Overnight and into the morning Sterling had held at around 1.1091 but shot up to 1.1218 after the announcement was made. The High Court ruled Theresa May does not have the authority to use royal prerogative to trigger Article 50 and take the United Kingdom out of the European Union. Instead MPs will be granted a vote in the Commons. The government has been given the go-ahead to appeal against the ruling at the Supreme Court. The surge in the pound is the exact opposite market reaction to last week when the High Court in Belfast ruled in favour of the Government in a similar case. The landmark legal challenges...

May declared that the footballing body should change its mind ahead of the Remembrance Day match between the teams at Wembley this month. Lashing out during Prime Minister’s Question Time in the House of Commons, she added that FIFA – which has been dogged by corruption scandals – should “sort their own house out” rather than interfering with a British tradition. Many Labour and Tory MPs believe the England-Scotland game on November 11 has special significance as it falls in the centenary year of some of the First World War’s most deadly battles. FIFA bans political or religious messages on shirts, but it was forced to allow England players to wea...
