Hijab for British Muslim women in the police service has been launched by British police

Police Scotland have said they will do “anything” to be more “diverse” and will be introducing a special hijab to encourage more female Muslims to join the force. The Scottish Police authority released a detailed report on how they are working “to achieve a workforce that is more representative of our society,” and encourage “people from under-represented groups to consider policing as a career.” The report is critical of the fact that 2.6 per cent of Scottish officers are non-white British, as the percentage of Scots from non-white backgrounds has recently doubled to 4 per cent, up from 2 per cent in 2001. Therefore, “…in an effort to attract more Muslim women into policing a sample hijab has been sourced and tested” the report states. Police Scotland are far from leading...

Office Tells Female Customers To Shave Their Legs

Shoe brand Office has come under fire for a sexist online newsletter. The subject line of the email was "Show a little leg", while the tagline below read: "Just don't forget to shave them." A British woman called Katy, who goes by the online username AliceInWonderland3, took to Mumsnet to vent her frustrations. "Am I being unreasonable to not want a business who wants female customers telling them they need to shave their legs?" she wrote. "I shave my legs because I know people I encounter day-to-day will be horrified by body hair on a woman, but I don't need a business trying to make me feel bad if I choose to go outside without doing so. "Or trying to make me feel disgusted by something natural." Speaking to the Mail Online, the 24-year-old revealed that she thinks the e...

Scientists turn chief global warming gas into harmless stone

Scientists have a found a quick way — but not a cheap one — to turn heat-trapping carbon dioxide gas into harmless rock. Experts say the results of a two-year, $10 million experiment called CarbFix , conducted about one-third of a mile (540 meters) deep in the rocks of Iceland, offer new hope for an effective weapon to help fight man-made global warming. When an international team of scientists pumped a carbon dioxide and water mix into underground basalt rocks, basic chemistry took over. The acidic mixture dissolved the rocks' calcium magnesium and formed limestone, a permanent natural jail for the heat-trapping gas, according to Juerg Matter of the University of Southampton in England. He is the lead author of a study detailing the experiment published Thursday in the jo...

EU referendum: Sturgeon accuses Johnson of telling £350m whopper

Nicola Sturgeon has led a concerted onslaught from senior remain campaigners aimed at discrediting Boris Johnson, in a heated television debate that saw him attacked for telling “whoppers”. With just a fortnight to go before the historic referendum that will decide whether Britain remains a member of the European Union, Johnson was accused on Thursday night of misleading the public and putting his own career before the good of the country – including by his Conservative colleague energy secretary Amber Rudd. The Scottish first minister described it as a scandal that Johnson’s Vote Leave campaign bus still has the controversial claim that Britain sends £350m a week to Brussels emblazoned on the side of it. Labour’s Angela Eagle, also making the case for remain, joined Sturg...

Woman pretended to be a victim of Paris attacks in €20,000 compensation bid

A woman pretended to be a victim of the Paris terror attacks in order to claim thousands in compensation. The unnamed 25-year-old, from Yvelines in the Île de France region of the French capital, faces five years in prison for fraud and a fine of €375,000 (£294k) after telling investigators she had been injured in a suicide bombing at the Carillon bar. She used fake photographs of burn victims as her evidence and told police she had had a miscarriage during the attack, in an attempt to get €20,000 (£15.7k) in compensation despite not being pregnant at the time, according to Le Parisien. Suspicions were raised immediately by the fact that terrorists had used machine guns at the Le Carillon bar but there had been no bombing there on November 13. The woman came forward to pol...

Chinese police require DNA for passports in Xinjiang

Police in China's north-western region of Xinjiang are asking some residents to provide DNA samples and other biological data when applying for travel documents. People in the multi-ethnic area of Yili will have to provide the samples before being allowed to go abroad. The Chinese government is trying to crack down on periodic violence, which it blames on Islamist militants. Many Muslims in Xinjiang say they are discriminated against. They say the Chinese authorities often refuse to issue documents allowing them to travel. Most of the Uighur ethnic minority, which makes up about 45% of Xinjiang's population, practise the Muslim faith. Over the years China's authorities have attributed violent attacks to Uighur militants, who they say are inspired or aided by overseas terro...

Why Putin Is Meddling in Britain’s Vote

Russian President Vladimir Putin walks past an honor guard London. The only big-name pols on Earth who think Britain should leave the European Union are Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen and Vladimir Putin. Or so the campaign for Britain to remain in the EU keeps telling us. Trump is open about his support for the British exit, or Brexit, and will be in Britain on the day of the referendum results. French hardliner Le Pen is keen to campaign in Britain—even though the leave camp has publicly demanded she stay away. The Kremlin, on the other hand, totally denies that Putin wants Britain to quit the 28-member economic and political union. Officials insist that the Russian president remains entirely neutral. He has offered no public statement on the June 23 referendum and his colle...
