Five killed in Malta runway plane crash

Three French defence officials and two other people died when a surveillance plane crashed shortly after take-off at Malta International Airport. The light aircraft was setting off on a mission over the Mediterranean around 07:20 (05:20 GMT) when it nose-dived and disintegrated in a ball of flames. There was no explosion prior to the crash, according to eyewitnesses. Malta said the flight had been part of a French operation to track illicit trafficking of people and drugs. An investigation into the causes of the crash is to be conducted by the French defence ministry. The airport has re-opened with some disruption expected to the day's scheduled flights. 'Straight down' French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian confirmed that three of the victims were ministry staff while...

Belgium just killed the chances of a successful Brexit by rejecting EU deal

A single regional government in Belgium may have just killed off all hope of a successful Brexit, which includes a post-Brexit free-trade deal with the European Union. This is because on Friday Wallonia, the small Belgium region, rejected the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA, which has taken the 28-nation bloc seven years to negotiate with Canada. Then on Monday, it again rejected the EU's "ultimatum" on changing its mind, according to news agency AFP. The deal was all but done and just needed to be ratified by all EU member states before being implemented. But one of Belgium's six legislatures, Wallonia, refused to support CETA on Friday having vetoed it earlier this week, meaning Belgium's national government cannot give the trade deal its ap...

One cabinet member told the author that Mr Cameron was "the happiest I have seen him in a long time" on the day Mr Gove launched his rival bid for the top job. Mr Cameron, who backed staying in th...

Refugee children from Calais arrived in UK

The first group of unaccompanied children without links to Britain arrived in the UK last night from the Calais camp known as the "jungle". The refugees were among the latest wave of around 70 new young arrivals to cross the Channel under the provisions of the Dubs amendment. It followed a change to the Immigration Act which meant Britain has to accept some of the "most vulnerable" unaccompanied child refugees who do not necessarily have ties to the UK. Previously all the young refugees who have arrived in Britain have been brought under the Dublin regulations, which require the children to have family resident in the UK. Speaking about the new arrivals, Bishop Jonathan Clark, spokesman for Citizens UK, said: "It's great to see government acting on what Citizens UK have be...

11th unwanted sexual advances woman adult film star accuse to Donald Trump

Donald Trump faced fresh allegations of making unwelcome sexual advances, with his 11th accuser being Jessica Drake, an adult film star and director. She also claimed that she was offered $10,000 for Mr Trump to come to her room, which she declined. She was unable to recall whether it was Mr Trump or a staff member calling on his behalf who proposed the alleged payment to her. Mr Trump’s campaign dismissed her allegations as “totally false and ridiculous”, adding “Mr Trump does not know this person, does not remember this person and would have no interest in ever knowing her.” Accompanied by her lawyer Gloria Allred, Ms Drake said the alleged encounter took place at a golf tournament at Lake Tahoe in 2006. Mr Trump, the Republican nominee for the White House, has strongly ...

Russia and the West have entered a new Cold War

Russia and the West have entered a new Cold War that could lead to growing confrontations across the globe, as Vladimir Putin challenges American international hegemony. That is the consensus among military and foreign policy experts in Moscow, who have warned that Russia and the West are headed for a standoff as dangerous as the Cuban missile crisis. “If we talk about the last Cold War, we are currently somewhere between the erection of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile crisis,” said Lt Gen Evgeny Buzhinsky, a former head of the Russian ministry of defence’s international treaties department and now head of the PIR centre, a Moscow think tank. “In other words, teetering on the brink of war, but without the mechanisms to manage the confrontation.” The Russian foreign m...
