Which supermarket cheaper than rival stores

A Mirror survey of everyday products including milk, pasta, chicken, rice and cheese found the Aldi bill came to £13.01 - over a fiver less than Sainsbury’s where it cost £18.40. The same items were £16.05 at Asda, £17.88 at Morrisons and £17.62 at Tesco. Our survey follows a Trussell Trust report that revealed one in five parents will skip a meal this summer to make sure the kids don’t go hungry. We found a pack of two chicken breast fillets (300g) cost £1.79 at Aldi but was £3 at Morrisons and £2.95 at Sainsbury’s. Wholewheat pasta (500g) cost 49p at Aldi but was more double the price at Asda where it cost £1. And a 400g punnet of strawberries came to £1.29 at the budget chain but was £2 at Tesco. Out of 15 weekly essentials, Aldi was the cheapest for 12, more expensive ...

DC Transit Officer Charged With Supporting IS

A Washington transit police officer has been charged with attempting to provide material support to Islamic State, authorities say. Nicholas Young, 36, of Fairfax, Virginia, was arrested on Wednesday at police headquarters, the Washington Post said. According to an affidavit, Young bought nearly $250 (£188) of gift cards he intended for IS to use to buy mobile phone apps that would facilitate communication. But Young instead gave the gift cards to an undercover FBI source, it said. Young - a veteran with the transport police department since 2003 - attempted to send the money over a messaging service the terrorist group uses for recruitment, Fox News reported. The FBI has said he is the first law enforcement officer in the US to be charged with a terror-related offence. Yo...

Australian Brain family told to leave the UK after public appeal against deportation fails

The Home Office has told an Australian family living in the Scottish Highlands to go home after their deadline for a successful visa application expired. The Brain family has been sent a letter from the Government telling them to "voluntarily" return to Australia after the visa they came to the UK on was scrapped under new rules three months after their arrival. Kathryn Brain and her husband, Gregg, only found out a year after they moved to Scotland that the post-study student visa Ms Brain was awarded in 2010 had been retroactively discontinued - leading them to accuse the Government of failing to uphold "their end of the bargain. And now the final of three extended deadlines for the parents to find a permanent job, which would allow them and their 11-year-old son Lachlan...

Donald Trump kicks baby out of his rally in Virginia for crying

Trump holds baby at a New Hampshire rally in February Andrew Burton/Getty Trump rallies have proven to be hostile territory for activists voicing their dissent against the candidate or even journalists offering critical coverage. Now it appears Donald Trump has shifted that zero tolerance policy to crying babies. During a campaign stop in Ashburn, Virginia, Mr Trump paused in the middle of his speech to the sounds of a baby crying. His security team had just escorted a group of silent protesters from the event, and perhaps the audience felt the baby had a similar fate. Don’t worry about that baby. I love babies, Mr Trump told the audience. I hear that baby crying, I like it. What a baby, what a beautiful baby. Don’t worry, don’t worry. As Mr Trump continued his tirade...

UK supermarkets increased petrol and diesel price

Supermarkets have slashed the price of petrol and diesel by up to 2p per litre - seeing forecourt prices fall across the country. Asda has announced a national cap meaning motorists will not shell out more than 105.7ppl on unleaded and 106.7ppl on diesel across their 272 stations. Tesco rolled out a 2p drop that will come into effect from 5pm on Monday. Peter Cattell, fuel director for Tesco, said: "We know that lots of customers will have plans for the summer holidays, so we're dropping the price of our fuel to help them enjoy it even more. "This reduction of up to 2p per litre on petrol and diesel at all our 500 petrol filling stations will mean millions of customers save money by shopping at Tesco." Andy Peake, Asda's senior director for petrol, said the chain has dropp...

NHS can legally fund game changing HIV drug as Court decides

A High Court judge has ruled the NHS can legally supply a game changing drug that prevents HIV. National Aids Trust (NAT) brought a challenge against NHS England that was being heard by Mr Justice Green in London. The case relates to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a highly effective anti-retroviral drug used to stop HIV from becoming established in the event of transmission. When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of infection in people who are at high risk by more than 90 per cent. A dispute arose earlier this year when NHS England said it would not routinely fund the drug because it was a preventative service and was therefore not its responsibility. It said local councils were in charge of funding preventative health services. After initially r...

Trump Calls Rival Hillary Clinton The Devil

Donald Trump has unleashed his latest verbal attack on his Democratic rival for the White House by branding Hillary Clinton "the devil". The Republican presidential candidate's insult came as he berated Senator Bernie Sanders' decision to endorse Mrs Clinton. While rallying his supporters in Pennsylvania, Mr Trump said of Sanders: "He made a deal with the devil. She's the devil." He also told a crowd in Ohio that he feared the US presidential election in November "is going to be rigged". The billionaire said he had been hearing "more and more" that the election may not be contested fairly, though he did not elaborate further. He made the claim after first suggesting Mr Sanders never had a chance of winning the Democratic presidential nomination because the party's primary ...

Somali-born Mire, of Samson Road, London, grabbed Mr Zimmerman, 56, after declaring he was going to ‘spill blood’ for his ‘Syrian brothers’. He had images of Fusilier Lee Rigby and Jihadi John on his mobile phone, along with material linked to Isis.
