Two lions put to death after mauling naked man who entered pen

Two lions were killed after they severely mauled a man who stripped naked and entered their enclosure in an apparent suicide attempt early on Saturday, authorities said. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was said to be in grave condition. Director Alejandra Montalba of Santiago's Metropolitan Zoo told local media the park was crowded with visitors at the time of the incident. The 20-year-old man broke into the enclosure, took off his clothes and jumped into the middle, horrifying other visitors who witnessed the attack. Zookeepers killed the two lions in order to save his life. "The zoo has an established protocol because people's lives are very important to us," said Montalba, adding that there were no fast-acting tranquilizers available to stop the...

Black cabs blame Uber for rise in attacks on London’s taxi drivers

The arrival of Uber has prompted London’s traditional black-cab drivers to take card payments and introduce CCTV cameras to discourage attacks. A surge has been recorded in violent crimes against London taxi drivers, prompting a fresh spat between Uber and black cabs over who is to blame. New figures from Scotland Yard reveal that violent offences against taxi drivers have risen by more than two-thirds, from 856 in 2014 to 1,403 last year. Black-cab drivers have blamed Uber for the increase, alleging that “poor English” and the inadequate street knowledge of drivers working for the taxi-hailing app company have generated so much frustration among passengers that it has led to violence. Uber has dismissed the criticism, explaining that many private-hire drivers had switche...

House prices face 18% hit if Britain quits EU, says George Osborne

House prices could take an 18% hit over the next two years and there will be an “economic shock” that will increase the cost of mortgages if the UK votes to leave the EU, George Osborne has warned. The chancellor said he would publish an official analysis next week saying house prices would be lower by at least 10% and up to 18% compared with what is expected if Britain remains in the EU. He made his claim as it emerged that property investors were inserting “Brexit clauses” in commercial deals to allow them to pull out. Speaking at the G7 summit in Japan, Osborne said: “If we leave the European Union, there will be an immediate economic shock that will hit financial markets. People will not know what the future looks like. “In the long term, the country and the people in ...

Cyclone Roanu hits power distribution hard in Bangladesh

The power distribution system was seriously disrupted today, in the cyclone-hit areas of Chittagong, Comilla and other coastal districts. According to official sources, the power supply was suspended immediately after the cyclonic Roanu hit the Barisal-Chittagong coast near Chittagong at noon. It took 4-5 hours to cross the coast, leaving at least 11 people dead in different districts. "Many of our feeder lines connected with power the distribution system went off with the storm making landfall in the areas, and we had to shut down some of them as part of our pre-cautionary measures to avoid major disaster," PDB director Saiful Hasan told UNB. He said the PDB and other power entities were instructed to take precautionary measures before Roanu made the landfall. "Despite th...

President Barack Obama was golfing in Maryland at the time. The man was transported to hospital with critical injuries, officials said. Vice-President Joe Biden was in the White House at the time. He was taken to a "secure area" during the incident, White House officials said. The White House has seen a number of security incidents in recent years, prompting changes at the executive complex. First Images Of Egypt Air Jet Crash Debris

Pictures have been posted online showing debris from the EgyptAir jet that came down in the Mediterranean on Thursday. The images show items from the stricken plane, including a child's life jacket and what appears to be part of a seat. The images were posted online on Facebook by an Egyptian army spokesman. Analysis of the debris is likely to be key to determining what happened to the flight. The images were posted after it emerged the plane sent several warning signals about smoke detected in the jet before it crashed. One aviation source said that a fire on board would likely have generated multiple warning signals, while a sudden explosion may not have generated any. Egypt said its navy had found human remains, wreckage and the personal belongings floating in the sea a...

26 years on the run to avoid 2 years jail

What would you do if you were sentenced to two years' imprisonment? Fight back or serve the sentence and start life anew? For one such man in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi, neither seemed like the answers. Md Shamsul Huq, 70, managed to evade the law enforcers for 26 years before he was arrested from Shah Sikander Ali shrine in Jhinaigati upazila of Sherpur on Wednesday. In May 1990, Shamsul was arrested from Godagari for his alleged involvement in smuggling. A case was filed against him. Later, he received bail and vanished quickly from the scene. Thanks to disguises and luck, he stayed beyond the reach of law for long years. Dressed up as a devotee, he roamed around the country for ”pilgrimage” at different shrines. About four months ago, he arrived at Sekandar Ali shrine...

Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan’s history as the first woman President sworn

Experts are predicting a bumpy start to Tsai Ing-wen's presidency as Taiwan's new head of state -- the first female head of an ethnic Chinese territory -- squares up to the mainland. Fifty-nine year old Tsai, who won a landslide victory in January on a platform of boosting Taiwan’s separate identity from China, takes office Friday. Tsai has said she will not seek to provoke Beijing -- but China is deeply suspicious of her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which until the 1990s publicly called for formal independence from the mainland. Beijing has said it would use force if Taiwan formally declared itself an independent state. Beijing has claimed the island as part of its territory since 1949, when the Chinese Nationalist Party or Kuomintang (KMT) fled there after losing ...
