Isis fighter reveals group’s plan to spread even after defeat in Iraq and Syria

Isis will flourish and survive even if it is defeated in the present battle for Syria and Iraq an Isis militant has told The Independent. In an exclusive interview, Faraj, a 30-year-old veteran fighter from north east Syria, says that when we say that the Islamic State Isis is everlasting and expanding, it is not a mere poetic or propaganda phrase. He says the group intends to rebuild its strength in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, adding that Isis has sleeper agents all over the world and their numbers are increasing. In his account of his life in Isis, Faraj makes plain that only a year after the caliphate was declared in the wake of the capture of Mosul in 2014, its leaders could foresee that it might be overrun militarily. He reveals hitherto unknown details of...

Iran Begins Construction Second Nuclear Power Plant

Iran began building its second nuclear power plant with Russian help on Saturday, the first such project since last year's landmark nuclear deal with world powers, state TV reported. The project will eventually include two power plants expected to go online in 10 years. Construction on the second plant is set to begin in 2018. The project will cost more than $8.5 billion and produce 1,057 megawatts of electricity. Construction of the power plant is a symbol of Iran enjoying the results of the nuclear deal, Senior Vice-President Ishaq Jahangiri said at a ceremony marking the start of the project. We will continue working with Russia as a strategic partner and friend, he added. The ceremony was held in the southern port city of Bushehr, where Iran's sole operational nuclear ...

The persistent post lunch lethargy

Sitting at your desk at work and struggling to concentrate after lunch? You are not alone; it happens to the best of us. Welcome to ‘food coma’, that common sleepy, lethargic feeling after a meal that is also referred to as ‘carb coma’ or ‘postprandial somnolence’. As the name suggests ‘postprandial’ refers to the meal and ‘somnolence’ to the strong desire for sleep. It may be accompanied by extreme fullness, bloating, mental fogginess, difficulty in concentration and reduced attention span. While this sleepiness may not be confined to the middle of the day, studies report that it occurs predominantly after lunch. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology, published in 1998, reported that the extent of postprandial somnolence was at its extent after meals eaten between ...

European Investment Bank tough about after Brexit

Britain’s exit from the European Union will create difficulties for the European Investment Bank (EIB), a lender owned by EU governments, the bank’s president Werner Hoyer said on Saturday. The EIB is also a central tool for an investment programme the European Commission estimated would generate 315 billion euros ($354 billion) of investment in the EU and which is set to be expanded. When asked what will happen to the EIB when Britain, which is one of its major shareholders, leaves the EU, Hoyer told reporters in Bratislava: The United Kingdom is a big and important shareholder of the European Investment Bank and an important member state of the European Union. This is why it will be a difficult process, Hoyer said on entering a meeting of EU finance ministers. We will ha...

USA and Russia deal for Syria on cease fire

The United States and Russia agreed here Friday to the renewal of a cease-fire in Syria, to begin Monday with the cessation of all air and ground attacks by all parties, including the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. If the truce holds for seven consecutive days and humanitarian aid begins to flow unimpeded to besieged areas, Secretary of State John F. Kerry said the United States and Russia will then establish a Joint Implementation Center to coordinate their intelligence and air attacks against agreed terrorist targets in Syria. A bedrock of the agreement, Kerry said, is Russia’s ensuring that Assad’s air force will no longer fly combat missions over opposition and civilian areas. This step is absolutely essential, Kerry said. By all accounts, Assad air at...

The White House to Vote on Sept

The House is slated to vote on a bipartisan bill that would allow families of Sept. 11 victims to sue the government of Saudi Arabia, setting the stage for a showdown with President Barack Obama on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the attacks. The Senate passed the bill in May by voice vote despite the strident objections from Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals. The White House has signaled Obama would veto the legislation over concerns about exposing Americans overseas to legal risks. If the door is opened for U.S. citizens to take the Saudis to court, then a foreign country could in turn sue the United States, the Obama administration has cautioned. Votes from two-thirds of the members in the House...

Oil prices down in Asia

Both main contracts soared more than two dollars Thursday after the energy department said US inventories dropped 14.5 million barrels, the sharpest rate in 17 years. Oil prices retreated on Friday, taking a chunk out of the previous day’s rally as investors digested data suggesting last week’s plunge in US stockpiles was likely a one-off. Both main contracts soared more than two dollars Thursday after the energy department said US inventories dropped 14.5 million barrels, the sharpest rate in 17 years. But analysts said the decline was attributed to the suspension of imports and shutdown of some production due to Hurricane Hermine, which passed through the Gulf of Mexico in late August, and warned of a rebound next week. “The reason behind the enormous drawdown is transit...

World’s smallest baby born weighing only 8 ounces

A little girl born with feet the size of a fingernail is being hailed as the world's smallest surviving premature baby. Emilia Grabarczyk was only 8.6 inches (22cm) long and weighed 8 ounces (229 grams) when she was born at a hospital in the western German city of Witten nine months ago. Her tiny foot was only 1.2 inches (3cm) long. In comparison, a large banana weighs about 7 ounces while an orange is 6 ounces. Doctors have described her as the "little fighter" and her survival as a "medical sensation" while German media said she was the lightest premature baby ever born in the world. The early birth was followed by a period of uncertainty. Emilia was born so early that it led to subsequent complications. There was an increased risk of hyperactivity and learning difficult...

Media’s front page cover: Mark Zuckerberg accused of abusing power

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg Norway’s largest newspaper has published a front-page open letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, lambasting the company’s decision to censor a historic photograph of the Vietnam war and calling on Zuckerberg to recognize and live up to his role as the world’s most powerful editor. Espen Egil Hansen, the editor-in-chief and CEO of Aftenposten, accused Zuckerberg of thoughtlessly “abusing your power” over the social media site that has become a lynchpin of the distribution of news and information around the world, writing, I am upset, disappointed – well, in fact even afraid – of what you are about to do to a mainstay of our democratic society. “I am worried that the world’s most important medium is limiting freedom instead of trying to ext...

China responds strongly after North Korea’s nuclear test

North Korea nuclear test: China also said that it would lodge a diplomatic protest with North Korea's embassy. China said it resolutely opposed North Korea’s nuclear test on Friday but is unlikely to follow up with strong action because its influence is limited and it believes the United States and South Korea share responsibility for growing tensions in the region. China also said that it would lodge a diplomatic protest with North Korea’s embassy following the nuclear test. China, Pyongyang’s main diplomatic ally, is key in any effort to rein in North Korea’s nuclear programme. But it has been infuriated by the isolated nation’s nuclear and missile tests and has signed up to increasingly tough United Nations sanctions. Read | North Korea leader Kim showed ‘maniacal reckl...
