Passengers warned tube strike in most Zone 1 stations will shut on Sunday 6pm

Tube passengers have been warned to prepare for a severely reduced service as talks aimed at averting a 24-hour London Underground strike were adjourned again. There appears to be little sign of preventing the walk-out which will see most Zone 1 stations shut from 6pm on Sunday for 24 hours. Commuters face chaos throughout Monday as key overground interchange stations will have no Underground connections, including Victoria, King’s Cross, Waterloo, Paddington, Euston, Bank and London Bridge. Piccadilly line services will still run between Hammersmith and Heathrow Terminals 1, 2 and 3, but not to Terminals 4 or 5, while there will be limi...

Japan recalls envoy from South Korea over comfort women statue

A comfort woman statue was set up in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul in 2011. Japan said on Friday it was temporarily recalling its ambassador to South Korea over a statue commemorating Korean women forced to work in Japanese military brothels during World War Two which it said violated an agreement to resolve the issue. The two nations agreed in 2015 that the issue of comfort women, which has long plagued ties between the two Asian neighbors, would be ‘finally and irreversibly resolved’ if all conditions of the accord which included a Japanese apology and a fund to help the victims were met. The statue, which depicts a young, barefoot woman sitting in a chair, was erected near the Japanese consulate in the southern South Korean city of Busan at the end of last year...

The anatomy of a Brexit transition deal

According to his colleagues, Britain’s departing EU ambassador had “his hair on fire” since the summer about one particular issue: the importance of a transitional deal for Brexit — and the risks of leaving the EU without one. Sir Ivan Rogers warning to Downing Street, leaked in December, that the EU expects a full UK trade deal to take until the early to mid-2020s seemed stark. By Brussels standards, however, it was one of the more uncontroversial aspects of his advice. More significant was his assessment that British political imperatives to control borders and leave the jurisdiction of European courts required the UK to go for a hard Brexit deal, leaving the UK outside the customs union and the single market. Given this reality, the most valuable outcome of Article 50 t...

Severe weather warning across parts of UK as temperatures drop

A severe weather warning is in place across parts of the country, telling people to be aware of icy conditions. It comes as icy patches were likely to form on Wednesday night, particularly in areas that saw showers. Clear spells on Wednesday night meant a chance of temperatures dropping below freezing, allowing the ice to form. The Met Office warning, in place until 10am on Thursday, highlights the dangers of untreated surfaces such as pavements, cycle paths and some minor roads. It is in place for Yorkshire and Humber, the East Midlands and the east of England. Charles Powell from the Met Office said: Temperatures will be getting lowish, with some dropping below freezing. The icy conditions are likely to be seen in the east where some showers are expected. But the cloud m...
