eastern politics. Trump said he would also visit the Vatican along with his swing through the Middle East, which was added to a trip that includes a NATO meeting in Brussels on May 25 and the Group of Seven summit in Sicily on May 26. In a speech in the Rose Garden at an event on religious liberty, Trump cast his trip as an effort to build cooperation and support between Muslims, Christians and Jews for fighting terrorism. Our task is not to dictate to others how to live but to build a coalition of friends and partners who share the goal of fighting terrorism and bringing safety, opportunity ...
